FOREWORD • VOORWOORD
South Africa has been identified by Population
Action International as a global hotspot for
population growth amidst high projected
declines in agricultural production or lower
resilience to climate change, or both. The
challenges to commercial cattlemen are many.
Angus SA and Angus Beef (Pty) Limited are
committed to provide South African stockmen
with world class Angus genetics aimed at
effective beef production and consumer
satisfaction.
Suid-Afrika is deur Population Action
International as 'n globale brandpunt vir
bevolkingsgroei geïdentifiseer te midde van hoë
projeksies vir 'n afname in landbouproduksie of
laer weerstand teen klimaatsveranderinge, of
beide. Die uitdagings aan kommersiële
beesboere is talryk. Angus SA en Angus Beef (Pty)
Limited is daartoe verbind om Suid-Afrikaanse
beesboere van wêreldklas genetika te voorsien
wat op doeltreffende beesvleisproduksie en
verbruikersbevrediging gemik is.
The Angus breed and the demand for South
African Angus beef have shown dramatic growth
over the past years. The South African Angus
stud and South African Angus beef breeders are
geared to take beef production into the future
backed by national and international awareness
of the importance of carcass quality in beef
production, research in the field of genomics and
bovine nutrition.

How to offer your Angus weaner
calves under the Angus Beef Protocol
1.
Angus crossbred calves are acceptable but purebred Angus calves are preferred: these
calves must be sired by a registered red or black Angus bull and must not portray any of
the following characteristics –
2.
a.
Phonotypical zebu type characteristics
b.
Horns or prominent scurs
c.
Prominent navel fold or sheath
d.
Long ears
e.
Large or prominent thoracic hump
You must be in possession of the registration certificate of your Angus bull and must
complete the registration form on page 56 of this manual. Such a form can be
downloaded from the website www.angus.org.za and must be completed for each
registered Angus bull used in your herd. This form must be faxed to 051 447 2378 or
posted to Angus Beef, P.O. Box 6759, Bloemfontein 9300 before you would like to sell
your calves.
3.
When your calves are born, contact us at 051 447 9849 or at [email protected]
Angus Beef will provide you with the amount of prescribed and numbered ear tags
according to the SA Angus Beef Protocol.
4.
The prescribed ear tags must be inserted in the left ear of the weaner calf and the
numbers of these ear tags must be recorded and supplied to the feedlot that purchases
your weaner calves.
5.
When your Angus calves are ready to be marketed, please inform Angus Beef at
051 447 9849 or [email protected] and we will forward the availability of such
calves to the registered feedlots.
6.
The calves which you have thus delivered must be traceable from the feedlot that
purchases them to your farm back to the registered Angus bull that sired them. This
process is audited by SAMIC and is tested using DNA profiling.
7.
The price that you receive for your calves depends on their quality and your reputation
as a supplier of calves to the feedlots.

NETHERWOOD ANGUS
TAKES THE LEAD IN KZN
cattle breeds nationally with the bull
Netherwood KOC RK 1141.
The Netherwood stud consists of 200 stud cows
and includes an embryo transfer program. Bulls
are performance tested by undergoing both
phase D testing on the farm as well as Phase C
testing at the ARC test station at Cedara. About
20 bulls are entered annually into the Phase C
test.
RK 1141 Netherwood KOC in dry Midlands winter dress.
R
obbie Kleinloog of Netherwood Angus
outside Nottingham Road announced that
from 2013 he offers a R1 premium per kilogram
to all commercial stockman for weaner calves
sired by registered red Angus bulls of
Netherwood bought at his annual sale. The
calves should be out of Angus type cows to
produce pure Angus progeny.
The offer of Netherwood confirms the
confidence they have in the ability of the Angus
bulls to sire calves which perform under feedlot
conditions. Kleinloog recently visited prominent
Angus herds in North America and witnessed the
advantages well-bred Angus cattle selected for
economic relevant traits yield under feedlot
conditions. An Angus bull calf reaches it optimal
ADG (average daily gain) at an age of 296 days
and Angus heifers at 272 days. It is around that
age when an Angus weaner calf can be fed with
optimal financial return.
In addition Netherwood runs a commercial
Angus herd from which a derivative Angus Plus
program is administered.
The Angus Plus program entails production of
Angus animals into which 18% Brahman genetics
is bred. This produces an animal which is ideal for
the South African commercial farmer where the
disease resistance, heat tolerance and walking
ability is embellished into a smooth coated
animal.
Netherwood was awarded the prestigious
Silver Cup (second to the coveted Gold Cup) at
the 2013 Royal Show, KZN for the best pen of
commercial heifers, and offers a substantial
number of heifers at their annual Angus Elite
Sale which is held annually in August combined
with the Epworth Stud.
Netherwood is conveniently situated near the
N3 highway in Nottingham Road, KZN.
The value of the quality of Angus beef must not
be underestimated and is the reason why Angus
Beef commands a premium from the end
consumer worldwide.
The production of pure Angus beef is only
possible when the origin thereof is pure Angus
genetics.
Netherwood is one of the leading Angus studs in
South Africa which submits Angus bulls for Phase
C testing annually. Kleinloog was a finalist during

