PITTSBURG- Police are investigating a fatal hit-and-run collision that killed a 37 year old Lodi man late Sunday night in this
Contra Costa city.
Stephen David Goertzen, a steelworker from Lodi, died at the scene after his Harley-Davidson motorcycle collided with a 1975
Ford Granada on a busy residential thoroughfare at 11:10 pm Sunday, Goertzen was not wearing a helmet. At least two people
were in the Ford and fled from the scene on foot after the collision, according to Sgt. Bob Greenberg of the Pittsburgh Police
Department. The car was registered to a leasing company, he said. Police have leads on the identities of at least two suspects who
they believe were in the car that hit Goertzen, he said. The cause of the collision has not been determined, said Greenberg.
Goerzen was northbound on Montezuma Street, and the Ford was eastbound on West 10th Street when they collided at the
intersection.Police do not know how fast the cars were traveling. The intersection has stop signs for Montezuma Street travelers
but not for West 10th Street drivers, said Greenberg.Goertzen was a very experienced motorcyclist, according to relatives. He
only recently purchased the motorcycle he was riding when he died. There were several witnesses to the collision, said Greenberg.

Jeff Hughes 12/31/1965 gunshot wound
From the Lodi News-Sentinel, January 3, 1966:
Sheriff deputies continued yesterday to investigate the fatal shooting of a 14 year old Victor boy in his home New Year's Eve.
The victim, Jeffrey Lynn Hughes, son of Darrel and Maxine Hughes, was pronounced dead on arrival at Lodi Memorial Hospital
at 1:44 pm. He had been shot once through the lower jaw with a 410 gauge shotgun pellets, in the bedroom of his home. Officers
said the boy's mother heard something falling, went to investigate, and found her son, his clothing soaked with water and blood,
lying on the floor near the hall. Mrs. Hughes ran for her husband who was in the garage, and he immediately called an
ambulance. Officers said the shotgun was found alongside a dresser near the entrance to the bedroom, and on the bed were
numerous shotgun shells and a key to a small locker where the ammunition was kept. Mrs. Hughes said she did not hear a shot.
Both parents were in a state of shock, and had not been questioned extensively as of last night. Neither could explain the water
soaked clothing. Both parents insisted that the boy was not despondent, and there were no notes or indications of suicide.
The youth was a native of Lincoln, Nebraska and had lived in the Victor area for the past nine years. A graduate of the Victor
Elementary School, he was a student at Lodi High School. He was a member of the Alpine-Victor 4-H Club, and a part time
employee at the Dari-Dale Creamery.
In addition to his parents he is survived by a younger sister and brother, Terri and Daniel; and his grandmothers, Mrs. Ruth
Firebaugh and Mrs. Hazel Hughes, both of Lincoln, Nebraska.

Charles Joens 8/10/1974
car accident
A 22-year old Lodi man and an Acampo youth were killed in two separate solo auto crashes Saturday and another man, brother
of the Acampo youth, is hospitalized with major injuries.
Dead are Charles C. Joens, 14 N Sunset Drive, who was killed in an accident in the 300 block of East Locust Street early
Saturday morning...
...Joens was ejected from a small foreign car which was driven by Ryan E. Jaeger, also 22, and the car rolled over him. Jaeger
was also ejected from the auto through a sun roof and onto the street but escaped injury. He told officers he didn't know how
Joens was thrown from the car. When he got up from the street after the accident he began looking for Joens and discovered he
was pinned under the car which was lying on its side.
He said he went to look for help and when he returned passers-by had stopped and they helped him lift the car to an upright
position.
Jaeger told officers he had been traveling east on Locust Street at about 25 miles an hour when a large black dog ran in front of
the car. He swerved and possibly over corrected his swerve, saw a pickup truck coming and applied the brakes. This was when
the car apparently rolled over.
No charges were made at the time of the accident, according to police, although the investigation will continue and it will be
reviewed by the district attorney's office.
Joens, who had massive head injuries, was admtted to Lodi Memorial Hospital after the 1:55 am accident and died about 2 hours
later....
...Funeral services for Joens will be held at 11 am Tuesday in the chapel of Humphrey's Funeral Home.
He was born in Lodi, attended Lodi schools and graduated from Lodi High School in 1969. He also graduated from San Joaquin
Delta College and attended Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo.
