SU Team Photo-shoot
Following the tradition of earlier teams, SU team
January 2014 had their official photo session for this
semester. The photos shoot was organised by SU
Media team with the co-ordination of Media and
Communication Unit (MCU) of AIT.

Friendly Football Match (AIT vs.
Jinkoping University, Sweden)
Swedish Day was celebrated in AIT on 5th March 2014. A
group of 15 students and officials from Jinkoping
University Sweden (JTH), visited AIT. SU Sports
Committee organised a friendly football match between
AIT and JTH teams. JTH team win the match with 3-1. SU
President Salman Ali Suhail distributed the trophies and
medal to winning team and certificates to AIT team.
After Football match, the Swedish students organised an
open-air competition with AIT students where they ask
different questions to random students and give them prizes. At the end of the day, Swedish team serve
everyone with Swedish food, which they had brought all the way from Sweden for AIT Students.
SPSS Workshop
The SU academic team (Mr. Zia-Chairperson and Ms. LwinSecretary) conducted 3rd workshop in a row on 15th-16th
March, named as SPSS workshop. SPSS Statistics is the Software
Package used for Social Sciences Analysis. It is being widely used
in social sciences research and has numerous applications.
Dr.G.V.R.K. Acharyulu , a visiting Faculty as an Associate
Professor in SET, delivered theoretical and problem solving
lectures on SPSS software. He thoroughly explained about the
pros and cons and cut off criteria for methodology selection and
acceptance of threshold values with respect to various statistical techniques. Prof. Acharyulu responded to many student queries
related to SPSS software. Students were enthusiastic to bring these techniques into their practice for data analysis. More than 100
doctoral, masters and undergraduate students, attended it. The two-day workshop concluded with a group photo and lots of
appreciation from students to the professor.

Cultural Show
We, in AIT, are very delighted and proud to have possibly the largest
number of international communities. The Culture Show is a unique
event in the SU calendar where you can experience the myriad of
cultural possibilities that AIT has to offer being an international
institute. With its unique and colourful combination of exquisite
cultures and forms of entertainment such as traditional music
performances and classical dances, SU Cultural Show is always the
best place to enjoy a rare panorama of cultural diversity in AIT.
The Cultural Show of January 2014 Semester was themed as “Pieces
of the Puzzle”. It featured modern arts and cultural performances
on an enormous stage with over 100 performers from 13 different countries, draped in their traditional dresses. The
stimulating display of arts & cultural heritage was indeed a treat to eyes.
The Cultural show was graced Dr. Donyaprueth Krairit, Dean of the AIT School of Management, as a chief guest.
Indian students stole the show and grabbed the first prizes in category of Ms. AIT, Talents show, Judges Choice Award
and Solo singing. Sri Lankan students achieved second highest number of awards in show. Myanmar won the first
prize for Competitive dance.
It goes without saying, that despite some technical difficulties, the show marked its end well.

International Film Festival
The International Film Festival took its start on 22 March 2014. The first week of International Film Festival
included three movies first one a Thai Horror Movie Pee Mak, followed by a Sri Lankan Movie “Machan” and a
Pakistani Movie “Ramchand Pakistani”. The movies were all screened in the original languages with English
subtitles. The shows offer raffle draws for participants as well, which has exciting gifts.
In the second week of International Film Festival, there were three more movies starting with a youthful
Cambodian movie “Kamong Kampot” followed by Bangladeshi Movie “Hazar Bochhor Dhor” (Symphony of
Agony).
Mini Olympics
Mini Olympics, the most thrilling series of events, set off on 25th March 2014 with the matches of athletics,
carom and snooker on first day. There will be a 3-week long series of different games having participants from
all AIT communities. The games will be played on country bases. The event will come to an end in 2nd week of
April. The details of winners will be included in next edition of newsletter.