BULL MANAGEMENT
What to do with your new Angus bull
Once you have acquired your registered Angus bull, the following is a check list for managing and
effective use of your powerful beef breeding machine.
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
8.
22
When you off load the bull he will be aware that he is in a strange environment. Ensure that he
has clear drinking water, some hay or similar roughage and some molasses meal. This will
encourage him to eat and drink after his journey from the sale yard\breeder's farm to your farm.
If he was purchased on a sale, offer him some mixed ration (eg Voermol SB100 with maize) for a
period of at least one month. You can decrease the amount of feed each day from 15kg to say 5kg.
A sudden break in nutrition ie full ration to nothing will have a bad effect on the bull and possibly
his ability to breed.
Ideally when you off load the bull keep him close to your homestead and\or sheds. This will
enable you or another responsible person to check daily on the bull's health.
Within the first two days of arrival, it may be a good time to treat him with a pour on remedy to
decrease his tick load.
Ensure that the breeder supplies you with his pedigree certificate with breeding values and of
great importance that he is transferred into your name. Also ensure that you are in possession of
his DNA certificate.
Once you are satisfied that the bull has settled down under your local conditions you could turn
him out to the veld (after one month) either with animals (pregnant females and\or oxen) or into
the bull herd.
Introduction into the latter could be tricky as he would have to establish his position in the ranking
order.
If the bull was purchased six months in advance of the breeding season it would be prudent to
fertility test him a month prior to the breeding season along with all your other bulls.
9.
10.
11.
12.
13.
14.
15.
16.
Remember, if the bull gets sick, treat him immediately. Spermatogenesis (the production of new
sperm) takes 65 days. So, if he is sick he could be out of action for nearly two months.
If he is to be used in a breeding herd of heifers, it is acceptable to turn him in with other young
bulls. The breeding ratio (bull to female) should be 1 : 15.
If he is going to be used in the main cow breeding herd, attempt to have a range of ages – not all
old senior or all young junior bulls. If so, they will spend time trying to establish their pecking
order. Therefor ideally for a 100 cow herd have either a 2 year old, 3 year old, 4 year old and 5 year
old or
2 x 2 year olds
1 x 4 year old
1 x 6 year old bulls; the 6 year old could be viewed as the senior bull.
Once the bulls have been turned into the breeding herds, check them at least daily for the first
week to ensure they are mating cows. You may also look for any sickness (any fever can harm
spermatogenesis) as well as physical injury – sore foot, hip, hurt penis, swollen testicles, etc.
If the bull suffers any injury or is sick, withdraw him immediately to the homestead\shed for test
and treatment. Replace him (if possible) with a bull of similar age.
Monitor the breeding activity of your bulls on a daily basis to ensure maximum breeding capacity.
In such a manner, you will achieve a high conception and therefore calving percentage in the next
calving season.
Once the bulls have completed the breeding season turn them back into one bull camp (there will
be fighting to re-establish their pecking order) or into similar age group camps (where likewise
there may still be some fighting to establish pecking order).
An Eastern Cape farmer has successfully used a donkey jack in his bull herd over the past 8 years.
The donkey stops any fighting and this young farmer has not lost any bulls due to fighting.

