NewsLetter
From the Chair
Hi All,
Wishing you all a happy New Year and that you enjoyed the holidays with your
families.
I had a new learning experience with my first time at
purchasing something on Trade Me. It would appear that I
need supervision by a kid, I must have misunderstood how
the system works. Instead of one set of inks for my printer
(2 black and 1 each of the colours) at the price of $19.99
per set, I had thought that it was the price for one cartridge
(afterall I had paid $25 for just one cartridge, so thought it
was a bargain) but it appears that it was for a set. I ended
up with 5 sets, not realising that when clicking the "buy
now" it came up with the price for a set x 5. Paying for
rural delivery was not a problem, ordered on Monday and
it arrived Thursday to my surprise, but when all this ink arrived I thought I had better
check out exactly what I’d paid for, yes they were right I had purchased 5 sets. I now
have enough ink to last about three years!
I look forward to seeing you on the 16th of February.
Cheers
Dot

Course Co-ordinator’s Report January/February 2015
Members,
If you know the course you want then please phone the Tutor direct. Choose
a Tutor who is working on the day you are available.
Give me a call if you have queries we can chat and sort something, 439 4452.
Once more I am sitting at the computer thinking of our vision for SeniorNet, another year and yet another new lot
of technology to get our heads around. If you are feeling like “this is all too much I can’t be bothered stressing
myself anymore!” - well don’t give up come and sort it out together with likeminded people at SeniorNet. That
is what it is all about “seniors teaching seniors”.
Please remember we are all volunteers who wish to keep up with technology and see others succeed too. Learn
something new everyday, little steps keeping the brain active and enjoy the pleasure of success when it becomes
easy—but don’t stop there, keep learning and sharing your knowledge with others.
There is a slight increase in fees this year, your committee feels this is justified as so many of our classes are one
on one tuition. We advertise courses that are available but often it is that you have a couple of problems that you
personally are having and the teenagers are too busy to put you right! If it can’t be solved at the time our tutors
will ask others (including Google). When you are happy with your problems please consider sharing your
knowledge with others and joining our team of buddy tutors. Don’t forget to look at the back of this newsletter to
see what is on this month.
Cheers for now
Heather

Last year I wrote about Microsoft’s new Smartphone Nokia 830 and its camera technology.
I would like to revisit this as Smartphones and Cameras are becoming so part of our lives, and
it is a quandary to know what is the best buy and why. I am no expert so decided to ask Mr.
Google and see what others are saying about smartphone cameras.
Nokia 830—Samsung Galaxy S4 - Apple’s iPhone 5s or 6—which is the best?
What I did find out was that the cameras were all equal in quality and performance even if different technology!
I go to a phone sales person to buy my camera — there’s the problem, they can’t tell me anything about the
camera, other than to say how many pixels it has. Megapixels are an imperfect measurement of camera quality,
but most of these phones have very good rear cameras, just very little zoom so the ability to have plenty of
pixels to play with is what most of us would need so we can crop to bring subject closer.
There is still the question of this Pure View Technology with the camera lenses. A complicated explanation of
what it does, however I think we should have another read and be on the look out for more of this technology to
come on the market. Here is the article again simplified even more….
Pure View Technology summarised:
It's a new camera technology that has been under development for over 5 years…
…that shoves 41 actual megapixels in a phone camera…
…and uses "oversampling" to give you all the advantage of much larger pixels…
customers wanted a 3x zoom, but the problem was that optical zooms on a camera phone are near impossible
due to size. So the answer was a zoom that you could do purely digitally.
In simple language, that means that you can take a picture at a distance, then when you get time either at home
at your computer or directly on your camera, you crop it, the subject comes close and because of the PureView
technology your cropped picture will still have the pixels.
Any PureView-packing phone will supposedly be the "best possible camera phone" in its class. We should be
excited to see what PureView technology is going to bring to the Phone Camera market.

Interesting results of a recent AVG Survey
88% of those surveyed agree that technology has
improved their ability to communicate with family and
friends.
While only 27% of respondents say they find it easy to
keep up with or use the latest technology.
That explains the popularity of SeniorNet throughout
the country. Around 73% of people over 50 would
benefit by being a member and taking part in activities
at our Learning Centre.
Tell us what you need to know about, don’t feel nervous
or embarrassed about your problem because most likely
there are others out there struggling with the same thing.
We have 6 tutors available to listen and sort out your
needs.
Come to the Open Days each month to top up your
