IBEW LU 379 First Department Store in 30 Years
Charlotte Premium
Outlets 2013-2014 has seen
the first outlet/mall wired by the
IBEW in over 30 years. Not since
Eastland Mall or South Park Mall
has Local 379 been involved in the
construction of the
core of a outlet or
mall and thanks to
the boldness of
Preferred Electric
to take on this
project and the
knowledge of
IBEW members
this job was a
great success for
all. The picture to
the right is just but
a fraction of the
men and women
who made this
project a success,
at peek there were
over 100 IBEW
members working
on this project.
The Premium Outlet store’s are
located at 485 and HWY 160, so if
you need to shop, this would be a
great place since it was wired Union.
Outlets. Again showing that with
qualified manpower and contractors who want to take on this work
there’s nothing this local can’t do
together.

Business Manager Tommy Hill
Brothers and Sisters of Local 379
I hope as I write this letter that all of our members are doing well. This is the first opportunity as your new Business Manager that I have
had to thank you for your continued support as I work to serve this local union. I am proud to have the opportunity to serve this local union
in the capacity of Business Manager and pledge to serve the interest of this local union to the best of my ability.
There are few things on my mind that I would like to share with you. So let’s begin with the JATC. We hired a new training director and I
want to say that she is doing a great job and we are only beginning to see what a great addition to the IBEW-NECA team she is. She has
been working very hard getting everything in place so we can start the first year class. If you haven’t come by I would encourage you to
come by and meet Mrs. Williams and see what we have done with the JATC. We have a new first year class that started this week, and because of the demand for well educated, highly skilled Journeyman Wireman we are going to have a second first year class the first of the
year that will run parallel with the one that started this week. So if you know someone that is interested in the apprenticeship have them
contact Tina Williams at (704)523-7001.
The work outlook is good, the work in Lenoir continues keep our brothers and sisters employed and for that we are thankful. Inglett-Stubbs
picked up buildings 4 and 5. We have already been putting people on that jobsite, but the bulk of the hiring will begin in October and will
peak at around February. Estimated manpower needs between 300 and 400 electrical workers.
About six months ago South Fair started work at the VA hospital in Salisbury NC doing some repair work at that facility to repair some work
another electrical contractor had started but did such terrible work, that South Fair was called in to straighten that mess out. Our guys on
that job have done such a good job that South Fair has been awarded a sizable project that we will be putting about 20 IBEW members on
it. I have also been told that BESCO has also been awarded a project at this same VA facility. So we have gone from no union contractors at
that facility to two signatory contractors on that site.
We have put some men to work with Balfour Beatty the Rail division on the Trolley line and I will say that they are doing a great job for us
and I am sure that this will lead to other work.
Balfour has the contract for the Blue Line Extension but BESCO, and BB&H have been awarded a good portion of that work, but the bulk of
that work has been awarded to Modern Railway System and we are working diligently at securing that work for the local union.
A lot of our members were a part of the Tanger Outlet mall project. I want to say that this project was huge success and I want to thank all
of our members who worked so hard and made that job the success that it was. I was told that the customer said that this job was one of
the best electrical installations that they had experienced. It is this type of skill, good work ethic, and dedication that leads to more jobs in
the future so keep up the good work so we can all stay gainfully employed. I am proud of everyone who made that job a success.
Rosendin did a small building in Maiden and I was told by management that our guys did a good job for them and that they were chasing
more work in our area. So I think that you will be hearing more calls on the job line soon for Rosendin.
All of this good information comes from our members doing what is spelled out in the Code of Excellence. We can talk about how great we
are and it doesn’t mean a thing unless we go out a make it happen. In all of the examples above, we as a local union and as individual
members done what is spelled out in the Code of Excellence. So let’s continue to make the Code of Excellence a part of who we are as a
local union and as individual union member.
We have a lot of work coming our way and which can lead to more work if we go about doing our work in a way that satisfies the needs of
our customers so they will ask for the IBEW LU 379. Let’s convince our customers that the IBEW LU 379 is the right choice.
Sincerely yours
Tommy Hill

Please make plans to attend the Labor Day Parade (Monday) September 1st . The parade starts at 11 AM but staging begins at 9AM at the Hall Marshall (Meck Inspection Building) parking lot. Last year the IBEW Local Union 379
had the most for one Union at about 70, and this year we are shooting for 100+. If you have never been to a Labor
Day Parade this is the year for you, and if you’ve been please join us again.
Our float will be in the Parade if any one needs to ride instead of walk. If
you have a golf cart, motor cycle or bike you would like to ride please
feel free to bring it out. To the right is a picture of last year’s turn out
for the parade and we want to double our numbers, so be a part of Labor and the history of labor by attending this year’s parade.

New Satellite Office in Hickory….
Due to the upcoming manpower projections from our signatory contractors
working in the Lenoir, NC area and our
ever expanding new membership base,
Local Union 379 Business Manager Tommy Hill and the Executive Board have decided that it was time to expand the convenience of our services to include the
North Western section of the jurisdiction.
We would like to take this time to formally announce the opening of the new
IBEW Local Union 379 Satellite Office. The
facility is located at 901 US Highway 321
Hickory, NC 28601. The office is in a prime
location, positioned (1) storefront down
from the NC Department of Motor Vehicles (License Plate Agency). With over a hundred (DMV) patrons passing by daily, we are already generating quite the buzz in the local community.
The new location is intended to better serve our existing membership living in the area and
to act as a hub for our ongoing organizing efforts in this previously uncultivated section of
the jurisdiction. This new space will be a fully functional facility offering many of the services
provide by the main office, with the convenience of being located in an area of the state that
is predicted to host the next boom in construction.
Since opening in July, we have already recruited (4) new members
into our ranks and processed over
(80) new applicants; all of who are
eager to work for an IBEW Signatory Contractor and want to experience what Brotherhood is all
about. Please join us in celebrating the passing of this new
milestone and help us spread the
word.

President Scott Thrower
Brothers and Sisters,
2014 brings new challenges for all of us and the mid term elections are fast approaching. It has never been
more important for each and every one of us to make our voices heard this year. If you have been unemployed in the past year then you have seen what Raleigh can do if left unchecked and there have been a lot
of changes to the voting procedure. For example if your not registered to vote you must register by October 10th and this is just but one of the many change that will affect you in NC. Be sure to visit the
www.ncsbe.gov/ncsbe/ for all the information you will need for voting in NC, and www.scvotes.org for SC.
The AFL-CIO and your local Southern Piedmont CLC have spent a lot of time interviewing candidates who
support labor and working people. In the coming weeks I will be sending you information on who these
candidates are for your information. These recommendations are for those members who want to know
who supports the Union and Working men and women. As Union members our most powerful tool is our
voice and unity and it is my wish that each member and their families vote in this years election.
