Society for Industrial and
Applied Mathematics
(SIAM)
An overview of SIAM
 SIAM is an international community of over 13,000
individual members. Over 500 academic,
manufacturing, research and development, service
and consulting organizations, government, and
military organizations worldwide are institutional
members
An overview of SIAM…
 Founded in 1952, SIAM’s mission is
 To advance the application of mathematics and
computational science to engineering, industry, science,
and society
 To promote research that will lead to effective new
mathematical and computational methods and
techniques for science, engineering, industry, and
society
 To provide media for the exchange of information and
ideas among mathematicians, engineers, and scientists
What is applied math and computational
science?
 Applied mathematicians use mathematical tools
to solve concrete problems in science, business and
other areas
 Computational science studies methods for
solving math problems that are too large for
human capacity – they are in principle handled by
computers
 SIAM publishes 15 journals for the applied math
and computational science communities. Our 16th
journal will launch in 1Q 2013
 They are highly ranked in terms of impact factor:
 Seven are ranked in the top 30 of 245 journals in
the Mathematics, Applied category - including
#1 (SIAM Review) and #2 (SIAM Journal on
Imaging Sciences)
 Over 6o% of our authors live outside the U.S.
 SIAM has an e-book collection of ~400 titles.
Customers may purchase perpetual access or
subscribe to the collection
 E-books are viewable in PDF format by chapter
 There is no limit to the number of concurrent
users
 There is no digital rights management (DRM).
Users may download or print as needed
 MARC records provided
