MIN KIM (Prof.)
MIN KIM, the Violinist and Music Director of the
Korean Chamber Orchestra. He is one of the leading
concert violinists of South Korea and highly
respected for his versatility as a soloist, chamber
musician, educator and concert master.
He was graduated from the Seoul National
University. Later, he went to Germany as a student
on a DAAD scholarship in 1969 at the Staatlische
Hochschule für Musik in Hamburg under the
guidance of W.Hanke and T.Brandis.
He received prizes in many national violin
competitions and has performed with orchestras
such as: N.D.R Orchestra in Hamburg, Berlin Radio
Symphony Orchestra, Köln Chamber Orchestra and
many others.
In 1979, he returned to Korea and was a concert master of the Korean Philharmonic
Orchestra and the KBS Symphony Orchestra. Also, he took over the leadership of
the Korean Chamber Orchestra and was appointed to the faculty at Seoul National
University as Professor of Violin. Min Kim, lead the KCO on many, highly successful
international tours. In his capacity as the music director and concertmaster, has built
the Korean Chamber Orchestra into one of the most successful musical groups in
South Korea.
Among the recent highlights are the 1995 U.S.-Canada tour. In 1999 the European
tours and debut concert in Salzburg, the UNESCO Peace Concert in Paris. During
2000-2009, they participated on a premiere concert as a Korean music group in the
Berlin Philharmonic Chamber Hall, Naantali Festival(Finland), Rheingau
Festival(Germany), Beethoven Festival(Poland), Mozart Festival(Estonia), Speyer
Festival(Germany), etc. Until 2011, KCO is engaged to several famous festivals in
Europe.
He was a guest-professor of Hong Kong Academy and has been a member of the
jury in such internationally famous competitions as Wieniawski competition,
Tchaikovsky competition, Sendai competition in Japan, Leopold Mozart competition
in Germany, Markneukirchen competition in Germany, China international
competition in Qingdao, etc. In 2009, he is invited to Queen Elizabeth Competition in
Brussel, Wieniawski Competition for young violinists. Also His students have won
prizes in numerous major international competitions over the world.
He served as a dean of faculty for 6 years (2000-2006) in the college of Music at
Seoul National University. Currently, he is a professor emeritus of Seoul National
University and director of the Korean Chamber Orchestra and Seoul Isng Yun
ensemble.