geregistreerde Angusbulle groot sukses.
Angus-bulle bied. Daarmee saam kom egter ook
die versoeking wat ’n beesboer homself laat
afvra: “Maar hoekom moet ek weer ’n
geregistreerde Angus-bul koop?
speengewigte as sommige Angus-stoetdiere. Ek
het nou die dag my buurman by die koöperasie
raakgeloop en hy vertel my van dieselfde
ondervinding!”
dompel. As die gemiddelde speengewigte van
ses Suid-Afrikaanse beesrasse vergelyk word,
toon die Angus ’n beter gemiddelde speengewig
en beter gemiddelde daaglikse gewigstoename
in fase C-toetse as enige ander beesras wat meer
as 1 000 diere aan prestasiemeting onderwerp
(sien Tabel ).

As ’n rasegte Angus so goed presteer, dink wat die
Angus met jou kruisteelprogram sal regkry.
’n Baster groei vinniger as ’n rasegte dier. Hy is
meesal vroeër geslagsryp en maak jou as boer
trots en opgewonde. Die rede daarvoor is die
natuurlike verskynsel van heterose of
basterkrag.
Hy is nóg vis nóg vlees. Hy is
’n baster. Hy het nie erfdwang nie. Hy teel rond

ABDUL KADER TAYOB
Rondebosch, Mookghopong
Mr Abdul Tayob is a businessman in Mookghopong and
owns the farm Rondebosch, bordering on the Nyl river.
Abdul had a lifelong ambition to farm, especially in the
bushveld and from an early age, he had a great affinity for
animals. When heart and ability meet such a dream is
normally realised and so it was for Abdul Tayob.
Abdul bought Rondebosch in 2001, 800 hectare in extent.
He established bloubuffel pastures, some game as well as
developing a commercial Brahman herd. His enthusiastic
manager is Mr Jan Lebese.
In 2009 he was identified as a participant for the Limpopo
IDC Angus\Nguni project. He received 30 Nguni cows, two
Angus bulls as well as an Nguni bull. The herd currently
consists of 54 Nguni cows.
Abdul's motto for successful farming is: “Hard work and
honesty ensure you are a winner.”
The accompanying pictures bear testimony of the quality

2014 FREE STATE ANGUS CLUB TOUR
MARCH 4\5, 2014
John Boulle - Angus Breed Director
On a cool Tuesday morning, 4th March, twenty five interested persons gathered at Homerule farm of
Brian and Maria Angus, Woodview Angus stud, Arlington, central Free State. This was the
commencement of the Free State Angus club tour.
Woodview staff held two heifer herds on the picturesque lawns of the homestead, whilst others held
the Angus cowherd and others the Red Angus cowherd. Tour participants had the opportunity to view
these cows and their calves, as well as the younger generation of heifers. Many of the cows, black and
red, are to be on offer at the 17th production sale celebrating 50 years of Angus breeding on Saturday,
April 12th.
A sumptuous breakfast was provided by Maria and the tour left on time for the next appointment.
The next farm to visit was that of Hendrik and Janene Botha of Ananiel Landgoed, Marquard. The
touring party was loaded on a 3 ton truck and taken to view an excellent herd of first calvers. Of
interest was the removal of two sets of twins with their dams which would allow for extra attention to
be given to them. We then looked at another herd of autumn calvers which were running on Smuts
Finger grass. Hendrik uses this pasture type in the summer and a combination of rested veld and\or
maize stover for winter grazing.

