Principal’s Piece
Welcome back to Term 3.
I hope you were able to make the most of your break in
routine.
We welcome Martin Barber who has taken over the
Science NIT role. Martin has been working in a similar
role at Renmark North PS. We also welcome back
Julie John from Long Service Leave. Kirby Kingham is
on leave for the first 5 weeks of this term.
Barmera PS has been selected to conduct NAPLAN
trials. This is an exercise involving our Yr 3, 5 and 7
students doing trial tests in Reading and Numeracy so
that the level of difficulty can be assessed for next
year’s tests. These trials will be run by an independent
assessor and will involve Yr 3 and Yr 5 students doing
their tests next Monday and Yr 7 students on
Wednesday.
We returned to school this week to find that the date for
the Riverland SAPSASA Athletics Carnival had been
changed from Friday week 4 (Aug 15th) to Friday of
week 3 (Aug 8th) due to some district administrative
reasons. Unfortunately this now clashes with our Yr
3,4,5 camp (which had been purposefully planned to
avoid the SAPSASA athletics). Despite our strong
objections we now need to deal with this situation.
As a result of this we needed to move quickly to finish
our selection trials for the 200m, high jump and discus,
which we did yesterday. The other events were
decided on Sports Day. This now allows us to see
exactly which students are affected and negotiate with
families how we might manage this. We will be
contacting families in the next day or so to look at some
options.
We do have a “challenge period” where students who
were ill, away or didn’t have suitable footwear etc, can
challenge for a position in the team. The challenge
period will be open until next Wednesday.

Sports day at the end of last term proved to be
a fantastic day with excellent weather and
strong parent support. Congratulations to all
students who competed in great fashion,
displaying enormous effort and sportsmanship.
Well done to Hawdon (Yellow) on their win. I
would particularly like to thank The Gov.
Council Sport & Rec Committee, Michael
Allder, Lori Sandland and Darrin Warren for
their efforts and planning which resulted in a
highly successful day.
Last of all, congratulations to Sam Mitchell who
was awarded the Male Community Member of
the Year at the NAIDOC celebrations during the
holidays. Well done Sam!
Terry
