Congratulations on making it into the University of Johannesburg, we acknowledge this as a prominent step in your overall success. However
sometimes good, is not good enough. Only the best are remembered, and it is exactly why Afslaan stands as what it is today. What immediately
sets you aside from the rest is that, you are soon to be part of over 200 fellow brothers and sisters that reside in Afslaan who share a raging
passion for victory, you have been awarded the opportunity of joining the elite, but your place in this house will not simply be handed to you on a
silver platter. Your place is earned. Through this you will gain either you’re most enjoyable moments as a first year resident or you will endure
unpleasant circumstances depending on your attitude.
Afslaan is the oldest residence in this institution and prides itself in a rich cultural background, we stand as the Romans. Strong, proud and
passionate. I urge you to join and share in our greatness. But as the saying goes “Rome was not built in one day”. It has taken many to see us
raised and establish ourselves as the great Romans of Afslaan. If you have it in you, you too shall experience the great heights. For when they
talk about royalty on a hill, you too shall be included. It will not come easily, you as a pleb shall not simply enter our home and declare respect.
All of whom you shall encounter have gone through the same process that has allowed growth and earned them their stripes. Bear in mind that
you will never stand alone for there shall be others like you. The secret to your success however is learning to embrace the success of all.
As you step into this new environment, do not shy away. This is a place for you to discover new
opportunities and create everlasting friendships. A chance for a fresh beginning, have fun and make
the most of it. Ultimately you are here to learn so allow yourself to be a student. There will be great
memories, cherish them.
I wish you all the best and remind you that it will not always be easy, but this is a path many have

Welcome to Afslaan Sport Residence, a novelty that is still in its infancy. You are part of history in the making… A pioneer that will tread
where very few has treaded before. This momentous endeavour comes with great opportunity and great responsibility. Afslaan is a residence
with a rich past and boasts with great sport stars like Francois Pienaar as well as influential business greats and we are confident that you will
contribute to this history. Afslaan is unique and different in that it hosts males and females.
As a residence, Afslaan Sport Residence, prides itself in striving for success in everything we do, be it academics, sport and culture. Being a
student is one of the most exciting and fulfilling journey of one’s life, a preparation to a successful and prolific adulthood. This journey comes
with great responsibility and accountability, in reality you are the master of your own fate. There will be ample support structures, but how
you manage your time is solely your responsibility. Your experience in Afslaan Sport Residence will form rich bonds that will hold you in good
stead and the traditions and values you learn will help you in your future endeavours.
As part of the support structure at your disposal is the Afslaan House Committee under the leadership of Siyanda Gumede, a Primarius
committed to the success of every aspect of his portfolio. He leads from the front and we are very privileged to have him at Afslaan. In
addition, mentors and academic advisors will furthermore assist you in your transition from school to University to ensure both academic and
sporting success while at UJ.
Part of the Afslaan tradition is embedded in 3 pillars of importance amongst the Roman legions, which is self-belief, character and the ability
and willingness to serve others, which all contribute to a richer and well-rounded individual.
In closing, I hope you have a fantastic 2014 and we are looking forward to welcome you in the history books of Afslaan Sport Residence.

The Consulate is commonly known as the House Committee or HK. The HK consists of 6 members that stand democratically
elect as leaders and representatives of Afslaan, The prim (for your sake, better known as REX) is the Chairperson and is
responsible for all activities in the residence. Together with the second in charge, Vice-Chairperson (Princeps), Treasurer and
the Secretary make up the executive committee. The rest of the consulate consists of two additional consuls (members).
The Consulate are responsible for all orientation activities regarding the first years, which involves the strict implementation of
the orientation program as approved by the Dean of students.