40
Clean up bull at Waterval with cow wearing bell is on right.
Hendrik also runs a small feedlot which was viewed and we lastly stopped at his bull battery of long
bodied, well-muscled Angus and some Brangus bulls.
Next door to Ananiel Landgoed were excellent commercial cows and calves of Rias Froneman. He
initially bought Angus bulls to use on Afrikaner cows from Hannes Muller, original Angus breeder in the
Marquard area. These cows were an excellent example, like Ananiel Landgoed, of the continued use
of good quality, registered, performance selected Angus bulls on crossbred cows.
From here the touring party went to Bella Vista Boerdery, home of Hentie and NJ Kruger. After a
sumptuous steak lunch, we viewed their stud heifers and his own-bred clean up Angus bull in the
mature cow herd.
The last port of call was Embryo Plus Quarantine station at Winburg. Dr Johan van der Merwe
explained to us all what had been done at this embryo facility and what was in the pipeline. Interesting
was to see the time honoured Mequatling Jewel, now 16 years old. This is sure tribute to the longevity
of the Angus breed.
We then journeyed in the pouring rain to Mequatling, home of Philip and Vicky Barnard. The
camaraderie amongst the tour members was excellent and included a steak fondue.
After breakfast on Wednesday morning, Siebert Vermeulen of Production Services, SA Stud Book ably
assisted by Gerdus de Klerk, gave an excellent talk and demonstration of the ultrasonic scanning of
41
cattle for eye muscle area, marbling and back fat thickness. A lively discussion ensued about the
advantages of scanning and the capturing of such data.
“The proof of the pudding is in the eating” – the adage was applicable when we all went to view the
young 18 month old bulls to be offered on the 2014 Mequatling sale, as well as their half sib heifers. A
prize offered for identifying the bull with the best scanning figures was won by Hentie Kruger of
Bellavista Boerdery.
During mid-morning all tour participants left Mequatling and travelled eastwards to the Lesotho
border. Here we visited Waterval Angusstoet, home of Fikkie and Ann Fick. We viewed a number of
well grown 18 month old bulls which will be sold on his second production sale in September. Various
cow groups were then inspected, one with younger calves and two other groups which had been bred
artificially and were running with the clean-up Angus bulls. The tour came to a conclusion when we
saw his heifer group, also having been bred by AI, now running with a clean-up Angus bull.
We all retired to an excellent sheep on the spit braai cooked by Bismarck Fick and their manager whilst
Ann Fick and her daughter in law, Este, ably managed the other catering held at the hunting lodge of
the Fick family.
Hendrik Jacobs, Chairman of the Society, thanked all tour participants but in particular NJ Kruger for all
his organizational skills as well as the various hosts who ensured we were well fed.

Angus, as

enige moeite uiters goed inpas by sy baie besige gemengde
boerderyprogram maak Angus 'n gemaklike vertakking. Voorts vergelyk
korte duur is. Hier word jaarliks twee totaal verskillende seisoene beleef
ander boere navolg.
Baie geluk, Pierre en Amanda!

