Clark was named the Blazers’ head coach on Jan. 22, 2014. s Clark took the helm of the UAB program after spending one year as the head coach at Jacksonville State. He led the Gamecocks to an 11-4 record, their most victories in 21 years, as JSU earned an at-large berth in the NCAA FCS playoffs and final national ranking of No. 10. GAMEDAY STORY LINES s UAB is in its 24th season of intercollegiate football and its 19th at the NCAA Division I level. s The Blazers are opening the season against Troy for the second straight year. The Trojans won by a 34-31 score in overtime last season at Troy after UAB took a 31-17 lead into the fourth quarter. s UAB is opening a season with a home game for the 11th time in its history. The Blazers last opened at home in 2012 and fell to Troy by a 39-29 margin. s When Saturday’s game kicks off at Legion Field, the Blazers and Trojans will be playing for the sixth consecutive season and for the 12th time overall. s The Blazers and Trojans have played close games in recent history. In the last four games (Troy has won three of those), two of the games have been decided by one point, another has gone to overtime (2013) and the 2012 contest that Troy won 39-29 was a two-point game in the fourth quarter before the Trojans scored a couple of quick touchdowns. s UAB wide receiver JJ Nelson, now a senior, had a breakout game against Troy last year in the season opener. The speedster from nearby Midfield finished the game with 10 receptions for 199 yards and two receiving touchdowns. He also had 367 all-purpose yards — a UAB single-game record — which included a 97-yard kickoff return for a score. s The Blazers had two players named to the All-Conference USA first team during the summer. Wide receiver JJ Nelson and punter Hunter Mullins were both tabbed to the first unit by the league’s coaches. Mullins, in addition, was named the C-USA Special Teams Player-of-the-Year. s The Blazers return eight starters on offense and eight on defense, as well as both their kicker and punter, from last season. s Keep an eye on UAB’s receivers in the game. The Blazers appear to be deep and talented at the position with JJ Nelson, Jamari Staples and Maudrecus Humphrey slated as starters. In addition to Nelson’s huge game against Troy last season, Staples made his collegiate debut against the Trojans and responded with a six catch/103-yard performance. s The Blazers’ sophomore running back Jordan Howard rushed for 881 yards last season as a true freshman as he split time with Darrin Reaves who left UAB a year early and signed with the Carolina Panthers. Howard’s rushing total was the second-best nationally among freshmen in 2013. s JJ Nelson has averaged 20 yards per reception on his 81 catches during his career. THE COACHES s Bill Clark (Jacksonville State, ‘90) is beginning his first season as the head coach at UAB. Clark came to UAB after spending one year at Jacksonville State where he led the Gamecocks to an 11-4 record and a berth in the NCAA FCS playoffs. JSU concluded the year ranked No. 10 in the final FCS poll and recorded its most wins since the 1992 season. s Larry Blakeney (Auburn, ’70) is entering his 24th season as the head coach at Troy. He has a record of 175-104 with the Trojans. Blakeney spent 14 years as an assistant coach at Auburn before becoming the head coach at Troy. He has helped Troy to five bowl appearances in the past 10 years. Please note that there are only two correct versions of our name, the acronym “UAB,” or the full “University of Alabama at Birmingham.” In addition, the Associated Press sports stylebook now uses UAB on first reference, not Alabama-Birmingham. We are not: Alabama-Birmingham, Ala.-Birmingham, or U.A.B. The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) has been an autonomous member of the University of Alabama system since 1969, and has had an intercollegiate athletic program since 1977. UAB is sometimes confused with the University of Alabama (Crimson Tide), which is located in Tuscaloosa; while this is inevitable, it is important to note that the two are indeed separate institutions. In addition, the UAB name is often altered by various media, opponents, merchandisers, etc. Postgame Interviews UAB has a closed locker room policy after each game. Clark has more than 20 years of experience, having spent a year as the head coach at Jacksonville State before coming to UAB. Prior to taking the helm of the Gamecocks’ program, Clark was assistant head coach and the defensive coordinator at South Alabama. Before joining the Jaguars’ staff, he was one of the most successful high school coaches in the State of Alabama. Clark led the Gamecocks to an 11-4 record last season, their most victories since the 1992 campaign when JSU won the NCAA Division II National Championship. That number set an Ohio Valley Conference record and is also the most wins by a first-year head coach. Jacksonville State earned an at-large berth in the FCS Playoffs and captured two victories -- including a second round win over No. 6 McNeese State -- to reach the quarterfinals. The wins were the Gamecocks’ first-ever in the NCAA Division I playoffs. Jacksonville State concluded the 2013 season ranked No. 10 in the final FCS poll. Clark became the Jacksonville State head coach after five outstanding seasons at South Alabama as the Jaguars’ defensive coordinator. Clark joined South Alabama in 2008 after spending nine years as head coach at Prattville (Ala.) High School where he led the Lions to national prominence. He won a pair of Class 6A State Championships as his last two teams won 30 straight games, while the 2007 squad was ranked No. 2 in the nation in USA Today’s national high school poll. Following his final season at Prattville High School, he was named the Alabama High School Athletic Association Coach of the Year and was also selected as the Schutt Southeast Regional Coach of the Year. He first led the Lions to the Class 6A state playoffs in 2000, his second season guiding the program. Clark earned his first postseason victory a year later, helping Prattville advance to the quarterfinals before falling to the eventual state champion, which is where the Lions’ season would end each of the next two falls. Clark served on the staff of the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic three times, including as head coach in the summer of 2007. He also served as head coach in the 2004 NorthSouth All-Star Game. Clark began his coaching career as an assistant at Piedmont High School (1990-91) and also has coaching stints at Tuscaloosa County High School (1992-94), Coffee County (Ga.) High School (1995-96) and Dothan High School (1997-98). He graduated from Jacksonville State in 1990 with a degree in physical education. Clark and his wife, Jennifer, have two children: daughter, Katie (19) and son Jacob (17). ALL-TIME SERIES RECORD VS.
