GOLF
Water
We are more than just fortunate to have STM’s Wynand Ferreira as our
Green’s Superintendent. With the dedication that Wynand exhibits to
his work along with his loyalty to Durbanville Golf Club, it is little
wonder that he is considered by STM to be their best superintendent.
There is no better example of Wynand’s commitment to this club than
his involvement over the debacle that has been the supply of effluent
water. In what has been one of the severest summers in recent time,
Wynand has worked tirelessly over the last few months chivvying the
council to maintain some sort of flow to our top dam while they have
been upgrading their system, and his level-headed and practical
approach to watering has meant that while other courses in the Cape have struggled to
maintain consistency with their playing surfaces, Durbanville’s greens and fairways have
remained second to none.
We all owe a huge debt of gratitude to Wynand and his STM team; after all without a
course there would be no club.
For those of you who enjoy statistics: to be maintained in perfect condition the course
requires 1,000,000 litres of water each day and while the lower dam has a holding
capacity of just over 50 million litres, the top dam has a capacity of just under 50 million
litres.
The maths is fairly straightforward, discounting around 10% of the total capacity as
being lost to evaporation or being simply irretrievable, the dams hold enough water for
approximately 90 days. With the irrigation season being a minimum of seven months
long, it is easy to see why we are so dependent on the supply of effluent water.
It may be interesting for you to note that while the effluent system has been failing us,
Wynand, through hand watering and reduced timings, has halved the amount of water
used on the course. However, despite our efforts to use less water, we are still beset by
problems not of our making. The council has just written to say that they are unable to
provide us with effluent water from Monday as they are ‘experiencing a delay’ in their
programme. With the irrigation dam at a dangerously low level it would seem that we
will have to use the potable water connection sooner rather than later!
The latest news we have on the de Villiers Road development project is that work now
seems likely to start in July or August of this year and our sub-committee is busy
seeking the council’s help in writing into the contractor’s tender the earthworks and
necessary pipework and pumping equipment needed for a detention dam around the
waste bunker areas alongside the 7th and 15th Greens. As well as making both holes
more interesting, the proposed dam would increase our water holding capacity by a
minimum of a further 25 million litres and would assist the council by taking the stormwater off the new road.
More news when we have it...
Ladies Club Championships
The Ladies Club Championships were fought out last weekend in a wonderful spirit of
friendly competitiveness, and the enthusiasm of all competitors and the pleasure with
which they greeted their unexpected award of prizes at the prize giving supper was a
delight to behold. It was clear that, despite Sunday’s rain, the ladies had enjoyed a most
successful competition. Indeed, it was a great pleasure to see the tables in the lapa area
taken up on Saturday afternoon by so many ladies so obviously enjoying themselves.
Sunday’s prize giving saw Silver Division winner, Ingrid
Going, crowned as the Ladies Club Champion for 2014.
Other results saw Marge Hierons win the Bronze
Division while Lorinda Nieuwoudt won the Copper
Division. Lorinda also took the Best Nett Trophy with an
overall nett score of 141 over the two days. Maretha
Coetzee walked away with the Golden Oldies Trophy
while Mona Coetzee won the Ouma Shield.
The prizes, very generously sponsored by Nancy
Grabham’s sisters, were presented by Nancy and Ladies’ Captain, Margaret de Wet.
Finally, in an attempt to
spread the prizes
around, the Ladies Club
Championships adopted
the same principle as is
in use with the Club
Championships, that of
one player one prize.
Club Championships 2014
Entry lists for the 2014 Club Championships are now up on the notice board. Entry fees
for the three divisions stand at R200 for players with pre-paid green-fees and R500 for
non-pre-paid green fees players. The four rounds of the Club Championships are being
held over the first two weekends in April.

Junior Section
From left to right Daniël Albutt, Michael Klaver, Connor de Groote & Tristan Hamilton.
Four junior members of Durbanville Golf Club who also play for Fairmont High School 1st
team recently competed in the WP regional qualifying round of the National High School
Championships.
The team finished 2nd and qualified for the National Championships to be held in
Bloemfontein in June. This is also the first time that a Fairmont golf team will play in the
National Championships. Tristan Hamilton and Conner de Groote have also been lucky
enough to represent WP during the last twelve months. Well done to the boys on their
achievement.
