Newsletter #26

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL:
Kia ora tatou katoa, Konnichiwa, Kemche!
Greetings to you all!
Next Monday sees the official ‘beginning’ of Spring where is the year going to!?
C.O.P.S. CROSS-COUNTRY
Yesterday the C.O.P.S Cross-Country was held at
Waitomo. The conditions were perfect - just as they had
been for our school cross-country last week.
Kio Kio School had 48 runners participate in the event.
Emma Telfer and James White were impressed by the
determination of all Kio Kio participants, as the course is
a challenging one. The ‘can do’ attitude and striving to
meet personal goals paid off for you all.
Five of our runners won their races - congratulations
Chloe Usher, Cooper Phillips, Brianna Waldron, Rick
Dykshoorn and Caitlyn Morrison.
Many of our other runners finished in the top 10 for
their races. Well done, Kio Kio School! We will publish
final details once we have them.
Thank you to parents/grandparents who transported
and supported our students. It was also great to have a
large number of Kio Kio supporters stay until the end of
the races. Your presence was noted and appreciated.
MINIBALL
Miniball teams began playing this week at Waitomo
Stadium in Te Kuiti. Our Miniball participation has
increased and we now have 5 teams in the competition.
This is impressive! Thanks to Kevin Jones for organising
the teams.
AGRICULTURAL DAY
This year the Kio Kio School Agricultural Day will be held
on Tuesday 21 October. Thank you to Adele Phillips
for coordinating the set-up for this event.
Teachers held their first Ag Day meetings with students
today. All students are expected to participate and are
encouraged to have a pet of some kind, if possible.
Those who are not participating with a pet will take part
in the plant/flower section of the day. Watch out for Ag
Day updates over the coming weeks.
UPCOMING EVENTS
Next week we have two events that involve students.
These are both on Wednesday 3 September.
Maggi Kitchen:
The ‘Hibity Gibity’ Maggi Kitchen Showdown team George Butcher, Caitlyn Morrison, Phoenix Hughes and
Bennett Sanson are off to Auckland to compete in the
regional finals. Their chicken with bacon on a bed of
lemon and tomato couscous is certainly a delicious
meal! Go well, Hibity Gibitys.
Dance Demo:
Carmen Brightwell (ex-Kio Kio School student and
dancer with Imperious Dance Company) is performing at
Kio Kio School. This is a voluntary event for our
students to attend - they just need to bring a gold coin
donation. Carmen is raising funds to travel overseas
and tutor in dancing. She will also run a mini dance
workshop after the performance.
TOYS & PHONES REMINDER
It is timely to remind all students and families that we
discourage students from bringing toys and phones to
school. We are unable to take responsibility for these
items if they get lost. They are best left at home. If
your child has a special toy he or she would like to show
their class, a photo is a great alternative.
If your child (older students only) absolutely needs to
have a phone at school for after school commitments, it
must be through a note signed by a parent and the
phone needs to be kept at the office and collected after
school. Anyone using a phone during the school day will
be asked to take the phone to the office and it will need
to be collected by a parent.
BYOD (bring your own devices) is allowed in Rooms 5, 6
and 7, provided it is with your permission (verbally or
with a signed note) and at your risk. We do NOT expect
students to have their own ipods, ipads or laptops, but
some students do have these and do bring them to
school. These, like our school devices, are expressly to
be used for educational purposes. They are not to be
used during breaks, except with teacher permission. As
a school we have 26 student laptops, 17 ipad minis and
a number of desktop PCs - thanks to our Supporters’
Committee fundraising and funding from the BOT.

HEALTH OF STUDENTS
BOT NEWS
We have had a few students away sick recently. One
parent of a junior student informed us today that her
child has been diagnosed with Rotavirus.
This ‘ERO’ snippet is focused on Governance:
The Board of Trustees …
 has a good range of skills and experiences
 has undertaken significant Board training, along
with the Principal
 is considering co-opting extra expertise to enable
Maori representation to support the school
 is aware of their governance role
 is currently reviewing policies and the governance
manual
 is funding additional staffing to cater for roll growth
and the needs of students
 is in a sound financial position
 and the school have a commitment to bi-culturalism
 chairperson is knowledgeable and experienced
Rotavirus is a highly infectious virus of the gut. It
can range from a short period of mild, watery
diarrhoea to severe, dehydrating diarrhoea with
vomiting, fever and shock.
If you think your child has Rotavirus, this can only be
confirmed by laboratory testing.
How it is spread
The virus is spread by contact with the faeces of an
infected person. This can happen if people don’t wash
their hands properly after going to the toilet or
changing nappies.

AIMS GAMES
Thank you to CT Engineering, VE Vets, Timi’s Aerial
Services, Bulk Lines, Heli A1, Borrowdale Trust (David
Strawbridge), McKenzie Strawbridge, Bailey Ingham,
John Clark Contracting, KD Electrical and Sherie’s Hair
Studio who have donated funds towards our trip to
Tauranga to participate in these games. Thank you also
to Prescott Holden who will sponsor our trip by ‘donating’
the use of a van for transport and to Deb & Steve
Wilshier for providing accommodation.
Emma Telfer, Teacher in Charge of Team
If your child has rotavirus, the symptoms are:
sudden onset of vomiting and watery diarrhoea which
can last from 3–8 days
fever
abdominal pain
Rotavirus can lead to severe dehydration that can be
fatal if not treated.
Adults can catch rotavirus, but most will have no
symptoms.
Stop Rotavirus spreading
Careful hand-washing is important to stop the spread
of Rotavirus. Be aware that the virus can survive
outside the body, so that hard surfaces, toys,
utensils and other objects can become contaminated.
If your child has Rotavirus they should be kept home
from school or early childhood services until they are
well with no further diarrhoea or vomiting. This will
help prevent the spread of Rotavirus in our
community.
Invoices for outstanding fees will be
sent home tomorrow.

CALF DONATION
It’s that time of the year again when the Supporters’
Committee has been asking families to rear a calf to
donate to the school. I have already had a number of
calves offered for donation so a big thank you to all
those families.
If I haven’t yet spoken to you and you have a calf to
donate to the school then that is great!
If I have missed contacting you, then we want calves
such as Friesian or Jersey bulls or beef cross calves.
All calves must be NAIT tagged.
Collection of the calves for sale is from late October to
mid-November (when they are ready to be weaned).
If you have any questions of would like to donate a calf
please contact me
