PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
SCHOOL COUNCIL BIG BREAKFAST
Many families attended the School
Council Big Breakfast on Monday 3rd
February. There was a feast of fruit
salad, pancakes and mini muffins for
children and adults to enjoy before
students headed off to class, and parents
departed for work or the day’s activities.
The breakfast was a wonderful way of
welcoming new families to the school and
for old friends to meet over a pancake
or coffee. Thanks to the School Council
members who worked before and during
the event to make it such a success.
BRUNSWICK MONTESSORI CHILDREN’S
HOUSE COMMENCES SESSIONS
The Montessori Children’s house located
on the school land adjacent to the oval
commenced operating a kindergarten on
Monday of this week!! The building and
playground have now been completed
and the centre has welcomed the first
group of 3 year olds to be enrolled. It
is a very exciting time, as BNWPS now
shares its daily life with the staff, parents
and children from the Children’s House
community. It has been lovely to have a
number of parents from the kindergarten
already dropping by for a coffee at
Sprout. We join together to welcome our
new neighbours, and look forward to
sharing together the rewarding work of
giving great experiences to children aged
three to twelve years old.
YEAR LEVEL INFORMATION EVENING
Parents are invited to attend year level
information evening sessions on Tuesday
11th February. Teaching teams will

20 QUESTIONS NEW
(OR EXISTING) PARENTS
MAY BE ASKING! (FOLLOWED
BY HOPEFULLY HELPFUL
ANSWERS)
How do I order a lunch
order for my child? Write
the order on an envelope
and enclose money. The
envelope goes into the
lunch order box in each
room. You can provide
your own lunch box
or buy paper bag. Menus are available
from the office. No lunches available on
Wednesday.
What is a ‘Student Free Day’? The
department of Education allows schools
to hold four student free days a year.
Students do not attend, but staff use
this time to report to parents or attend
professional development. See BNWPS
calendar for scheduled dates. Tuesday
28th January was a student free day.
What does a School Council do?
School Council assists in the efficient
governance of the school, ensuring that
decisions affecting students are made
with the best interests of the children as
a primary consideration. School council
members are nominated and voted for by
parents for a two year term. More details
in future newsletters. There is also a
Student School Council at BNWPS.
What are School Council
subcommittees? The work of School
Council takes place with a subcommittee
structure. These committees include
– OSHC, finance, Community Events
Team, Education Committee, Buildings
and grounds and Sprout. More details in
future newsletters.
What is a Community Events Team?
The CET is a fabulous group of hard
working, fun loving parents who support
children’s learning and school experience
by organising fundraising and school
community social events.
Can I meet with my child’s teacher?
Yes, you can arrange a meeting if you
have a question or want to offer to
help in the classroom. Best to make an
appointment if you expect the meeting to
take a while as teachers have a schedule
of after-school meetings each week.

OUR SHINING STARS WILL RETURN NEXT WEEK!
What is a Plant & Produce Market?
Wonderful parents and friends donate
produce, home grown vegetables or
handmade craft which is sold in a market
on a Friday afternoon as a fundraiser.
What is International Food Night? This
is a school social activity, where families
bring food to share with others. This can
be a family favourite or an international
cuisine. Commences 6.00pm Wed 12th
March.
How do I get involved in Community
Events Team activities? Please see
the newsletter for information and
opportunities to get involved in CET
activities. The notice board near the
undercover area also has upcoming
events listed. You can give your name to
be included on a CET email distribution
list.
When will I know when my child’s
class is performing at Friday
assembly? The classroom presentation
roster for Friday afternoon assemblies is
listed each week in the newsletter.
Can I drop my child off early in the
playground because I need to start
work early? No. Supervision is only
provided between the hours of 8.45am
and 3.45pm. Please enrol in OSHC to
provide this service.
What about first aid for my child?
The school has trained first aid officers.
Parents will be notified of small grazes
etc. via a note being sent home. For more
serious bumps or accidents parents will
be phoned.
Does the school recycle? We recycle
paper and cardboard. Co-mingled
materials from Sprout and school
kitchens are also recycled. Compost is
produced from organic waste produced
by the school.
Can I be an environmental activist
with Greenpeace or The Sea Shepherd
Society? Yes! But the next best way
to save the planet is to get the school
newsletter emailed to you instead of
having it printed off!
What is a Shining Star? Each week
awards are given to student who have
tried particularly hard with their work
or have been outstanding citizens of our
school. These are also published in the
newsletter.
Can all children use the shelter shed?
Use of the shelter shed is a special Year
6 privilege. Students at this level are
expected to take on student leadership
responsibilities within the school.
Can I help out at Sprout? Kris and
Marni would appreciate any time you can
volunteer to assist at Sprout.
Who are Pop and Nick? Pop is the
grandfather and Nick is a parent of
children at our school. They volunteer
their time in working on maintenance
and grounds works. Pop and Nick are not
on the school payroll. All job requests are
to come through the Principal please.
What can I do to reduce traffic
congestion in Culloden Street in the
morning and afternoon? Parking is
available in Wales Street or other roads
nearby. A short walk to the school
entrance is a healthy experience. We
appreciate not all parents can ride or
walk to school, but thanks to those
who do!
What happens if I don’t read the
school newsletter each week? You
won’t know what’s going on in the
school and your child or your family
could miss out on some significant news
or a special school event.