Gaming Tournament
On 29th March, SU Media Team organised a Gaming Tournament for computer game lovers. The players
compete for two games, Need for Speed (A car racing game) and Call of Duty (Fighting Game). Need for speed
had individual matches while Call of duty had team matches. 12 players compete for Need for speed and there
were four teams who participated in Call of Duty matches, each team including 6 players. After the 10 hour long
event including several matches and tough competition, here are the name of those who was declared as
winners.
Chamidu Jayathilaka grabbed the first prize in Need for speed game and got a prize of 1500 baht. In Call of Duty,
the team of Janitha Yasasvi, Savindha Herath, Dakshitha Withanage, Sabeethan Kangasingham, Tharindu
Lakshan, Randula Hettiarachi won the final and got prize money of worth 3600 baht.
Second GA Meeting
The 2nd General Assembly (GA) Meeting for the January 2014 Semester held on 9, March 2014 at Korea House
from 7:00 PM to 12:00 PM. Out of total 33 members, 21 GA members from country associations and field of
studies attended the meeting. The 2nd GA meeting was conducted as per the following agenda, The SU
President, Mr. Salman Ali Suhail, welcomed GA members, reviewed the meeting minutes of 1st GA meeting and
updated the GA members regarding activities done by SU Team till now. After his speech, the Election
Commissioner, Mr. Salman Ahmad Khan presented the report from Election Commission relating with the
election of SU Vice President January 2014 Semester.
Moving on in the meeting, GA selected Mr Mohammad Ali Haider as the General Secretary of SU for August
2014 Semester. After that news elected members for August 2014 Semester took the oath and newly elected
SU Vice President gave his remarks.
After dinner, GA approved amendments in SU constitution, which were proposed in 1st GA meeting. Also GA
approved proposal of SU beverages and new vendors in SU area. Later on, the representative students raised
their issues and discussed with SU President.

AIT Teams bring home two awards in “Go Green in
City” Competition
Four teams from AIT Reached the Top 5 Round in “Go Green in the City Competition” organized
by Schneider Electric Global Company on 21st March at Bangkok. The leading energy
management company Schneider Electric challenged participants with the lofty task of
developing an idea for intelligent and efficient energy management for smarter cities. All teams
were evaluated on the same criteria; the most important selection criteria were innovativeness
of the idea relating to sustainable initiatives to reduce energy consumption and its business fit
with Schneider Electric’s mission.
The AIT team named as “ITS n AIT Team” including Happy Aprillia
(Energy, field of Study) & Nasa Zata Dina (Computer Sciences and Information
Management, Field of Study) was declared as 1st Runner Up and won a prize of 30,000
Baht. The other team named as “Spark Plugs” including Muhammad Afzal Chaudhry &
Mazlina Zaira from Construction Engineering and Infrastructure Management Field of
study, won the “Most Honourable Team” award.
Champions of International Debate Competition
Organised by FAO
FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (RAP) organized a forest awarenessraising activity to mark the “International Day of Forests” in Thailand. In this regard
they organized a Policy Debate Competition under the theme” Forestry in a Changing
World” on 21st March 2014 at FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific.
AIT team comprising of three students from Natural Resources Management field of
study participated in the competition. Aung Kyaw Naing (Masters Student in Natural
Resources Management), Rehan Ul Haq (Doctoral student in Natural Resources Management) and Sam Chanthy
(Doctoral Student in Natural Resources Management) debated on the proposition "That the best way to conserve
forests is to keep people out of the forests".
AIT team secured 1st position and grabbed FAO trophy, one of the speaker from the AIT team Sam Chanty also got
the “Best Speaker Award”.
New Vendor in SU Café and W-Dorm
Two new food places opened their doors in AIT,
one in SU Café and the other in the W dorm
named as, Cool Corner. Both vendors will serve
snacks and drinks including ice creams, pizza,
sandwiches, noodles and variety of drinks. The
decision have been taken to increase places
where students can sit, relax and enjoy quality
food.
