Bailey, USMC Major General Paul W. Brier, USMC Deputy Commandant, Plans, Policies & Operations Commanding General, 4th Marine Division Lieutenant General Ronald L. Bailey currently serves as the Deputy Commandant Plans, Polices, and Operations. Lieutenant General Bailey was born in St. Augustine, Florida and graduated from Austin Peay State University, Clarksville, TN in 1977 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. On 1 July 1977, he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant. After graduation from The Basic School, Infantry Officers Course and the Basic Communication Officers Course in August 1978, he was ordered to the 3d Marine Division in Okinawa, Japan to serve with 2d Battalion, 4th Marines as a Rifle Platoon Commander and 81mm Mortar Platoon Commander. In October 1979, he was assigned to MCRD, Parris Island, SC as a Series Commander, Battalion S-3 and Commanding Officer of Company F, 2d Recruit Training Battalion. During this tour, he earned a Master’s Degree in Business Management and Administration from Webster University. In August 1983, he returned to Quantico to attend Amphibious Warfare School and after graduation he joined 1st Battalion, 6th Marines at Camp Lejeune and served as the Commanding Officer of Company C and Weapons Company Commander. In 1987, he transferred to Kings Bay, GA where he activated the Security Forces Company, and served as the Guard Company Commander. From 1989 to 1992, he served at Marine Barracks Washington, DC as Department Chief, Professional Military Education and as the Parade Commander. In 1992, he attended Army Command and General Staff College and upon graduation he joined 2d Light Armored Infantry Battalion as the Executive Officer and then in 1995 he assumed command of the 2d Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion. From August 1997 to 1998, he attended National War College, Washington, DC where he earned his second Master’s Degree in National Security Strategy. In June 1998, he was assigned to Headquarters Marine Corps, Manpower Management office as the ground Lieutenant Colonels Monitor. In June 2000, he was assigned as the Deputy, Joint Contact Team Program and Plans Officer, J-5, Headquarters US European Command, Stuttgart, Germany. From 2002 to 2004, Lieutenant General Bailey commanded the 2d Marine Regiment. In 2004 he was assigned as the CMC National Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations and in July 2005, he was assigned as the Director, Expeditionary Warfare School in Quantico, Virginia. In May 2006, he assumed duties as Deputy Director for Operations, J-3 Joint Staff. In July 2007, he assumed command of the 3d Marine Expeditionary Brigade, and concurrently began duties as the Deputy Commanding General, III MEF. In August 2009, he transferred to San Diego, California and assumed command of Marine Corps Recruit Depot/Western Recruiting Region. He assumed command of Marine Corps Recruiting Command in January 2011. In June 2011, Lieutenant General Bailey was assigned to Camp Pendleton, California and assumed command as the Commanding General 1st Marine Division. In 2013, he was promoted to his current rank and assigned to Headquarters Marine Corps as the Deputy Commandant for Plans, Policies, and Operations. Lieutenant General Bailey’s awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal with bronze oak leaf, Legion of Merit with combat V, Meritorious Service Medal with 2 gold stars, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with gold star, the Navy Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, and the Combat Action Ribbon. Major General Brier assumed command of the 4th Marine Division on 18 June 2014. Currently, he also serves as the Chair of the Secretary of the Navy’s Marine Corps Reserve Policy Board. His previous general officer assignments include service in Norfolk as Vice Commander, U.S. Marine Corps Forces Command; at sea aboard the command ship USS MOUNT WHITNEY as Deputy Joint Force Maritime Component Commander, JTF-Odyssey Dawn (Libya 2011); and overseas as Commander, U.S. Marine Forces Europe and U.S. Marine Forces Africa. As a colonel, he commanded the 6th Civil Affairs Group in al-Anbar Province (2005-2006) and MARCENT’s Coordination Element in Afghanistan (2008); and served as Chief of Staff, 2nd Marine Division; USMC liaison to the Territory of Guam; and Marine Corps Service Planner, Joint Staff Branch, HQMC. As a lieutenant colonel, he commanded 3d Battalion, 14th Marines, and, as a captain, a 4th Marine Division howitzer battery employed in the defense of Saudi Arabia (1990-1991) and liberation of Kuwait (1991). Other assignments include: Chief, Civil Affair Branch, Joint Warfighting Center; Officer Selection Officer Seattle; and ground combat element assignments in the 1st and 4th Marine Divisions as battalion executive and operations officer, tank company executive officer, fire direction officer, and platoon commander. Born at Ft. Ord, California, into a Marine family, Major General Brier attended St. Martin’s Episcopal School in Metairie, Louisiana, and graduated from St. Stephen’s School in Alexandria, Virginia. Receiving a Naval ROTC Scholarship, he attended the Virginia Military Institute, graduating in 1981 with a BS in Civil Engineering and a commission in the U.S. Marine Corps. He is a graduate of the Defense Resources Management Institute at the Naval Postgraduate School, Joint Forces Staff College, Air War College, and U.S. Army War College, earning a Master’s of Strategic Studies in 2003. His education also includes studies at the National Defense University as a CAPSTONE fellow and at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government and Graduate School of Design. A Joint Qualified Officer (Level III (JQO) & IV (FO/GO)), his joint experience includes commanding a Service component at two geographic combatant commands, deputy commander of a joint task force functional component, Service Planner to the Joint Staff, and branch chief for a functional combatant command. His awards include the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal with combat “V” and gold