Math Analysis
Welcome to a new school year at the brand new John Champe High School!
My philosophy on teaching follows a saying from Confucius: “Tell me and I’ll forget. Show
me and I’ll remember. Involve me and I’ll understand.” This year, get ready to be
involved in your learning, persevere through obstacles, and develop confidence in your
math abilities. I look forward to getting to know each of you throughout the year as we
explore mathematical concepts together and make new discoveries! Go Knights!

Office Hours
 Mornings 8:15am – 8:45am
 Afternoons until 4:30pm
 SHIELD – see me for a pass
 D Lunch
*Please let me know at least 1 day in advance if you plan on seeking help during
office hours so that I can ensure that I will be there (some days there may be
meetings or before/after school activities).
Recommended Supplies
 Paper (loose leaf in a binder or a notebook or both!)
o I suggest a binder to hold handouts but a notebook for homework,
notes, and class work
 Pencils and erasers
 Highlighters – 2 different colors
 Colored pencils
 Graph paper (a few pieces will do…)
 Calculator – TI-Inspire CX (provided in school for school use only)
 Textbook – please keep your textbook at home!!!
Please note that because this is an advanced level class preparing for AP Calculus, we will be
moving at an accelerated pace with less review of previous material. Some tests may be
timed and in the style of an AP exam in order to prepare students for that level of rigor.
Students will be responsible for studying consistently at home and seeking help when
needed (see office hours).
Topics Covered
Semester 1
 Matrices
 Functions – polynomial and rational
 Trigonometry
 Inverse Trigonometric Functions
 Applied Trigonometry
 Conic Sections
 Polar Graphing
 Vectors
Semester 2
 Parametric Equations
 Sequences and Series
 Mathematical Induction
 Limits (begin Calculus*)
 Differentiation
Grading Policy
The math department at John Champe High School aims to create a consistent
grading policy across all teachers and subjects. Please refer to the math department
page on the school website for more details and policies on late work and retakes.
Main Ideas:
 Grading will be done on a Total Point system.
 Homework – will be assessed by Daily HW Quizzes, which will consist of
a few questions from the homework two blocks prior to the date. For
example, homework is assigned Monday, you can ask questions about it
on Wednesday, and the Daily HW Quiz (no notes) will be on Friday.
 Class work – will mostly be for both teacher and student to see how
much students are understanding at the time, but will occasionally be
graded for accuracy
 Tests and Quizzes – There will be quizzes throughout a unit, and one
 test at the end of each unit.
 Problem Sets – These are problems related to what we are learning in
class mixed with some review problems, meant to help keep you
prepared for the SOL assessments. You will have at least 2 class periods
to complete each problem set. Problem sets will be given on top of
regular homework.
 Projects – There may be one project per quarter that requires students to
do research and work outside of the classroom.
Absences
If you are absent, you are responsible for getting the notes from a classmate, the
teacher, or online on VISION. There is a folder in the back of the classroom for your
class that will hold any work you missed. You will have as many days as you were
absent to make up missing work. You will need to make up the Daily HW Quiz from
the day you were absent but will be excused from the quiz that contains material
you missed.