South African Senior Inter Provincial Tournament
Congratulations to Andrew Cleophas who this week was selected to play for the WP
team in the SA Senior Inter Provincial Tournament being held at de Zalze Golf Estate
from 7th to 11th April. Well done, Andrew. Brilliant news!
PMGA – Play Golf with the Pros
Robert and Johan, Lana Orgovanyi’s two very capable
assistants, are very good golfers in their own right and we
have asked them to be available to play with members on
Wednesdays, Saturdays, Tuesdays with the Ladies Society
and Fridays with the Weekday Morning Members.
To get things going they will put their names down if they
see a gap in the booking sheet, but equally, they are both
very approachable and if you would like them to join your
fourball then we are sure that if they are available they
will be more than happy to do so if asked.
A SERIES of THREE INDIVIDUAL LESSONS for R499
Robert and Johan are offering a special package of lessons that will not break the
bank; bookings can be made either through the Pro-Shop or directly with them. They
come highly recommended.
In addition, Lana’s two Assistant Coaches are offering a late afternoon clinic for all
comers on Thursday afternoons. Full details can be seen below.

Barry Rhodes – Rules of Golf
This week I am answering four questions that have arisen during the abnormally wet and
stormy weather that many of us have experienced over the past few months.
Q1. Due to sand erosion and/or flooding a Committee has defined an entire bunker as
ground under repair. What is the reference point for taking relief?
A1. First, it should be noted that Committees should not take a bunker out of play just
because it is expected that there will be casual water lying in it throughout the
competition. The Rules of Golf anticipate casual water in bunkers and offer three relief
options (see this earlier blog, Casual Water in Bunkers). However, when a bunker has
been declared ground under repair, it loses its status as a hazard and is automatically
classified as ‘through the green’. The relief is then the same as taking relief from any
other abnormal ground condition under Rule 25–1b(i), and so, providing the ball is
found, the reference point is the nearest point from where the ball lies in the bunker. If
the ball is not found, but is known or virtually certain to be in the bunker, the reference
point is the nearest point from where the ball crossed the margin of the bunker, as in
Rule 25-1c.
Q2. Following weeks of above average rainfall there were occasions when a pond on the
course overflowed outside of the hazard stakes defining its margin. Is the overflow
casual water?
A2. Yes. Any overflow of water from a water hazard which is outside the margin of the
hazard is casual water. Decision 25/2.
Q3. In order to protect the weather ravaged putting greens, a Committee was forced to
use temporary greens cut on the fairway approaches. They introduced a Local Rule
permitting players whose balls were on the temporary putting green of the hole in play,
to pick-up their ball and add two strokes to their score. Is this permitted?
A3. No, Decision 33-8/1 confirms that any Local Rule under which a player in a stroke
play competition would not be required to hole out waives Rule 1-1 and is not permitted.
Q4. Whilst preparing to drive their ball on a links course running along by the sea, a
player notices that his teed ball is oscillating in the gale force cross-wind that is blowing.
He asks his two fellow competitors to stand to the side of him and his ball as protection
from the gusts of wind. Is this permitted?
A4. No. Accepting protection from the wind from the fellow competitors would be a
breach of Rule 14-2a, which states that a player must not make a stroke while accepting
physical assistance or protection from the elements.
Load Shedding
The emergency load shedding programme embarked on by Eskom has serious
implications for the club as it places great strain on our antiquated irrigation system by
upsetting the timing system. In the clubhouse our generators are really only capable of
keeping the Pro-Shop tills running, other points of sale, such as the upstairs bar, are not
covered when there is a loss of electricity. We are looking to improve the situation, but
for the moment we would ask you, please, to be patient.
Wishful Thinking
One of Bob Taylor’s seniors was out on the course this week, making his way round
slowly and painfully. After nine holes he hobbled into the Halfway House and ordered a
Vanilla Sundae.
‘Crushed nuts?’ asked the girl at the counter.
‘No,’ he replied. ‘Arthritis.’
And finally...
Enjoy your golf this weekend and remember: golf was once a rich man’s sport, but now
it has millions of poor players.