star, and the Combat Action Ribbon. Major General Brier and is his wife, Rhonda, have two children: Austin and Allison. Major General Herman S. Clardy III, USMC Commanding General, 3d Marine Division Agenda Post the Colors Musical Support provided by the Marine Band Quintet Major General Clardy was commissioned on 13 May 1983 after graduating from the University of South Carolina with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. He has a Master of Science in Management from Troy State University and a Master of Arts (with Distinction) in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College. Major General Clardy is an infantry officer with numerous leadership positions within the operating forces and organizations responsible for training and education. As a lieutenant and captain, Major General Clardy commanded heavy machinegun, rifle, and weapons platoons with 3d Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, and Company B of 2d Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion. As a lieutenant colonel, he commanded 3d Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion participating in combat operations in Operations ENDURING FREEDOM and IRAQI FREEDOM. As a colonel, he commanded 2d Marine Regiment and Regimental Combat Team 2 during Operation IRAQI FREEDOM. He also served as the director of Expeditionary Warfare School. As a brigadier general, he was the Commanding General of Marine Air Ground Task Force Training Command and the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center. Major General Clardy served in multiple staff positions throughout his career. As a Captain, he was the operations officer of 2d Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion and a tactics instructor at The Basic School and Infantry Officers Course. As a major, he was the Marine Officer Instructor at Tulane University and the Community Relations Branch Head for the Division of Public Affairs, Headquarters Marine Corps. As a lieutenant colonel, he was the operations officer of 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable) participating in Operation JOINT GUARDIAN in Kosovo. He also served as the expeditionary operations officer for II Marine Expeditionary Force. As a colonel, he was assigned as the Assistant Chief of Staff, G-5 (Community Policy, Planning and Liaison) for Marine Corps Base, Camp Smedley D. Butler, and Marine Corps Bases, Japan. As a brigadier general, he served as the Director of Operations, Plans, Policies, and Operations at Headquarters, U.S. Marine Corps. Major General Clardy was promoted to his present rank in July 2013. He is currently the Commanding General, 3d Marine Division. Major General Clardy’s personal decorations include the Legion of Merit (with two Gold Stars and Combat Distinguishing Device), Bronze Star (with the Combat Distinguishing Device), Meritorious Service Medal (with two Gold Stars), Navy-Marine Corps Commendation Medal (with two Gold Stars) and a Combat Action Ribbon. Nicholson, USMC Major General Brian D. Beaudreault, USMC Commanding General, 1st Marine Division Commanding General, 2d Marine Division Major General Nicholson was born in Toronto, Canada, and is a 1979 graduate of The Citadel in Charleston, SC. He holds a Master’s of Science Degree from the US Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. From 1980-1982, Major General Nicholson served as a Platoon and Company Commander in 3rd Bn, 1st Marines at Camp Pendleton, California. From 1982-1985 he was assigned to Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, where he served as a Series and Company Commander. Following Amphibious Warfare School at Quantico, Virginia in 1986, Major General Nicholson served as a Platoon Commander at Officers Candidate School until joining 3/7 in the fall of 1986. He then served as a Rifle Company Commander for Lima 3/7 and subsequently Delta 1/9 until May of 1990. From June 1990 to July 1993 Major General Nicholson served as a Company Officer and Instructor at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Following completion of The US Army Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, in 1994, he was assigned to the Middle East as a United Nations Observer for UNTSO Palestine. In 1995, he reported to Camp Lejeune, NC. as the Executive Officer of the Wolfpack of 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion. In 1997, Major General Nicholson assumed the duties as the 2nd Marine Division G-3 Operations Officer until taking Command of the WARLORDS of 2nd Bn, 2nd Marines in 1999. Following a deployment to the Balkans AO with 26 MEU, he was re-assigned in 2001 as the Executive Officer of the 2nd Marine Regiment. Upon graduation from the NATO Defense College in Rome, Italy in 2002, he was assigned to NATO HQ in Brussels, Belgium where he served as the Ground Forces Planner for the US Military Delegation to NATO. In July 2004, Major General Nicholson reported to the 1st Marine Division HQ at Camp Blue Diamond, Ramadi, Iraq, where he served as the Division G-3. In July of 2005, he assumed command of the 5th Marine Regiment and deployed with them to Fallujah, Iraq from January 2006 to February 2007. Major General Nicholson served as the Deputy Commanding General, Marine Corps Combat Development Command at Quantico from November 2007 until August 2008. From January of 2009 through June 2010. he served as the Commanding General of the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade, Task Force Leatherneck, deploying with them for a year to southern Afghanistan. Upon return from this combat tour he was assigned as the Senior Military Assistant to the Deputy Secretary of Defense in Washington, D.C., from July 2010 to February 2012. In February of 2012, Major General Lawrence D. Nicholson returned to Afghanistan for a year serving as the Operations Officer for the ISAF Joint Command in Kabul, Afghanistan. Major General Nicholson assumed the duties as Commanding General, 1st Marine Division 10 June 2013. Major General Beaudreault graduated from the University of Massachusetts and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in May 1983.
