Experience in Tidal Power Industry
• Deployment/ retrieval of
1st tidal turbine in Bay of
Fundy
• Key success factors
• Planning
• Experience
• Communications
10
Experience in Tidal Power Industry
• Challenges:
• Slack tide window
• Turbulence during slack tide
• Positioning
• Reconnection
11
Developing New Methods
• Test run – barge handling off Parrsboro and in Saint John
Objectives
• 1) Demonstrate ability to maneuver large barges. Route
tracking or holding station
• Cable laying
• Turbine deployment/ retrieval
• 2) Help lower cost of Tidal project development by
utilizing locally available assets
12
Test Run – Parrsboro
13
2nd Test Run – Saint John
14
Challenges in Developing New Methods
• Results: Encountered significant challenge
• Maintaining control
• Operator reaction time/ precise coordination
• Assessment:
• ASD tugs provide potential for great maneuverability/ control
• Difficult to coordinate manually
• Conclusion: Automation needed to increase the ability to
coordinate thruster vectors and maximize station keeping
15
Next Stage of Development
Addressing the Challenges
• To address the conclusions out of the test run Atlantic
Towing has worked with key suppliers to develop a system
for supporting deployment, retrieval and other associated
scopes in the Tidal projects which is:
• Lower cost
• Relatively easy to mobilize
• Adaptable to a variety of platforms
• Operationally effective in high current environments
16
Introducing TADPos
(Tug Assisted Dynamic Positioning System)
17
TADPos – How it Works
• Automatically maintains
position and heading
•
•
•
•
Position reference sensors
Wind sensors
Motion sensors
Gyro compasses
• All sensors feed into
computer program
• Computer program
calculates steering angle
and thruster output for
each thruster
18
Inside the Control Box
19
Plug & Play Modular DP System
• Key Features - Recap
• Containerized DP system installed on the deployment platform
(barge, catamaran, etc, what ever is required)
• DP system equipped with mathematical model of the vessels wind
and current drag profile
• Range of external sensors for all environmental data input
• External sensors combined with mathematical model of vessel
profile allows computer to calculate steering angle and thruster
output
• External control and power plugs that connect to any number of
ASD tugs
• Modifications to tugs to allow remote control by DP system
20
Plug & Play Modular DP System
• Key Benefits
• Eliminates need for mobilizing/ demobilizing of high cost assets
and equipment (locally available, quick and easy to mobilize)
• Installation/ removal relatively simple and low cost
• Flexible, can be installed on a variety of platforms depending on
turbine design or scope of work needed
• Operationally effective at aligning/ coordinating ASD tug’s
thrusters providing greater control in high current environments
• No long term commitments required for usage, once scope of
work complete, ASD tugs and DP system can be demobilized and
return to normal port operations in Halifax or Saint John
