Ask yourself this question: Do I have the skills to be a leader? Please don’t confuse the term leader/leadership with manager/managing or supervisor/supervising. Individuals may be described as a manager or supervisor; however, that doesn’t mean they are leaders. True leadership comes from interpersonal communications, understanding learning styles and respect for the strengths of each individual employee. We are going to collaboratively investigate Ken Blanchard and Dr. Paul Hershey’s vision of Situational Leadership and apply the theory to our own personalities. February Brand Yourself: Utilizing Social Media Thursday, February 5th • 12:30-1:30pm • T219 Jamie Edwards Are you on Facebook? Twitter? Instagram? Pinterest? LinkedIn? So are employers. Branding yourself is all about making your online presence show your personality but also your professional interests. We’ll discuss many of the popular social media channels and how to use them to make the best impression to an employer. BaFa’ BaFa’ Thursday, February 12th • 12:30-1:30pm • T119A/B Mary-Clare Stokes This highly interactive session will help participants experience issues of diversity and communication through acting out the social expectations of two fictional cultures. As the two “cultures” interact to exchange tokens, they will discover that their values, traditions, and communication styles are very different. This exercise was invented by Dr. R. Garry Shirts and has been used at colleges and universities across the country to educate students on culture shock and communication. Leadership in the Workplace and Communication Skills Thursday, February 19th • 12:30-1:30 • T219 Dan Fletcher Good communication, diplomacy and knowing when to use force and at what level is paramount for a functioning workplace environment. Whether you are serving in the military or the civilian world, one must always strive to strike a balance between extremes: overbearing, bullying or “toxic” leaders and “pillow leaders” whose obsession with “just getting along” lets the former get out of control and demolish the team. In this workshop the speaker will strive to address these topics though nearly 30 years of leadership training and experience working for or with countless supervisors. Accountability to Achievement Thursday, February 26th • 12:30-1:45pm • T219 Cody Rapp This is an opportunity for students to put aside class, work and social drama and reflect on themselves and how they can be successful. This highly individualized workshop will act as a gateway to student success by introducing a variety of organizational tools and a specific plan for setting a goal and moving toward achieving it. March Increase Your Leadership Potential by Learning the Science of Persuasion Thursday, March 5th • 12:30-2pm • T219 Charles Scruggs Leadership can be defined as the process of getting people to do what they might otherwise not do. This process is fundamentally about persuasion. While we tend to think of persuasive people as charismatic individuals blessed with a mysterious gift, considerable empirical evidence suggests that persuasion is a science with key principles that can be identified and learned. Drawing heavily on the work of the renowned social psychologist Robert Cialdini, this workshop will introduce participants to the science of persuasion with an eye to increasing their leadership potential in a variety of settings and arming them against the onslaught of “persuasion professionals.” Trevor Project Lifeguard Training Thursday, March 19th • 12:30-1:30pm • T219 Samantha Golden As nationally-recognized best practice for suicide prevention, this interactive training is presented to develop skills to identify and assist individuals who may be struggling with depression and potentially prevent suicide. Although this is typically geared toward LGBTQ youth, it provides tools for anyone to advocate for those who may be contemplating suicide and identifies resources available through the Trevor Project that are available 24 hours a day, in multiple formats (text, IM, online forums, telephone).
