Proficiency Module Guidance P602 - Basic Design Principles of Local Exhaust Ventilation Systems Case Studies: Information for Tutors and Candidates Introduction To be awarded P602, candidates are required to pass a written theory examination and complete two case studies. This document provides further information about the case studies. Conditions for Starting the Case Studies Candidates are required to have passed the written theory examination prior to starting the case studies. The case studies and associated documents will be sent by BOHS to candidates who pass the written theory examination. The Two Case Studies – Design and Faults One case study is about the design of LEV systems. Candidates are required to apply a protocol for the selection of appropriate hood types to control hazardous substances on the basis of the data provided, and to derive system parameters leading to the specification of a fan for an LEV system. The case study will be referenced a CS(D-xx) where xx is the unique number of the case study. A second case study is about the identification of faults in LEV systems, on the basis of the data provided, and the recommendation of appropriate corrective measures for each fault. This case study will be referenced as CS(SF-xx) where xx is the unique number of the case study. Candidates are required to complete both case studies to a professional standard, as if the project was for a client. Authenticity Each candidate will be required to sign a declaration of authenticity, to confirm that they have completed each case study independently. Any evidence of collusion between candidates, or with any other person, will be investigated and may result in results being invalidated. Structure of the Case Studies Each case study has two parts. Content of the Case Studies The case studies will test the candidates in the following areas: Design of systems: - Reference CS(D-xx): Specification of LEV hood types for the effective capture and control of airborne hazardous substances from one or more processes. The protocol for hood selection will follow the procedure in Appendix 2 of HSG258 Controlling airborne contaminants at work (2nd edition, 2011). Use of data provided and calculation of system parameters to specify an appropriate fan for a branched LEV system. Fault identification and rectification: - Reference CS(SF-xx): Identification of faults apparent in an existing LEV system, based on information provided, including photographs or sketches. Formulation of recommendations to rectify each fault. P602 Case Studies: Information for Tutors and Candidates (010914) GJ.14 Start date: 1 September 2014 Page 1 of 2 Submission of the Case Studies Completed case studies must be submitted to BOHS for marking. The case studies should be emailed to Charlotte Collis, Qualifications Officer at: [email protected] Passing the Case Studies Candidates are required to pass both case studies, with an overall mark of 60% for each full case study plus a minimum of 50% for each part of each case study as follows: Design of Systems Overall pass mark - 60% Part 1 – minimum of 50% Part 2 – minimum of 50% Fault Identification and Rectification Overall pass mark – 60% Part 1 – minimum of 50% Part 2 - minimum of 50% Resubmissions Candidates who fail one or both case studies will receive a breakdown of marks from BOHS and will be permitted to amend and resubmit their answers. Candidates who fail a case study twice must retake a different case study on the same subject. Timescales Candidates must complete both case studies within 12 months of sitting the written theory examination. The 12 months starts from the first sitting of the written theory examination, whether candidates pass or fail.
