Chandra Mohan Dr. D. Jaya Krishna Dr. Karthik Balasubramanian Dr. Subhankar Sen Organized by Department of Mechanical Engineering National Institute of Technology Warangal Warangal, 506 004, Telangana State energy generation through renewables. Recognizing the vast potential of renewables, Government of India has set-up an independent ministry; Ministry of new and renewable energy. However, these renewables have their advantages and limitations viz., region specific and season specific. The National Workshop on Advances in Sustainable Energy Studies (ASES) to be held during November 1-2, 2014, for the benefit of budding Ph.D scholars and young faculty of Mechanical, Civil, Environmental engineering etc. intends to provide an insight into state of the art of use of the above mentioned energy sources. Resource Persons Prominent experts from both academia and industry will deliver lectures. Introduction Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP) was commissioned in many technical education institutes by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) towards enhancing the academic and research potential of the supported institutes in order to produce world class engineering graduates. NIT Warangal is one of the premier institutes implementing the TEQIP schemes. Now it is TEQIP, Phase II, in operation with the objectives of (i) increasing enrollment in existing and new PG programmes in Engineering and applied sciences, (ii) providing avenues for advancement of professional qualifications, subject knowledge and research competence through training programmes, workshops, conferences, etc in modern areas of S&T, (iii) promoting research in cutting-edge technologies by supporting inter-disciplinary centres of excellence, industrial liaison and international collaboration for academic exchange and (iv) supporting postgraduate programmes in new and industry-focused engineering subjects Theme of the Workshop Consumption of fossil fuel reserves for meeting energy demands has become a yardstick to rate whether a country is a developed or developing country. No doubt civilization has become rapid with the exponential growth in consumption of fossil fuels. Also, fossil fuel derived civilization has brought with it a host of problems, prominent being pollution (GHGs and associated climate change issues) and fluctuating prices. Moreover, dependency on OPEC nations for import of fossil resources is also leading to loss of country’s exchequer. In this context, self sustainability, energy security, energy independence and carbon credits have become buzzwords among the research community. The only solution is to adopt energy conservation techniques and switching over to alternative/ sustainable/renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, biomass, geothermal etc. It is interesting to know that many of the power generating enterprises are diversifying their activities on the About Warangal Warangal is known for its rich historical and cultural heritage and for agrarian economy. It is situated at a distance of 140 km from Hyderabad. Warangal is well connected by rail and road. NIT Warangal campus is about 2 km away from Kazipet Railway Junction that halts many southern-, northern- and east-coast-bound express trains. Warangal Railway Station is about 12 km form NIT Warangal. Passengers are advised to alight at Kazipet if their train route is through it or Warangal if Kazipet station is not in their route. About NIT Warangal National Institute of Technology (formerly Regional Engineering College), Warangal is the first among RECs and was setup in 1959 as a joint venture of the Government of India and the AP State Government. The foundation Stone was laid by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. It became NIT in 2002 under the exclusive governance of the MHRD. Over the years, NITW has developed into a premier institute and is ranked among the top 10 technical education institutes in the country. There are 14 Departments offering B.Tech (in 8 Branches), M.Tech (in 24Courses), MSc. (Tech.), MSc, MBA and MCA. PhD programmes are being offered in all engineering, sciences, humanities and management. Every Department has modestly advanced research infrastructure. The Computer Centre houses hundreds of computer terminals with the state of the art configuration of hardware and software to cater to the computational needs of all the Departments. The NIT Warangal is a (secure) Wi-Fi Campus. The Central Library has lakhs of books in all modern areas of S&T and subscribes to many print and e-journals. It is in INDEST Consortium with free access to Science Direct. About the Department of Mechanical Engineering The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers an undergraduate program in Mechanical Engineering and seven Post-graduate programs in different specialized areas of Mechanical Engineering. The Department has well qualified and experienced faculty and good laboratory facilities. The Department has liaison with reputed industries and R&D organizations such as DRDO, NFTDC, Ashok Leyland, BHEL,(R&D); ARAI, CMTI. Currently the Department is executing several consultancy and R&D projects. A Centre of Excellence on Sustainable Energy Studies has been sanctioned to the Department with an outlay of Rs. 5.00 Crores under TEQIP-II. The Department also offers Ph.D programme in Mechanical Engineering and also has been recognized as a QIP centre for M.Tech and Ph.D in Mechanical Engineering.
