Young Israel of Greater Cleveland
Sept/Oct 2014 Monthly Newsletter-Elul/Tishrei/Cheshvan 5774/5775
From the Rabbi’s Shtender
Dear Member,
The human soul may be compared to gold. The more we polish an object made of gold, the
brighter it gets. While a certain degree of shine may indeed be beautiful, it may be less than the
maximum possible, and hence, relatively defective.
The word ‫ חטא‬which we generally translate as “sin” or “mistake”, can also mean a “defect”.
Since growth is an endless path, we can always strive to reach a higher level than we are now.
Therefore, we can always consider ourselves relatively “defective” in the sense that we can always
find room to improve.
As we prepare for the upcoming Yomim Noraim, let us work on improving ourselves, and may
that progress bring us joy.
May we all be blessed with a year of success and growth and may Hashem bring peace and
safety to all Jews worldwide.
Rabbi Naphtali Burnstein

Why must we verbalize prayer? Since Hashem knows our innermost thoughts, why don’t we
just meditate? The answer to this question, is to recognize what characterizes us as humans
and distinguishes us from lower forms of life. Animals can think and feel, but only humans can
speak. As we stand before Hashem, we need to remember that we are human, and that as
humans, our goals and behavior should have the dignity of humanity. In addition, we wish to
remind ourselves that we are much more than Homo Sapiens, for we aspire to spiritual
achievement and goals.
