Central Vic AFCA Newsletter July 2014

AFL Central Victoria AFCA Welcome
Welcome members to our second edition of the AFCA Regional Newsletter. Since the
start of the football season, I have witnessed some great coaching by many of our
Central Victorian AFCA group right across the region.
Some of these coaches have been awarded with a ‘Bicknell’s Coach of the Month
Award’. If you have any nominations, please contact me on the below details.
As you may notice, we have a new AFCA logo, many thanks to Joey Whiting.
In coach education, we have seen one hundred and thirty new coaches attend level one coaching
accreditation courses in Bendigo. This is a great result for our region and well up on previous years. The
course has undergone some changes and certainly is a great first insight into coaching for any new
member into our group. Coaching education, particularly on-going education, is extremely important if
you want to offer your players, club and parents the best possible coaching, which should be every
coaches’ goal!
Our next educational opportunity will involve a trip to North Melbourne on the 9th of July. We have also
been able to secure some AFL assistant coaches who will visit Bendigo in late July – early August. More
information will be sent out in due course.
The Sub-Committee has been busy over the last two months particularly. They have some great
initiatives and plans to announce before the end of the year.
I urge all coaches to keep in touch with myself and the sub-committee. Please take any coaching
education opportunities over the next few months. It’s well worth it!

Strathfieldsaye Football Club 2011- current.
 Coaching is a big commitment and I congratulate everyone who takes on the challenge of being a
head coach. Senior coaching is now a business in many ways and it presents more challenges than
just coaching players. It can also include game day coaching, recruiting, training, management of
assistant coaches & staff, sponsors, media, player management, junior assistance, school programs
etc. A hard gig for anyone who works full time. So I believe the key critical ingredient to being
somewhat successful as a senior coach is getting people in and around you to help and support you.
 Junior coaching is much the same but without the money and the need to win as much as in senior
games.
 My own view is that if you are a win at all costs, then junior coaching is not for you. The role is for
player development, and engaging the players to love the game of AFL football.
 The measurement of success as a junior coach is not determined by the total amount of
premierships at junior level that are coached. The gauge for me is simple, if a player you coach one
season signs to play the following season then you have been a successful coach. All the best in your
quest as a coach.

Vicki Poyser – Female Football
 After finishing a hockey coaching career spanning 25 years at state, national
and professionally for some time on the international arena, I have continued
to maintain my passion and involvement with high performance programs
locally and nationally.
 Locally as a Board member of the Bendigo Bank Academy of Sport where I
hold the portfolio of Programs Committee. Nationally as a Hockey Australia
National Youth selector and emerging athlete programs.
 My connection with Australian Rules football in Central Victoria has centred
around past involvement with the BJFL Development Committee, acting as a
manager of BJFL interleague teams and my current employment as Director
of Sport at Bendigo Senior Secondary College.
 I believe the greatest asset of a coach is the ability to understand the diversity
of their athletes, their "gifts" and skills. Programs should be athlete centred
and coach driven to motivate the athlete so they are developing to their full potential and bringing
their "gifts" consistently to their performance.
 The journey of a coach and athlete to succeed requires not only hard work out of their comfort
zone, but learning to be resilient, showing passion for the sport and above all being humble.
AFCA Coach of the Month Awards
Welcome to our new sponsor – David Bicknell ‘Bicknell’s Independent Sports’