THE FEEDING OF
BREEDING BULLS
John P Boulle
Breed Director : SA Angus
feeding as high performance bulls in good
condition will deliver the goods – high
conception rates.
The ideal weight of a breeding bull at 2 years of
age should be 650 – 700 kg. If the bull weighs
230 kg he would have to gain 1 kg\day to reach
the target weight of 650kg (450 kg in 450 days).
Your breeding bull is a large capital investment.
Due to the drive for higher than average
performance values and an exceptional;
phenotype (external appearance) there is an
associated need for a balanced, intensive
feeding programme. Bulls which have already
worked in breeding herds may have the same
basic needs as the cows in those breeding herds.
However, older bulls do have higher
maintenance requirements than younger bulls,
which can be fulfilled by additional licks (and
even additional but limited concentrates) in
order to maintain a reasonable condition for the
working animal. Don't stint on the value of such
52
Protein is the building block of the body. Good
quality and adequate amounts of useful protein
with the correct balance between degradable
and non-degradable protein is critical for the
optimal growth and development of young bulls.
Energy is the fuel which drives growth. Starch
(such as maize) fat, sugar and fibre are the main
energy sources and it is important that these are
fed in balance with protein. When this is
performed, enhanced growth of muscle occurs
which is vital to the beef breeding bull without
affecting the hooves and rumen in a negative
manner. The latter can be seen in laminitis
(lameness and excessive hoof growth) which is
caused by incorrectly balanced rations. Beware
of exclusive use of alternative energy sources
such as chop which are not good sources of
growth but the inclusion at the right amounts
can stimulate the digestive system.
An example is the possible use of the Meadow
product BEEFBOOSTER 18. This is an 18%
protein, ready mixed production lick. Of the
180gr protein in a kilogram of lick, 39% of the
protein is derived from non-protein nitrogen
(NPN) and 61% of the total protein is from
natural protein sources.
The energy is 6,7 megajoule equivalent\kg which
means the bull can achieve maximum carcass
(muscle) growth as opposed to fat deposition.
At all times the bull should have access to good
quality veld\pasture or maize stover\hay in
winter with a Bufferlick. An alternative winter
feeding program could be maize silage fed@1%
of body mass on veld with Beefbooster 18.
Clean drinking water is a necessity for the
functioning of all the living systems (circulatory,
respiratory and digestive) in the breeding bull.
This will enhance the production of high quality
semen at all times.
A rule of thumb of 60 days applies to tone down
bulls which have been over conditioned and to
harden up those which are down in condition
prior to the breeding season. Your breeding bull
should enter the breeding season with body
condition score of 5.5 to 6.5 (on the 9 point
scale).
During the above period all bulls require
exercise. Increased levels of activity may require
a 10 – 15% adjustment to his nutritional levels.

THE FEEDING OF
THE COW HERD
John P Boulle
Breed Director : SA Angus
Fertility and reproduction are by far the most
important characteristics in the commercial beef
cow herd. Optimal production by achieving a
high pregnancy, calving and weaning percentage
can only be reached if the nutrition
requirements of the cow herd are met. It is
critical that as most cow herds run on the veld
here in South Africa, the shortfall of that which is
not found in the grass is met with strategic
supplementation. Internal and external
parasites, disease and weather can also have a
negative effect on the reproduction and
production of the cow herd, but the greatest
contributor to a low production figure is the
deficit of nutritional requirements which leads
to a poor body condition.
In consultation with your ruminant feeding
specialist\salesman, the provision of a lick for
the cow herd should be adjusted according to
the season. A dry spring for example may
necessitate the extension of the winter lick
feeding program. In a wet summer, the cows
may have minimal or no intake at all of the
traditional Fermaphos (P12) and salt.
Management of supplementation is vital as
leaving additional lick in the veld which is not
being utilised is an unnecessary cost factor.
The nutritional needs of the first calving heifers
and cows which endured a harsh winter and have
a low body condition score, is different. Such
animals ideally should run in a separate herd.
These should obtain additional energy (a higher
protein, grain based lick) which will also have a
higher intake per animal per day. This energy
supplement will alleviate the shortfall in body
condition and assist the female to regain
condition for the forthcoming lactation and
reproduction cycle (conception and pregnancy).
Neglect of such requirements often leads to
lower production from these breeding females.
53
The use of additional rumen degradable protein
such as oilcake and non-protein nitrogen (NPN)
sources such as urea can enhance the utilization
of winter grazing. These are normally included in
a winter lick. If you mix your own lick, ensure the
correct mixture by consulting your local animal
scientist or nutritionist. NPN inclusion can up to
a certain level stimulate intake from veld grazing
in comparison to supplements based on natural
protein. The NPN sources are generally cheaper
but again, management of the lick program is
very important.
Finally any feeding programme using licks must
contain the necessary macro and micro minerals
which are important constituents of the diet of a
ruminant. Care should always be taken that the
cow herd does not become too dependent on
the lick supplementation and that they remain
near the feeding area and pursue a minimal

