President’s Report
available to all Kyneton
airfield users, not just
those in the club.
Well March came
around very quickly, it
only seems like
yesterday we were
enjoying Christmas and
New Year.
The last couple of
months have been fairly
active with the Minister
for Aviation, local MPs,
the Mayor and other
Councillors attending
the airfield for a media
event. I’m very excited
to announce that our
application for funding
from the Regional
Aviation Fund was
successful and we are
now able to upgrade the
Club’s fuel and airfield
lighting facilities with
modern and safer
facilities which will be
We’ve also had a bit of
fun and hard work
getting our new
classroom and meeting
room ready for use.
Another working bee is
coming up on the 15th of
March and I encourage
everyone who is able to
help to come along.
Our trusty tractor “Big
Red” is back in action
following a clutch
replacement earlier in
the month. Despite there
being little rain, the
grass continues to grow.
Remember, if you’re
going out mowing, make
sure you have a fire
fighting knapsack with
you, the grass is very
dry and would only take
the slightest spark from
the blades on a rock to
start a fire.

review. Once the Councillors
have accepted the draft
report, it will be circulated for
yet more public comment
prior to the Councillors voting
on the recommendations
contained within the report.
As soon as I have a copy of the
report I will distribute to
members.
Another local WWII
veteran, Grahame
Bateman’s Auster MkV
was in the media
recently as the
backdrop for many of
the publicity photos
doing the rounds with
myself and our visiting
dignitaries during the
recent funding
announcement.
Until next time. Safe flying.
The other activity still
ongoing is the Council’s

latest news I have
received from Council is
that the consultants have
completed their draft
report which has been

Ministerial Visit & Media Announcement
On Friday the 7th of February, The Hon Gordon Rich-Phillips, Minister for the Aviation Industry, hosted
a media event at Kyneton to announce that Kyneton Aero Club’s application to the Regional Aviation
Fund had been successful. The Minister was joined by local MP Amanda Millar, the Macedon Ranges
Shire Council Mayor Roger Jukes and Councilors Henry McLaughlin and John Letchford.
The grant of $180,000 will see a new 10,000 litre AVGAS tank and self-service bowser replace the very
old unit the club currently utilizes. The grant will also fund a replacement airfield lighting system and
Pilot Activated Lighting unit which will replace the ageing and manually intensive portable system
currently in use at the airfield. Both of these upgraded facilities will be Kyneton Aero Club assets at the
completion of the project.
These two upgrades will provide improved services for both local and itinerant users. The new fuel
facility will continue to provide a discounted fuel and invoice payment option for KAC members while
allowing non-KAC members to use the facility via Visa or Mastercard credit cards.
The PAL lighting will also provide a new training opportunity for our CFI Mike Bourke for those wishing
to obtain their Night VFR raiting as well as allowing exiting Night VFR Rating holders to maintain their
currency at their home field.
Both projects are anticipated to be completed in time for the Biggest Morning Tea in mid-May.

Classroom Working Bee #1
On Saturday the 8th of February, about 20 members of the club, ably coordinated by Mark
Dromgool, got stuck in to our new classroom to prepare it for the carpet to be laid and painted
internally and externally. Much of the preparation was completed by mid afternoon with all holes
patched and the carpet cleaned and laid.
The next working bee will be held on Saturday the 15th of March from 09:00 and will focus on
sanding back all the patched areas inside and out and starting to get some paint on the walls. So
if you’re free that day, please come down and help out, we’re hoping to have the room ready to
use by the end of this day.

From The CFI
Our Chief Flying Instructor Mike Bourke celebrates a milestone with the Kyneton Aero Club in March
2014. This month will mark 10 years since Mike became the KAC CFI and I’d like to congratulate Mike on
reaching this milestone and for his tireless service to the club. Mike did rattle off some stats during our
last Committee meeting regarding the number of students, TIFs, circuits etc. that he’s flown/instructed
since starting and the numbers were very impressive...unfortunately I didn’t write them down!
Mike will be taking a well earned break for a couple of weeks in March and will be away from Monday
the 11th of March until Tuesday the 25th of March. There will be no instructor services during that time.
REMINDER: Mike on leave from 11th to 25th of March
SAAA Chapter 20 BBQ
Sunday 23rd March SAAA Chapter 20 will be having a Sport Aircraft meet and BBQ at Kyneton Airfield.
Various members will have their aircraft out to look over and talk about from about mid-morning on.
We hope Kyneton Aero Club members will join us. We’re just doing a sausage and burger sizzle, bread,
and maybe a dash of salad/coleslaw, nothing fancy. If members could let Norm know of your likely
attendance for BBQ catering purposes – thanks! RSVP to Norm at [email protected]

Around the Field
Mike Dalton’s classic Cessna 195 which has been
out of the air for quite a few months over at
Riddells Creek due to some minor structural
repairs will be returning to the skies soon. It’s
currently at Horsham getting some fresh paint
before returning home to Kyneton.
Another aircraft also getting some new paint is
Mike Fisher’s Beech Bonanza, hope to see her in
her new livery soon.

Trip Report: CMA14 Point Cook Airshow
The Australian Defence Force recently celebrated a very significant milestone with the Centenary of Military
Aviation Airshow at Point Cook on the weekend of 1-2 March 2014. Murray Wallace and myself were honoured to
be part of this event and participating in the flying display both days, Murray flying both his CT4 and Cessna
180.
The show highlighted as much flying history as possible with WWI aircraft such as the Sopwith Pup leading the
display through to 1930’s, WWII, Korea, Vietnam and the latest in modern military aircraft.
One truly unique special moment was watching the RAAF Museum’s replica Bristol Boxkite take to the skies at
exactly 100 years to the day, hour and minute of the first flight at Point Cook at 07:40 on the 1st of March 2014.

Kyneton Aero Club was established in November
1966 by a group of like minded individuals that
saw the potential of general aviation in regional
areas. Strongly supported by the Kyneton Shire at
the time, the Kyneton Airfield was established
with responsibility for its management in the
hands of the Kyneton Aero Club. This arrangement is still in place with the Kyneton Aero Club
responsible for the operations and management
of the airfield.

Reminder: Preferred Circuit Patterns at YKTN
In order to maintain a positive relationship with our neighbors, a fly neighborly policy has
been in place at Kyneton for some time. In order to continue to improve on our operations
and address noise complaints and other concerns raised from time to time, we have
prepared the plan below which shows the preferred circuits to be flown at Kyneton Airfield.
These circuits are approximately 1nm (1.8km) in lateral displacement from the runway in use
providing for safe operations in the event of an engine failure in circuit. They also track
directly overhead major roads / rivers and avoid homes / properties where possible.

RWY 18/36: Northern boundary is the road that runs east-west to the north of Sunbury
Lodge. Southern boundary is the Old Calder Highway. Western boundary is the
Campaspe River.

RWY 27/09: Northern and Western boundaries as per RWY 18/36. Eastern boundary is
Edgecombe Road.

These are preferred patterns only, ultimately the decision for safe operation of the aircraft
rests with the pilot in charge.