NUT AWARE: ALLERGIC REACTIONS
TO NUTS
Brunswick North West Primary is ‘a nut
aware school’. Some students may have
a severe reaction known as anaphylaxis
when exposed to nuts. These students
have a medical action plan to manage
this intolerance. This plan has been
authorised by a medical practitioner and
directs the staff to use an injector known
as an EpiPen if required.
As a result we ask that you consider the
following:
•Not providing loose nuts and/or food
with nut additives such as peanut
butter when preparing snacks and
lunches for your own children to eat at
school.
•That you discuss with your child the
importance of NOT sharing their food
with others.
•Please remind your child not to share
drink containers and/or eating utensils.
•If you are providing cakes, biscuits etc
for the class, that they come with a list
of ingredients.
These steps will help reduce the risk of
accidental exposure.
Anaphylaxis is on the increase in our
community and in our schools. All
parents are urged to consider this and
the needs of other students’ health in
the choices made of foods being sent to
school.
The parents of the anaphylactic students
in our school community are most
grateful of your empathy in this matter.
Department of Education and Early
Childhood Development Anaphylaxis
Guideline 2013
“It is not recommended that schools ban
food or other products known to cause
anaphylaxis because:
•It can create complacency amongst
staff and students
•It does not eliminate the presence of
hidden allergens
•It is difficult to ‘ban’ all triggers: all
triggers are not limited to peanuts &
nuts.
It is preferable that the school raise
awareness about anaphylaxis in the
school community so that there is
an increased understanding of the
condition. The school may also wish
to help parents/carers to identify more
suitable food options for their children.”
More information about anaphylaxis can
be found at www.allergyfacts.org.au/

