He then joined the United Nations Organization in 1999. He served seven years in Post -war Kosovo as a member of United Nations. He established and headed the Culture Ministry of Kosovo. During this tenure, Mr Rao revamped the old Communist administered heritage institutions like the Protection of Monuments institution in Kosovo, into Modern Heritage Institutions with help of Council of Europe and the UNESCO. Mr. Rao was also instrumental in developing the Heritage Policy of Kosovo in the after math of destruction about 100 mosques and 100 churches. He negotiated some of the most difficult agreements between the Orthodox Serbian Church and the Albanian Muslim dominated Kosovo government on restoration of damaged cultural properties. During this time UNESCO nominated three monuments from Kosovo as World Heritage Sites. Mr. Rao whose life’s passion has been to protect and preserve cultural heritage and history was the man who conceived the idea of preserving and promoting Kakatiya Heritage in Warangal district. PROJECTS 1) POTHANA PROJECT The Pothana Project was undertaken by the Kakatiya Heritage Trust to build a fitting memorial for the Telugu 14/ 15th Century Poet Pothana. The land tilled by Pothana was acquired by the KHT at Bammera Village in Warangal District to establish a poetic oasis for seekers of Pothana’s writings and history. His samadhi of Pothana and the well from which he drew water also lies in this land. The construction of the Pothana memorial is set to take of in 2014 in cooperation with Telengana Tourism Department. 2) THOUSAND PILLAR TEMPLE KALYANAMANDAPAM RESTORATION PROJECT The momentous project of restoring the Kalyanamandapam of the Thousand Pillar temple at Warangal was undertaken by The Archaeological Survey of India in 2005. The Kakatiya Heritage Trust has offered its technical support this restoration work. This project is projected to be completed by December 2014. NEWS WORLD HERITAGE STATUSThe Kakatiya Heritage Trust has initiated the process of bringing Kakatiya Monuments in to World Heritage List. The Trust hired the Consultant Surya Narayan Murthy to prepare a proposal to get the Kakatiya Monuments to get Tentatively Listed with UNESCO. The proposal was prepared in consultation with ASI and got the approval of the State Government. The proposal was cleared by the Heritage Committee of the Government of India and was forwarded to UNESCO. UNESCO has accepted the proposal and Kakatiya Monuments are put in the Tentative List of World Heritage Sites. Please see the following link http://whc.unesco.org/en/tentativelists/5889/ However, there is long way to get Kakatiya Monuments as World Heritage Sites. For instance the Golcconda Fort was in the tentative list for over a decade but still not approves as World Heritage Site. The next step is to prepare a detailed dossier in consultation with ASI and Telengana Government. The Government of India has to send the proposal to UNESCO. The GOI will send only two proposals every year. So we have to compete nationally to get Kakatiya Monuments to be considered by the GOI to be send to UNESCO. There after an international expert committee will visit the Kakatiya Monuments and make a report to UNESCO. Finally the ECOMOS, a Heritage Expert Body will vote in its annual meeting on favour to reject a proposal. KHT will pursue the matter till Kakatiya Monuments gets the World Heritage Site status. been striving to achieve the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage Site status for the Thousand Pillar Temple and famous Ramappa Temple of Warangal District.