RAG will be amongst your first encounters as a first year resident. It is a lot of fun, socializing, partying and a lot of
blommetjies. However it is also a lot of work, THE OBJECTIVE IS BUILDING A WINNING FLOAT. The Rag float
is something that Afslaan takes immense pride in. three weeks of sweating blood is what it takes to bring about an
Afslaan Rag float! In previous years Afslaan has remained amongst the top 3, 2014 we came in third, but we
intended to win in 2015.
Houses are grouped together, and this year we will be RAGing with Lebone, Annirand and Hector Peterson. It is
during this time you are going to make new friends and get to know seniors. Enjoy this time. Our theme this year:
SOCIAL AWARENESS AND INJUSTICE. A bit part of RAG of course is giving (Remember and Give). So we will
also be engaging with the community and giving back.

Community Engagement
Community engagement is not about offering tangibles or
your time but it’s about giving hope, belief that there is a way
out “you give little when you give off your possessions it is
when you give yourself that you truly give.”
One of Afslaans greatest saying is “Gee jou hart vir Afslaan’
and we do just that, but not limited to Afslaan. The purpose of developing a culture for
community engagement is to remind Afslaan and prospective first years, how fortunate
we are to be living in Afslaan and to have the opportunity to study at a well-recognized
university that has a brilliant reputation in terms of academics and sport. By our
engagements I hope all first years will learn to be more generous in what they have and to
be humbled at how blessed they are to have them. This year we took on various projects

Focussing too much on athletics and not putting much effort into

I study smart when I’m under pressure; I’ve got a skill to eliminate
concepts and theorems that are not exam type questions

Let me cut to the chase- your first three weeks here may be a bliss of happiness to most or a bit of a nightmare for the minority, one thing for sure is, it
will be tough and tiring but all hopefully worth it when they announce the WINNERS FOR FIRST YEARS CONCERT 2015.
As you may be aware, UJ APK Campus has high excellence annual cultural residence competitions which include a proud tradition of a competitive and
well-finished First year’s concert in which all houses on campus participate. The bar has previously been set and expectations are exceptionally high for
the legendary Afslaan. In the past years Afslaan has seen itself dominate its way into finals, and go on to win first year’s concert, unfortunately this
year(2014) not so much... You know what this means right? There is a throne we need to reclaim!
Daar is verskeie Kulturele aktiwiteite op Kampus onder meer :Serrie , Sangfees, Debat en Toneelfees. Afslaan Kultuur is nie meer slegs ‘n portefeulje nie,
maar ‘n instelling. Dis als of niks en tweede plek nie meer goed genoeg nie, om te wen is…NET AS JY JOUSELF TOELAAT OM DIT GENIET. Remember, this
is the first chance for you to prove yourself to the house and let me be clear: our success over the past years has been based on hard work, perseverance
and sacrifice, so BRING YOUR ALL. Take part in Afslaan culture whether or not you took part in culture at school, it really is an unforgettable and

If you are reading this, then it means that you have been accepted to live in AFSLAAN SPORTS RESIDENCE – “The Roman Empire”. At this
stage you are probably thinking about how life will be without your parents/guardian, a life where you make your own rules and decisions etc. To
some this may be an exciting thought - the thought of all the freedom, partying and socializing and to others this may be a rather frightening
thought – the thought of having to look after yourself, cooking for yourself, living in a whole new and different environment with over 200 other
people, and the thought of varsity life.
This is where the MENTORS come into play. A mentor in simple English can be defined as a wise and trusted counselor or teacher. A Mentor in
Afslaan is like your “Formal friend”. We are a team of dedicated ladies and gents appointed to assist first years (PLEBS) with the transition from
high school life to university life. We are the problem solvers and advisers for first years. Our main goal is to help YOU to be able to balance your
Academics, sports and social lives (in that order) and also to groom and shape you into mature Ladies and Gentlemen. Mutual respect will be the
key foundation of the relationship between Mentors and Plebs.
Afslaan will be your new home for the next couple of years; the people you meet here will be your brothers and sisters. The Afslaan culture
eliminates all barriers and boundaries in order for us to be a family. But like everything else in life, you have to earn or deserve your place in the
house.