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL
MESSAGE
It is very exciting that Brunswick North West
Primary School is now able to increase the
number of instruments students can learn at
school. Students now have a choice of strings,
guitar, drums or recorder. I can’t wait to see
what this looks like for our school band!
As a musician myself, I am a firm believer in
the benefits of learning a musical instrument.
Music affects our lives tremendously and
touches each of us in ways that often go
unnoticed.
Playing a musical instrument is a consuming
and contagious joy. Reading music also
helps a musician develop a good grasp of
basic mathematics. Time signatures, quarter
notes and rhythms all aid in developing an
appreciation of mathematics. Playing an
instrument can be a great source of stress
relief and there are other physical benefits
to playing a musical instrument. Brass and
woodwind instruments require breath control
and ensure stretching of the air sacs in the
lungs, preventing them from hardening and
losing elasticity. The movement of the hands,
arms and fingers during playing can limber
up joints and relieve pain. The discipline that
is developed during long hours of practicing
can be well put to use in everyday life.
Perseverance is also learned by the musician
and can only be taught through experience.
These life lessons serve the musician well
in daily life and help to develop a strong
character.
Music encourages creativity. It inspires
thought and cooperation amongst peers
while providing an outlet for creative
energy. Performing in public can be a
wonderful experience and teaches selfconfidence, integrity, and a sense of pride
and accomplishment.
The musician learns to arrive on time to
performances and practices, be considerate
of others in the band and discovers how to
determine when the timing is right to take
centre stage or the back seat. Becoming
a member of a band can be an enormous
source of comfort to a musician. The social
interaction and feedback from peers help
to develop a sense of belonging. Personal
accountability and cultural involvement can
increase a musician’s personal integrity.
Musical threads are woven throughout our
culture and history. A song has the power to
trigger a flood of emotions with the first few
notes and bring back vivid experiences in
an instant. The musician is privileged to take
part in these experiences with the listener. So
to all our new and continuing instrumental
music teachers, welcome to Brunswick North
West Primary School.
Julie Andrews
at BNWPS
Welcome back for another fantastic year at OSHC! We have already been
having lots of fun, trying out new craft activities, building cubbies and playing
plenty of games. We have a new team of staff this year – some old faces and
some new: Fiona, Steve, Dominic, Christina, Felicity, Amy, Tanya and Liam will
be caring for the children. Please feel free to ask us about OSHC activities, etc
during Before or Aftercare sessions. Please also approach us with feedback – we
love to hear suggestions of ways we can further enhance our program.
OSHC enrolments for 2014: Please remember to get your enrolment
forms in as soon as possible so we have time to process them (ideally 7 days
notice before your child’s first attendance would be preferred!). Your account
also needs to be paid up to date before we can accept bookings for your child
in 2014. New families need to pay the $20 admin fee up front when you lodge
your form (existing families will have the fee added to your account and can it
can be paid with your regular fortnightly account).
OSHC bookings for 2014: Both permanent and casual bookings are
currently available for every session. Please refer to Parent Handbook for
details of booking types and charges. Permanent bookings must be in writing
and please make it clear when you wish your bookings to start.
Student Free Day – Tuesday 25th February: We are planning
to run an OSHC session for this day from 7:30am to 6pm, which will be
$60 for the day (eligible for CCB/CCR) and will include all food, snacks and
activities. We will need a minimum of about 12 children for the session to go
ahead. Please let us know if you think you would be likely to require care for
this day, so we can start arranging staffing and activities.
Accounts: Will be issued this weekend via email (or printed if requested),
and will then be issued fortnightly. Payment is due within 7 days and can be
paid directly into the school bank or at the school office. (Note: OSHC staff
cannot accept payments).
Contacting OSHC: To contact OSHC, speak to the OSHC staff directly or
email us on: [email protected]
Next OSHC Committee Meeting: Monday 10th February, 7pm
– all welcome.
BNWPS COMMUNITY EVENTS TEAM (CET)
The Community Events Team is up and running in 2014. We are a group of
parents who volunteer our time to help the school with community events
such as the International Food Night, Winter Solstice Night and the End of
Year Picnic.
These community events have always proved to be fun relaxed gatherings
where families get to mingle and build friendships. They reflect the inclusive
nature of BNWPS.
The Community Events Team is also involved with organising fundraising
activities such as the; End of Term & Bunnings BBQs, Plant and Produce
Stall, the Trivia Night and the Winter Magic Market. New for 2014, we are
excited to announce a Spellathon to be held in Term 1. Details to come soon.
When the Community Events Team gets together we have a lot of fun while
planning the school events. BNWPS have 200 families who we would love to
come and help us, great or small. Many of our 2013 helpers are off on new
adventures. We cannot emphasize enough the need for some more families
to get involved for success this year.
If this is something you may be interested in, or just go on the email list,
feel free to contact me, Samantha Cohen: [email protected]
I am also available at school Tuesday to Friday and would love to hear any
new ideas and get to know our new families at BNWPS.
Thank you
Samantha Cohen

WORK FROM UNIT JHW
To start off the New Year in JHW 1/2 in mathematics we have been
looking at patterns. What better way to do this than to break out the beads
and create jewellery. Not only do these pieces of art look beautiful, every
bracelet had its own unique pattern. So if you see one of these bracelets on
a wrist in the playground, see if you can crack the code!
THE CHOOK &
GUINEA PIG CLUB
Thank you to Shal (Unit SM) and her team of helpers
for their daily care of the animals.
Thank you to the Lucioni family for their care last
weekend. This weekend the Van De Wall family is
caring for the animals – many thanks! The roster for
weekend care is on the noticeboard near the office.
We urgently need families to care for the animals,
so please put your name on the roster if you can
help. Many thanks!

PLANT AND PRODUCE MARKET
FRIDAY THE 14TH OF FEBRUARY
– 3.30PM IN THE UNDERCOVER AREA
The plant and produce market is run once a month and is a great
fundraiser for our school. We sell fresh produce, hand baked goods and
any array or crafts and plants that comes our way.
If you have any excess of produce at home, fruit or veggies, or
are willing to bake some cakes, muffins, biscuits, slices, savoury
snacks, jams, we would greatly appreciate any contribution. We also
welcome any craft you are willing to donate.
This market will land on Valentine’s Day so it will have a “hearts”
theme to it.
We are always looking for helpers in baking and serving on the day. If
you are able to offer your assistance, please contact Maryam Clarkson
on 0425 767 438 or email [email protected]
