LSU TIGERS - Phil Steele

LSU TIGERS
WR Travin Dural
POSITION OUTLOOK FOR 2014
QUARTERBACKS - It seems that every summer Les
Miles says how improved the QB position is and every fall the
results are disappointing. In '12 Zach Mettenberger was supposed to be an upgrade over the Jarrett Lee/Jordan Jefferson
combo that was disappointing in big games. Mettenberger
only played in 5 in '11 (8-11) as 3rd string. Versus Fla, SC and
A&M Mettenberger avg'd 134 ypg (43%, 1-2). He had his best
game vs Alabama (24-35-298) finishing with 2,609 (59%,12-7).
Last spg they added in 2 VHT true frosh in dual-threat Anthony
Jennings (PS#24) and Hayden Rettig (PS#16). Mettenberger
finally lived up to Miles' summer prediction. He recorded the first
B2B 300 yd gms in 6 yrs for an LSU QB (UGA and MSt) and at
midseason was leading the SEC in passing (4th nation) with a
190.1 QBR. In the first 6 he threw for 290 ypg (68%, 15-2!). In
the next 6, it dropped to 224 ypg (61%, 7-6) and he suffered an
ACL vs Ark. Trailing Ark, Anthony Jennings led the gm winning
td drive then started the bowl. In 9 games Jennings threw for
only 181 (44.8%, 1-1). He gives them more mobility. Brandon
Harris (PS#7) was IFS and had 4 td's in the spg gm. No matter
who wins the job, they won't match the accuracy or the deep
ball of Mettenberger (#6DC TEN).
RUNNING BACKS - LSU's backfield is usually 5 or 6
deep with VHT RB's. In '12 the top 4 ret'd but true frosh Jeremy
Hill, who had 2 carries vs BCS tms in the first 6, was the first
RB to top 100 for 3 str gms (SC, A&M, Bama) s/'08 (Charles
Scott) and led with 755 (5.3, 12 td). In '11 the top 4 RB's comb'd
for 2,338 (5.3) and in '12 comb for 1,978 (5.1). LY they had to
replace 2 RB's (#6DC). Hill was susp'd for the opener but topped
100 in 4 of his first 6 and had 216 (7.7) in the bowl (MVP). He
finished with 1,401 (6.9, 16 td, #3 rec w/181). Terrence Magee
(PS#33),who is also a Wildcat QB, had 95+ yds 4 times but
only 166 in the other 9 (3rd down back) and finished #2 (626,
7.3). Kenny Hilliard (PS#12) had 800 (5.6) in '11 and '12 comb
and was #4 (310, 4.6) LY. The largest FB in the NCAA might
have been JC Copeland (6'1" 275) who is a solid blk'r while
his bkp, Connor Neighbors, had 92 rec yds (13.1). The top 4
RB's rushed for 2,680 (6.3) but they lose Hill (11 st, #2DC CIN),
Copeland (6 st) and Alfred Blue (2 st, 343, 4.8, #6DC HOU).
They do add in PS#1 true frosh Leonard Fournette.
RECEIVERS - LSU always has receivers with solid size
and speed but spotty QB play has held down their production as
of late. In '11 Rueben Randle (6'4" PS#1) led with 917 (17.3!).
True frosh Odell Beckham was #2 (475, 11.6). In '12 Randle
left early for the NFL (#2DC). Jarvis Landry (PS#2, 4 rec true)
finished #2 w/573 (10.2). Beckham led with 713 (16.6) and
PS#21 Kadron Boone was #3 (348, 13.4). LY the top 4 ret'd.
OFFENSE
Vs Furman, Beckham became the first 1,000 yd rec here s/'03
(Michael Clayton) and Landry (1193, 15.5, 10 td) matched the
feat giving LSU its first ever 1,000 yd rec duo (prog started in
1893). Beckham (1152, 19.5, 8 td) and was #2 in the FBS in
all-purp yds (178 ypg). To say those 2 were the featured WR's
would be an understatement as the next WR was rFr Travin
Dural (PS#65) with 145 (20.7). TY both Beckham (#1DC NYG)
and Landry (#2DC MIA) left early for the NFL and to show how
amazing their depth was James Wright (4 st WR in '12, 0 rec
and 12 ST tkl LY) was drafted as a WR (#7 CIN). It will be tough
to replace their talent and production (understatement of the
year) despite the addition of PS#1 Malachi Dupre.
OFFENSIVE LINE - In '12 LSU appeared to have 104
car sts back (#5 FBS) but the unit was ravaged by inj's and
defections (29 sts lost). As you would expect, the numbers
dropped to 174 ypg rush (4.3, 32 sk). LY they had to replace 2
st'rs then lost LG Josh Williford (19 car st) over the summer so
they had 30 car sts back. This time they lost just 8 sts to injury
and the healthier OL paved the way for 202 ypg rush with their
5.0 ypc the best s/'97 (25 sk). TY the only loss is 2nd Tm SEC
RG Trai Turner (PS#50, 13 st, #3DC CAR) and this could be
the best OL that Miles has fielded (75 car st).
