COURSE IN EXPERIMENTAL PHYSICS
A report
A Refresher Course in Experimental Physics was held at IISER Mohali
from 8 to 23 July, 2014. The course was sponsored by the three academies
of sciences in India and was exclusively for faculty teaching undergraduate
and postgraduate courses. Thirty two participants from Punjab, Haryana,
Himachal, Rajasthan, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Tamilnadu participated in
the course. There were a total of 24 participants in the course. Apart from
formal participants, four PhD students from IISER Mohali participated as
volunteers in the course. Prof. R. Srinivasan was the course Director and
Prof. Arvind (IISER Mohali) was the course coordinator. Special lectures
were delivered by IISER Mohali faculty and a demonstration session was
conducted by Dr. Marwaha from Khalsa College Chandigarh. A few participants also discussed their ideas about physics experiments.
The course aimed to familiarize the participant teachers with a set of
new experiments that have been developed as a low cost kit by the Indian
Academy of Sciences to cater to the B.Sc. and M.Sc. Levels. About twentyfive experiments at the BSc./M.Sc. level in mechanics, normal modes, Coriolis force, heat, electricity, AC circuits, capacitance and earth, dielectrics,
magnetism, relaxation, phase-sensitive detection techniques using lock-in amplifier, nonlinear dynamics and phase transitions were carried out by participants in the course. All the experiments were aimed at verification of
physical laws and principles and yielded reasonably accurate results. The
experiments developed at IISER Mohali, namely, normal modes in a single
two-dimensional oscillator, parallel plate capacitor, the concept of earth in
electric cricuits and random sampling were also demonstrated. The Refresher
Course was jointly sponsored by the three science academiesList of participants and details of the program are attached.
