Early Childhood Program
The Early Childhood Program is housed at Brooks
School Elementary, Cumberland Road Elementary and
Lantern Road Elementary as a part of the HSE school
system. It is an educational program for children ages
three – five with identified special needs.
Eligibility for early childhood services is determined by
the preschool assessment team using a multidisciplinary approach. This team conducts an educational
evaluation prior to the child’s placement in the Early
Childhood Program.
Services in the Early Childhood Program can include,
but are not limited to, early childhood special education, speech/language therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, nursing, transportation, vision, hearing, and family support activities. Collaboration among
therapists is an integral part of the program.
The early childhood classrooms consist of a classroom
teacher, an instructional assistant and eligible students.
Curriculum
The early childhood curriculum is based on developmentally appropriate skills set forth in the Foundations
for Young Children to the Indiana Academic Standards.
This curriculum focuses on the child’s self help, socialemotional, cognitive, communication, fine and gross
motor development. The activities are child-centered,
language rich and experiential. The early childhood
environment is arranged to elicit the most from each
child by selecting a variety of activities that actively
engage the child at his/her developmental level.
The curriculum is further adapted based on each student’s IEP (Individual Education Program). Based on
educational need/support, students may be placed in a
community classroom, a speech only program, a developmental classroom, or a classroom and communications skills program.
Behavior Management
In our early childhood classrooms the following techniques are used for the management of behaviors to
maximize each child’s success (unless otherwise specified by a student’s IEP):
CHOICES – The student is given at least two choices
to help work through a problem.
MODELING – The teacher or instructional assistant
demonstrates the appropriate behavior.
HAND-OVER-HAND – The teacher or instructional
assistant places their hand over the student’s to assist
the student through the activity.
REMOVAL – The student is removed from the activity
and then brought back to the activity after a specified
amount of time.
CONSISTENCY – The teacher and the instructional
assistant will respond the same each time.
POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT – The teacher and the
instructional assistant will praise and encourage the
students throughout the day by catching them being
good.
Clothing and Supplies
An instructional fee of $90.00 per student is required
for materials, supplies, and snacks. Prior arrangements can be made to send in snacks from home for
special celebrations or for a group project.
The following items are needed for each student:
A complete set of labeled clothes to be left at school
(appropriate for the changing weather conditions).
Tennis shoes are appropriate for our program
and highly recommended.
Diapers/Training Pants and Wipes
Box of Unscented Kleenex
Clothing with easy fasteners to allow each student’s
independence
Play Clothes (we can get messy!)
Pull-up pants
Backpack big enough to send home notes, art activities and projects
Progress Reports & Communication
Progress reports are sent home every nine weeks or as
otherwise specified on each student’s IEP. Parents
may receive notes discussing child’s progress and/or
behavior as needed.
A case conference will be held annually to discuss a
student’s overall progress and to develop an IEP for
the next school year. A re-evaluation will be conducted every three years by a multidisciplinary team to
determine continued eligibility. An early evaluation will
be submitted if it is determined that one needs to be
completed sooner.
Home/School communication is vital for continued
successful student programming in the early childhood
program. Please feel free to contact the staff with any
concerns or changes in your child’s status (living arrangements, medical concerns, new phone numbers).
Each week you will receive a newsletter of classroom
activities, schedule, snacks, reminders, and/or information of upcoming events, including field trips and
parent meetings.
Illnesses
If your child is ill, please keep him/her at home. A
child with an oral temperature of 100 degrees
(Fahrenheit) or greater will be sent home from school.
The student must not return to school until they are
fever free (below 100 degrees) for 24 hrs. (without the
benefit of fever reducing medicine.) Since not all contagious illness is accompanied by fever, your child
must also be free from diarrhea and vomiting for 24
hrs. before returning to school. Clinic policies are
available on the HSE web site (www.hse.k12.in.us). If
you do not have internet access and would like a copy
of the clinic handbook, please contact the school
nurse. These policies are created to protect the health
of your child, the other students and the staff.
School Delays
When HSE schools announces a 2 hour delay, all Early
Childhood classes will be cancelled for the entire day.
Teacher Professional Development Days
All professional development days for the school year
are scheduled to fall on Fridays. Therefore, the Early
Childhood classroom schedule will not be affected
Absences
Call transportation at 594-4117 immediately, then report the absence to your child’s teacher. School telephone numbers are listed on the front of this brochure.
Field Trip Guidelines
All volunteers will provide their own transportation to
and from the field trip destination. Siblings may not
attend field trips. All children will ride the bus (unless
parent wishes to transport them). Volunteers need to
notify teachers in writing if they are attending the field
trip.