nominations. If you know of and have seen some great coaching by our regional coaches please
nominate them. http://www.aflcentralvic.com.au/AFCA/AFCA-Forms
April Coach of the Month – Andrew Wild
Andrew Wild – Youth Boys
Club: Calivil United Under 17s
Coaching History last 5 year or more: U 17 2013 (Runners Up) & 2014. Loddon
Valley League U 17 coach 2013 & 2014.
Andrew demonstrates all the attributes looked for in a quality coach for junior
footballers. His ability to communicate well with youth boys is exceptional,
focusing on encouraging players to be the best they can. At all times, he
demonstrates a calm demeanour and clearly articulates his message before,
during and after games in a positive manner. He is popular and respected by
his players.
Being prepared to go beyond his duties as coach, he provides transport for players to training each
week and contributes to other aspects of the Calivil United FNC operations. Andrew has created a
positive environment for the players and their families. He provides the appropriate skill development
for the age group and importantly encourages them to have a go. In 2013 he was appointed Loddon
Valley FNL under 17 Interleague coach and was reappointed for 2014. He has impressed all with his
ability to bring the group together enabling them to gel as a team and allows them to showcase their
talent.
May Male Coach of the Month – Alistair Egan
Alistair Egan – St Arnaud: North Central /Mallee - Under 12,14,16,18, U/15 V-Line
Alistair is a very experienced coach and has had senior premiership
success while in the position of playing coach. After his playing career
ended he has shifted his focus to junior sport with football and cricket
high on his list. In this time he has assisted junior coaches at St Arnaud
and passed on his vast knowledge to them and the players.
2013 saw him take on the job of the North Central Junior Development
Coach, where he has shown real passion and dedication to the task.
2014 and he is really making his mark with the N-C/Mallee U/15 V-Line
side putting in its best performance for many years. Success against Bendigo 2 and South West and a 1
point loss to Goulburn Murray 2 was an outstanding result for players and coach.
Alistair is very positive with the players and his hell bent on keeping them in the game and seeing
continued improvement throughout their careers. He has the respect from both parents and players
alike throughout the North Central and Mallee and is very deserving of this award.
May Female Coach of the Month – Andrea Coughlan
Andrea Coughlan (Andie)
Club: Catholic College Bendigo – Team/s age group/s: School Sport Victoria - Junior Girls Football
Coaching History last 5 years or more: A couple of years coaching CCB Junior Girls Football Team, as
well as Junior Girls Basketball.
Andie is a good communicator and constantly affirms the efforts of the girls. She is very encouraging,
regardless of a player’s ability. Andie has previously played for the Bendigo Thunder, and therefore has
credibility in the eyes of her players. This enables her to have a good concept of what it takes to inspire
and teach the girls in this somewhat unfamiliar sporting environment.
She is a good and clear instructor and has been prepared to bring in people from the outside, such as
Bendigo Thunder captain Emma Wolters and previously AFL Youth Ambassador, Emma Grant to run
special training sessions to further develop each player’s skills and knowledge of the game. She is
willing to listen to player ideas, and work with them in implementing these into games. Her role as a
secondary school teacher has enabled her to re-affirm not only the necessity for teamwork, but instil
the importance of work ethic and sportsmanship. All of these values are vital both in the classroom and
in the sporting environment.
Andie has always been prepared to go out of her way to make sure that no matter what she is involved
in within the College that it is done with the upmost professionalism and genuine regard for those
involved, and I am sure that the Girls Football would be by far her favourite extra-curricular activity.
BJFL Bendigo Development Squads Reports
U13s Coach: Craig Simpson
The Bendigo under 13 development squad acquitted themselves very well over the 6 week period of
the program. This culminated with a very strong 12 goal win against Ballarat at Strathfieldsaye. A strong
feature of the boys play was their willingness to play as a team and their general ball use. Their ability
to spread and use the best option was a significant reason for their overall success.
Best players over the program included Luke Padgham, James Schischka, Harry Burke, Lachlan Baker,
Mitch Rovers and Aaron Gundry. Many thanks to Nathan Power for being the Team Manager and to the
many parents who helped out along the way.
U14s – Coach: Bruce Wallace
Assistant Coach - Cam Davie and Team Manager - Mark Walters
The Under 14’s Development Squad was formulated by club coaches nominating their best players of
whom they think could best represent their club at a higher level of football. There were initially over
60 names put forward. I watched some early games and had a number of other coaches and assistants
do the same which enabled us to do our first cut before our first training session. We had 44 boys on
our list for the Moama carnival and left 19 back in Bendigo (including some early injuries).
Our Moama team tried hard in each of our 3 games and improved as the day progressed. We continued
to train at Wade Street on Wednesday nights and learn some of our basic team rules and style of play
we wanted the boys to play. We had another cut here back to our final squad of 24 plus 2 emergencies.
Our Shepparton game at Maroopna was a very wet and physical affair of which our boys acquitted
themselves as well as could have been expected, but we were all disappointed and were determined to
turn it around next game.
The big one arrived on the 14th of June at Strathfieldsaye against Ballarat. We had prepared well and all
players were available, 22 and 4 emergencies. Ballarat jumped us in the first 10 minutes of the first
quarter but by quarter time the momentum had swung back to us due to some tough and aggressive
football. For the rest of the game we had full control with Ballarat only kicking 1 more goal. All of our
boys had some sort of impact on the game and played a very good brand of footy.
Our better Players were Jye Caldwell, Coen Cooper, Daniel Clohesy, Callum McCarty, Lachlan Johnson
and Brody Fry.