FEEDING OF
REPLACEMENT HEIFERS
John P Boulle
Breed Director : SA Angus
because a poor nutritional program will result in
stunted heifers which will fail pregnancy and to
develop into healthy breeding cows.
All calves require basic nutrition and the
following should be taken into consideration for
the Angus commercial heifer calf –
·
·
·
·
·
Age
Weight
Environmental conditions
Health
Forage availability
Once the above have been determined a
programme can be compiled with your local
animal scientist or nutritionist to determine
the following –
·
·
·
target mass at mating
mating age
veterinary programme
TARGET MASS
A well balanced nutritional program for heifers
post weaning will ensure that they develop to
their full genetic potential. If they do, the value of
using exceptional breeding sires will be realised
54
Target mass may vary according to the
nutritional conditions. This could alter from
mating the heifers at 350kg which could be at 12
or 18 months of age. In order to achieve the
target mass of 350kg at 12 months, the heifers
must grow at 1kg per day from 7 months
averaging 250kg at weaning. The nutritional
programme would have to include a production
lick which would be of high protein value or a
ration of concentrates milled with roughage. At
all times, clean drinking water and an adequate
supply of grazing (veld) are most necessary.
MATING AGE
As the majority of South African ranching areas
are located in a dry environment, the Angus
breed’s fertility may be exploited but with a later
mating age viz 18-24 months of age.
Consequently the nutritional program may be
altered to a lower protein percentage in the lick
also with lower energy values. This would
ensure that the heifers would grow at 400 – 600g
per day which is an acceptable rate. The
provision of the correct nutritional requirements
(macro and micro minerals and trace elements)
would ensure sustained muscle and skeletal
development without the early deposition of fat
in the reproduction organs as well as in the
udder.
The roughage contribution to the nutritional
needs of the growing heifer are most important.
Consideration needs to be given to the following:
All of the above indicates how important it is to
consider and plan a nutritional programme for
growing heifers with a professional animal
scientist. It is important that the genetic
potential of the animal is exploited to the full
with the available feed resources. In such a
manner you would then be maximising your
return on investing in Angus genetics.
· Summer veld grazing. A supplement like
Beefbooster 18 can be fed to sustain
continued growth on green grazing.
· Winter veld grazing. The supplement
Beefbooster 18 may be fed with the
addition of maize silage
· Irrigated pasture. The protein content of
the supplement would have to be reduced
but the energy content increased
· Crop residues. A buffer lick produced by
Meadow can be fed in addition to
Beefbooster18. However, such residues
may not optimize the growth potential of
the heifers meaning a slightly delayed
mating age.
It is advisable to allocate the best possible feed
resources to your heifers as well as the heifers
which calve for the first time. If you do so, you
will reap the benefits of sustained reproduction
in the productive years of such females.

BREEDING
BLACK RED
VACCINATION PROGRAMME
John P Boulle
Breed Director : SA Angus
Traditionally some stock diseases were area bound which allowed stock farmers to selectively
inoculate their cattle. When cattle are moved around the country for a variety of reasons, including ·
·
·
·
·
Movement by speculators;
Natural migration (communal);
Forced migration by drought;
Expansion of farming operation;
Purchase of breeding cattle in one area and
movement to another area, the disease profile
can alter significantly.
As a result veterinarians are now experiencing the surfacing of stock diseases in areas where they
were previously unheard of.
Stud breeders who are nationally well known for their quality animals, attract potential clients from
far and wide to view and possibly purchase animals, mostly at their annual auctions. As a result
diseases and\or parasites may be imported to their farms or alternatively, the stud animal is exposed
to a new disease\parasite challenge to which it was never previously exposed.
A comprehensive inoculation program is an important aid in economic, cost effective beef
production. It is vital that you work and plan such a programme with your local veterinarian who will
also keep you informed of the latest developments and\or outbreak of disease in your area. Also
consult the website www.landbou.com (and your contact is Faffa). A universal inoculation
programme may not be applicable to your area – local adjustments are important. Follow the
instructions to the letter and do not break the cold chain. Hygiene is of vital importance (eg. Sterile
syringes and needles) to ensure that the administration of the vaccines is effective. Failure to adhere
to certain basic principles will mean that the cattle are injected but will not receive full immunity.

INENTINGSPROGRAM
John P Boulle
Ras Direkteur : SA Angus
'n Omvattende basiese inentingsprogram is vandag 'n belangrike hulpmiddel in koste-effektiewe
beesvleisproduksie.
