31st STUDENT COUNCIL SWORN IN
On 20 April 2011, the mantle of student leadership was passed from the
President of the 30th Student Council, Belmen Woo, to the President of the
31st Student Council, Rosamund Lim. Chapter 31 - A New Beginning, the
befitting theme driving the Student Council Investiture reflected the
expectations of the next generation of student councillors as they venture to
unlock new possibilities with the knowledge and wisdom bequeathed to them
by their predecessors.
For the first time in JJC’s history, the entire college watched as 41 Student
Councillors, led by Rosamund Lim, were sworn into office while 24 Cabinet
Councillors and 48 House Councillors stepped down. This new framework
for the student body, in which the Cabinet Council and House Councils are
subsumed into one Student Council, is a reflection of the school’s enhanced
direction for student leadership.
WE ARE THE TOUCH RUGBY CHAMPIONS! AGAIN!!
Our VPs, Mr Simon Leow, Mrs Poon and Mr Cheriyan with our girls’ rugby team
and their CCA Teacher-in-charge Ms Law
JJ Touch Rugby has done it again! For two consecutive years, the girls
brought one and a half years of tough training to fruition by earning the right
to be crowned National Champions for 2011 on 11 May.
It was certainly no mean feat coming up against traditional rugby
powerhouse, SAJC, in the Finals and triumphing with a score of 2-0.
The team also maintained a proud, unbeaten record throughout the
tournament, beating HCI, NYJC and NJC. After months of sheer hard work
and determination, the girls truly deserve every accolade they now get.

winner of the Vocal Solo English category (right)
Started in 1997, JJ Talentime is a platform for students
to showcase their aesthetic capabilities in four categories:
Vocal Solo (English), Vocal Solo (Mandarin), Vocal Group
and Dance Group. JJ Talentime 2011 – Feed Your
Imagination was held in The Mrs Lee Choon Guan Concert
Hall at Anglo Chinese School (Barker Road) on 29 April.
It was a vibrant night of song, dance and fun! More
importantly, it demonstrated our students’ talents and
helped build a sense of solidarity and community amongst
members of the JJC family.
JJ WINS A MERIT AWARD FROM MINDEF FOR
PHYSICAL FITNESS PERFORMANCE
Our college won the MINDEF Physical Fitness Performance

institutes of technical education to encourage their students
to achieve a high standard of physical fitness.

programme which helps ensure our students’ physical
fitness, especially that of our male Singaporean students
who will enlist into National Service after they finish their
college education.
JJ GUITAR ENSEMBLE AT THE SYF
MALAY DANCE GROUP: IT’S A SILVER!
The JJ Guitar Ensemble
On 27 April, 33 members of the JJC Guitar Ensemble competed at the
Singapore Youth Festival held at Republic Polytechnic. The ensemble was
only formed in December 2010, and this was their first ever SYF competition. Having had less than three months to train for this national competition, the members worked hard and managed to earn a Bronze Award.
Congratulations, JJC Guitar Ensemble, you have done the college proud!
STUDENTS WIN NATURE PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION
The Demure Girls of the Malay Dance Group
The Malay Dance Group of 13 girls and 7 boys participated
in the 2011 Singapore Youth Festival Malay Dance
Competition.
For most of the dancers, it was their first appearance in SYF.
They practised very hard under the supervision of our Malay
Dance Instructor, Ms Mazlina Buang. Throughout the journey,
they understood the importance of resilience and
determination. They also learnt about the value of working
together to achieve success. Their hard work paid off when
their dance item, entitled “The Joys of Youth” won them the
Silver Award.

CHINESE CULTURAL SOCIETY WINS SILVER AT THE SYF
CHINESE DRAMA COMPETITION
The Chinese Cultural Society participated in the Singapore Youth
Festival Chinese Drama Competition on 28 April 2011. They put
on a play entitled, ‘Oracle Bones’.
The performance traced the history of the oracle bones which are
pieces of bones or turtle shells with Chinese characters inscribed on
them. The oracle bones were declared a national treasure. Prized for
their healing power during the Qing Dynasty, there were many who
wanted to claim possession of them. These included the British
soldiers involved in the Opium War in 1840 and the Japanese
soldiers who fought in World War II.
In 2004, the oracle bones from the Yin Dynasty were sold for $48
million at an auction. In the competition, our students gave their very
best and won the Silver Award. Their perseverance and passion really
paid off!

Knowledge of the self is the mother of all knowledge. So it is
incumbent on me to know my self, to know it completely, to know
its minutiae, its characteristics, its subtleties, and its very atoms.

A huge turnout at the PW Sharing in the hall
The annual Project Work Sharing was held on 6 April. The
event served as a platform for our J1 students to better
understand the demands of PW as well as network with their
seniors to gain ideas and share resources.
A total of 19 J2 PW groups were specially chosen to
showcase their project ideas via display boards and project
idea prototypes. These visual aids facilitated much animated
discussion. They also spurred the informal exchange of
valuable ideas which helped the J2s reflect more fruitfully on
their PW journey and helped the J1s generate fresh project
insights and perspectives.
EXTENDED LIBRARY HOURS
The library will be open till 9.45pm from 26 July 2011 to
27 October 2011. This is to provide a conducive study
