LCI Certification Seminar

League of American Bicyclists
LCI Certification Seminar
University of Illinois at Chicago
August 22-24, 2014
Dear LCI Candidate,
Welcome to your LCI Seminar. I will be your coach, and I welcome you to this opportunity to promote bicycling by
becoming a League of American Bicyclists League Cycling Instructor (LCI). This letter is to let you know what to expect at
the seminar and what is expected of you in order to be certified as a League Cycling Instructor.
The League needs instructors to bring cycling proficiency to cyclists and to work within our communities to make the
environment better for cycling. Your desire to help is appreciated. The League also has an obligation to insure that our
instructors are qualified.
This course is not about bike stuff. It is about teaching bike stuff. We expect that you come to the seminar already knowing a
lot about bikes.
Assessment Tool: Links to an Assessment Tool and other documents were provided in an e-mail from the League. Use the
documents to carefully research and check your answers to the Assessment Tool. Download the MS Excel Assessment Tool
Answer workbook provided at http://chicagobicycle.org/LCI and enter your answers to the Assessment Tool. Return your
answers to me by email no later than Friday, August 8, two weeks before the seminar. Do not send me your copy of the
Assessment Tool; send only the Answer Workbook..
Admittance to the seminar may be denied because of a low score on the Assessment Tool. An 85% is the recommend
minimum passing score. An initial score of less than 75% will require counseling.
Please do not wait until the last minute to turn in your answers. If your answers are not returned by the deadline you may not
be allowed to attend the seminar. Your answers are used to focus attention on areas where you might benefit from additional
work. Also, presentation topics are assigned based on individual Assessment Tool answers.
You will receive an email with the results of your answers, but the assessment tool will not be covered duringthe seminar. If
you wish to discuss it, please bring your copy to the seminar so we will be able to clarify areas that are unclear to you during
breaks.

Performance Evaluation: Your performance will be evaluated in four areas during the seminar:
Bicycle Knowledge: Do you know the parts of the bicycle, what they do and how to maintain and repair them?
Bicycle Handling Skills: Can you handle your bicycle well on the parking lot and on the road? Can you demonstrate the
parking lot drills in a way that a student can understand and follow? Revised Field Cards for the Parking Lot drills are
available at http://chicagobicycle.org/LCI Please download, print, and review them. Some of the assessment tool answers
are on these cards.

Since you were required to take a League Traffic Skills 101 class prior to attending the seminar you will have had practice
with the hazard avoidance maneuvers known as: Quick Stop, Rock Dodge and Quick Turn. Proficiency (defined as
acceptable performance on three consecutive demonstrations) will be expected from you as an LCI Candidate; please practice
these maneuvers in a safe area. Inability to demonstrate proficiency on the hazard avoidance drills may require additional
work or restrictions on your certification.
Vehicular Cycling and Group Control: We will be evaluating your knowledge of the rules of the road and how you ride on
the road. We will also be evaluating your control of a group of “students” on a road ride course.
Presentation Skills: In addition to your knowledge and skills we will be evaluating your performance as an instructor. How
well do you organize your lesson plan, present materials, engage and critique the students and check for understanding both
in the classroom and on the bicycle?
After your answers to the Assessment are reviewed you will be assigned two presentation subjects from the list at the seminar
web site. One will be a joint presentation and one will be an individual presentation. Lesson plan documents are at
http://chicagobicycle.org/LCI if you wish to use them. You may prepare handouts or simply give your presentation with the
Traffic Skills 101 manual and a bicycle. However if you wish to be more elaborate, you will have access to audio/video
equipment including a computer with Windows 7, PowerPoint 2010, and projector.
Attendance: Everyone is expected to be in attendance at all times during the seminar. A typical agenda is available at
http://chicagobicycle.org/LCI We will review and modify it as required at the start of the seminar.
Concepts and Techniques: We will be working together through some useful teaching techniques, including modeling and
role-play so you will be better prepared to make your own presentations in front of a class.
Certification: All candidates who successfully complete the seminar will be certified as LCI. You will be required to coinstruct at least twice with another LCI to gain experience in teaching the various League curricula before you are allowed to
teach by yourself.
What happens to participants who do not meet the requirements to be certified as an LCI? We still want you to be successful.
You will leave the seminar knowing where you stand. Depending on the circumstances there are various options, which I will
present to you on the first day. A candidate may be asked to perform additional work in one of the performance areas where
there are issues. Candidates may be asked to attend another seminar with a different League coach, usually without charge.
Of course, candidates normally do a fine job and we are excited that your contributions to cycling and your association with
the League of American Bicyclists will serve to further bicycling in America. We want you to enjoy yourself, fully
participate, and leave the seminar with a greater understanding of what quality instruction looks like. Please contact me if you
have any questions or concerns.
I look forward to meeting you at the seminar.
