Grading Format and Policies
Grades will be given throughout the semester on a numerical system totaling 1000 points. To earn a
successful grade in this course, you will be expected to fulfill the following requirements: daily
attendance (knowledge check) and active participation, submission of homework, and sufficient scores
on 18 Quizzes, 5 Lesson Exams, 2 Oral Exams, and Final Exam. Grades will be weighted as follows:

Attendance (knowledge check):
Attendance is taken daily. Except for the classes in which you take an exam, attendance will be taken
by a knowledge check (one question). The knowledge check will ask a basic question (one point)
from the reading assignment of the day. The purpose of the knowledge check is to preview the
grammar section to be taught in the subsequent class. If you come in after the knowledge check of
the day, it will count either a late or an absence and you will get no credit for the knowledge check. If
you are late and miss the knowledge check, you must see the instructor after the class on the
same day. Otherwise, you will be marked as absent. Also, if you come in after the first half of the
lesson, it will count an absence. Every three late will count one absence. Any late without an advance
notice (at least 24hours in advance) may not be excused. For absence beyond your third, your final
grade in this course will be lowered by 1%.
If you miss a class, you are responsible for making up the work you missed―you should find out what
you missed and borrow any necessary notes or handouts from a fellow student before the subsequent
class meeting.
Participation:
Active in-class participation is crucial. Also, cooperativeness is required in pair/group work. In addition,
you are expected to communicate with your classmates in Japanese as much as possible. Any inactive/
discouraging behavior may result in deduction of attendance points.
2
Homework:
Homework should be submitted on the desk in front of the class on each due date before class
starts. All the work to be submitted must be written in pencil with good use of eraser. Any work written
in pen will not be graded (=0point). No late homework will be accepted unless you can provide an
official document. Also, some points will be deducted from incomplete homework. If you happen to
know that you may be absent on any due dates, you may turn in the homework beforehand for full
credit.
Quizzes and Exams:
Quizzes and Exams must be written in pencil with good use of eraser. Any work written in pen will
not be graded(=0point). Quizzes and exams missed due to an emergency or under the direst
circumstances can be made up for 70% credit only if you can provide an official documentation. If you
happen to know that you may be missing one, you may take it beforehand for full credit. In case
you have to miss one without any documentation, no quizzes or exams can be made up.
Academic Dishonesty
All work you submit must be your own. You must not use any type of translator tool (it’s so obvious to a
native speaker when used!). All SIUC policies regarding academic dishonesty will be upheld in this
course, and all written materials submitted for grade may be checked for plagiarism. According to the
Student Conduct Code, plagiarism or academic dishonesty of any type may lead to zero points for a
particular assignment, failure of the course, and/or referral to Student Judicial Affairs for possible
dismissal from the university, regardless of standing. By submitting any work in this course, you
acknowledge that you are aware of the definitions and consequences of plagiarism and other forms of
academic dishonesty, and agree to be bound to them. If you are not familiar with these definitions and
consequences, refer to your Student Conduct Code Handbook, see an academic advisor, or ask your
instructor. Please don't put yourself and us in a horrible position by taking this risk―do your own work.
Emergency Procedures
Southern Illinois University Carbondale is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for
study and work. Because some health and safety circumstances are beyond our control, we ask that you
become familiar with the SIUC Emergency Response Plan and Building Emergency Response Team
(BERT) program. Emergency response information is available on posters in buildings on campus,
available on the BERT’s website at www.bert.siu.edu, Department of Public Safety’s website
www.dps.siu.edu (disaster drop down) and in the Emergency Response Guidelines pamphlet. Know how
to respond to each type of emergency.
Instructors will provide guidance and direction to students in the classroom in the event of an emergency
affecting your location. It is important that you follow these instructions and stay with your instructor
during an evacuation or sheltering emergency. The Building Emergency Response Team will provide
assistance to your instruction in evacuating the building or sheltering within the facility.
