Cracks appear in
electoral alliance

CRACKS have started to
appear in a major Sunni
electoral alliance less than
two months before the
national polls.
Following a long meeting
on Thursday night, the six remaining member societies of
the National Alliance Coalition
(NAC) announced that they
would no longer be presenting
a united front at the municipal
council elections, and would
also field more than one candidate in certain areas for the
parliamentary elections.
A dispute over which can-

didate should represent which
constituency led to the decision, NAC spokesman and National Unity Assembly (NUA)
board member Abdulla Al Huwaihi told the GDN.
“We, as a coalition, will field
one candidate each in nine constituencies while in another six
we have conflicts,” he said.
“We have decided to go
ahead with two candidates in
these six constituencies, and
leave it to the voters to choose
between them.
“Debates over a remaining
constituency are ongoing – we
hope to finalise it soon.
“We also decided that member societies will have their
own candidates in the municipal council elections and we
will not be represented by the
coalition.”
The GDN reported last week
that Al Wasat Arab Islamic Society – formerly the seventh
member of the NAC – had
“temporarily” suspended its
membership, citing a lack of
focus as the reason for its withdrawal.
However, head of NAC and
NUA president Dr Shaikh Abdullatif Al Mahmood said that
a letter submitted by the society
had made no mention of any
reason for its decision.
“We have learnt that the delay in finalising the election
candidates led the society to
pull out,” he said, adding that
the delay was caused solely by
one of the member societies,
who took a long time to finalise
its candidate list.
