+ Elk Island Catholic Schools Board of Trustees’ Highlights Regular Board Meeting - September 17, 2014 Division Mandate & Work Plan 2014-2015 ElCS’ Board of Trustees received the Division’s Mandate & Work Plan from Superintendent, Michael Hauptman. Aligned with the faith theme, Joyful Hearts - Sharing the Good News, the Plan identifies Division Priorities to ensure continuous improvement of faith formation and meaningful, engaging learning experiences for all students. “Over the past two years, we have worked towards a heightened model of service and assurance that supports the Board’s direction of faith and continuous growth,” explained Hauptman. “We have moved from being managers to leaders and facilitators of service and change. Our continued success requires us to reflect and celebrate what is working, to engage our teams in what needs improvement and to communicate clearly with all stakeholders.” The Mandate & Work Plan includes six key points as follows: 1. As a leader in the service of all stakeholders within the EICS community, I will provide a faith focused and service-based model within all areas of my responsibility. 2. That it is clearly stated in all plans the goals and actions that we are in alignment with the goals of faith formed 3. That assurance will be provided through our plans through the Superintendent to the Board and stakeholders. Communication that is transparent and timely will be included in our plan for success. That we define the supports and resources required to be successful in alignment with the “Essential Conditions for 4. 5. 6. continuous improvement. Implementation” that include; shared vision, leadership, research & evidence, resources, staff growth, time, and community engagement. That we outline the format and structure that is to be used for the co-creation of our plans. Establishing Focus: Joyful Hearts ... Sharing the Good News ! REAL was founded by members of the Catholic community who support EICS’ mission for the religious education for all students. During the 2014-2015 school year, REAL is sponsoring two motivating and entertaining presentations. In January, 2015, Face to Face Ministries (F2F) will hold School Retreats for all Grade 6 students. Guided by a vision that all people encounter Christ and embrace the call to be saints, F2F embraces the challenge of leading people back to a vibrant faith. F2F’s + School Retreats bring Catholic faith to life for students through music, keynote talks, prayer and a variety of other activities. In early March of 2015, 2By2 Ministries will provide presentations to EICS’ students, staff and communities. 2By2 was founded over 26 years ago by Jesse Manibusan and his wife Jodi, both of whom have been Catholic Ninjas since their earliest childhood years. Jessie and Jodi aspire to make a positive difference in the lives of young and old, to encourage and empower; to motivate and challenge everyone to live in Christ. Jesse sings, tells stories, plays guitar, and provides experiences that are highly volatile for the kindling of life and faith. Stay tuned for additional information about both of these exciting presentations from Alene Mutala, EICS’ Religious Education Consultant. Facilities Summer Projects go from Concept to Creation Schools were closed to students during July and August, but they were anything but quiet as EICS tackled scheduled maintenance across the Division. Ryan Stierman, SecretaryTreasurer, described the huge presence that facilities staff, summer students, caretakers and contractors had in schools over the summer. Improvements and repairs to windows, doors, grounds, parking lots, roofs, floors, fire alarm systems, kitchens, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical projects were completed, just to name a few of the projects. Maintaining the structural integrity of our buildings, as well as creating more functional and improved spaces, is a critical element in providing students and staff with the best possible learning environment. Research shows growing evidence of the positive correlation that exists between well-designed, properly-maintained and flexible school buildings. School Modernization Projects in Planning Stages In January of 2014, the province announced that under its Building Alberta Plan, two EICS schools had been identified for modernization projects. At St. Mary’s Catholic School in Vegreville, major interior upgrades will make more effective use of space and better meet specialized educational programming needs, such as Career and Technology Centers. In Camrose, Our Lady of Mount Pleasant Catholic School, interior modifications will make better use of space for increasing enrollments and programming, including the addition of a new Career and Technology Studies (CTS) space. Both projects are following a design-bid-build method, coordinated by Ed Paras, EICS’ Facilities Director. Ed and architect, Chris Woollard of ONPA Architects, have met several times with staff from each school to gather input towards the conceptual designs. Once Chris completes the construction drawings and technical specifications of each project, they will go out to contractors to bid on. Once the successful contractor is selected for each project, the construction, or build, phase will begin. As additional details become available on the design-bid-build cycle for each of these modernization projects, they will be shared and posted on the EICS and school websites. Joyful Hearts ...
