I previously led the Genitourinary Oncology Research Program at New York Presbyterian Hospital-Weill Cornell Medical College followed by the development of a premiere clinical and translational research program in urothelial cancer at Memorial SloanKettering Cancer Center (MSKCC). In my role as Section Chief of GU Oncology at UNC, I am focused on the development of a premiere translational and clinical research program in multiple GU-related cancers including prostate, bladder, kidney and testicular cancer. The clinical trials program comprises investigator initiated, cooperative group (ALLIANCE), and pharmaceutical sponsored trials. I work closely with the other members of the GU medical oncology service. The specific aim of the translational research program is to design GU-specific clinical trials that utilize an integrated genomics approach to characterize tumors for genetic alterations. This goal is predicated on the concept that genomic alterations predict sensitivity or resistance to novel targeted agents. The central tenet is that prospective characterization of tumors in the laboratory will accelerate the development of promising novel agents in the clinic. A second, clinically oriented goal of the GU program will be to design and conduct trials that specifically address the issues related to the treatment of older adults with cancer. Upcoming UOAA conferences 2014 UOAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference (Hosted by Ostomy Support Group of Northern Virginia, LLC and it's satellite: Ostomy Connections Support Group, Fredericksburg, Virginia Friday/Saturday/Sunday, May 2-4, 2014 Holiday Inn Washington Dulles International Airport, Dulles, Virginia 4 More News You Can Use: Welcome to Eric Webster, who attended his first TAOA meeting in February. Eric has had an ileostomy for over 30 years and learned about the association from the ostomy clinic at Duke Raleigh. Best wishes to John Saunders for better health this spring. John had ostomy surgery in October but has had some complications plus the flu since then. Visitor Training Session (held 2/22) was a success. Four members received training - Eric Webster, Dan Richards, Alison Lee, and Domenique Tanzini. Thanks to Stephanie Yates, WOC nurse for coordinating and presenting the training. Cancellation of the March meeting was due to Wake County Schools being cancelled the day of our meeting. We adopted this policy due to the wide variation in road conditions and the school system is usually being safe when they cancel school. A great big THANK YOU to Ruth Rhodes and to Ed Winters, for e-mails and telephone calls to members reminding them of this policy on the day of the March meeting. Please be sure to inform the TAOA Board of your phone and e-mail address changes.