DEFENSIVE LINE - At least 1 LSU DL has been picked
in each of the last 11 drafts. In '11 they had one of their more
veteran units and trimmed down to 90 ypg rush (2.7, 39 sk).
Most of those sks ret'd in '12 with Sam Montgomery (9) and
Barkevious Mingo (8) but LSU "slipped" a little to 102 ypg (3.0,
35 sk) which was #9 in the FBS. LY 3 DL left early for the NFL
and all 3 were drafted in the F/3 rounds. The unit had 0 ret st'rs.
As you would expect, LSU slipped to 143 ypg (3.9, 27 sk). TY
both DT's left early for the NFL in Anthony Johnson (PS#2, 13
st, 35 tkl, 3 sk, 6 tfl, undrafted) and Ego Ferguson (PS#12, 12
st, 58 tkl, 3.5 tfl, #2DC CHI). With 5 of the top 8 back (also lose
DE Jordan Allen, 3 st, 16 tkl, 2 sk), this unit is clearly a lot more
exp'd than the '13 version.
LINEBACKERS - In '12 LSU lost a 2nd Tm SEC LB (#4
tkl'r) and 2 others (9 st, 35 tkl). They then lost Tahj Jones for all
but the bowl (27 tkl '11) leaving them with just 4 LB's that had
taken a snap with the most exp'd being Kevin Minter (PS#29,
11 st, 61 tkl '11). Minter led with 130 tkls (15 tfl, 2nd Tm AA) and
left for the NFL LY (#2DC). They did return their #2 tkl'r Lamin
Barrow (PS#43, 104 tkl) but the next LB tkl'r was #15 Deion
Jones (PS#66, 23 tkl). LY LSU was a little more exp'd than '12.
True frosh Kwon Alexander (PS#7) won a starting job in '12
before inj (2 st, 7 gm). Tajh Jones inj'd his hamstring and that
opened the door for Alexander whose quickness turned some
heads (9 st, #4 tkl'r, 6.5 tfl). Kendell Beckwith (PS#9) had 11 tkls
but could be a star in the making. The one ret st'r, Barrow, was
#1 w/91 (1.5 sk, 4 tfl) and the #2 tkl'r was DJ Welter (PS#64).
TY they lose 3rd Tm AA Barrow (13 st, #5DC DEN) and Tahj
Jones (3 st, 10 tkl) but the Tigers are more exp'd and will stop
their negative def ppg trend the L2Y (11.3, 17.5, 22.0 LY).
DEFENSIVE BACKS - LSU has had some outstanding
DB's incl a pair of eventual Thorpe Award winners teamed at CB
in '10 with Patrick Peterson & Morris Claiborne. In '10 they were
#13 in my PDR and with the emergence of “The Honey Badger”
(Tyrann Mathieu), they finished #2 in '11. In '12 they had to replace
#1DC (6th overall) Claiborne, #3 & #4DC's and Mathieu (#3DC).
Despite having just 1 st'r back, LSU only fell to #10 (56%, 15-18).
LY they had to replace a CB (#5DC) and a 1st Tm AA S (#1DC).
LSU "slipped" to #28 (56.0%, 15-11). Keep in mind, the front 7
was young (only 27 sk). The last 4 starting CB's here whose
elig exp'd are all in the NFL. They ret'd 2 soph's named Jalen
(Collins & Mills) LY at CB but 2 true frosh earned CB starts in
Tre'Davious White (PS#20) and Rashard Robinson (PS#62). Six
diff players st'd at S. TY they lose Craig Loston (10 ST RANK L6Y:
st, t-#6 tkl'r, 3 int, 3 pbu) and Micah Eugene (3 st, 2013 ... #40
33 tkl). LY was a highly unusual season as no LSU 2012 ....#12
DB's were selected to the All-SEC team. That will 2011 ..... #5
2010 ......#2
change in '14 with 6 of the top 8 back.
2009....... #7
SPECIAL TEAMS - Les Miles' Okla St tms 2008 ....#12
('01-'04) finished #3, #18, #3 and #11 in my ST '13 Tm Net Avg:
rankings. The unit continues to be a strong suit for TmP(38.1)...#33
him as in his 9 yrs he's recorded six top 12 finishes. K/O (39.4)...#65
-1
LY they lost their top P (40.7 tm net), K (21-29, L49) +/ -td/blk
and KR (549, 27.5) and had their lowest finish s/'07 OppP(37.5)...#85
at #40.The star was Odell Beckham with 845 (26.4) K/O (38.3)...#46
on KR's, 160 (8.9) on PR's and a 100 yd return of a missed fg
vs UAB. Colby Delahoussaye hit 13-14 fg's (L49) and P Jamie
Keehn avg 41.0 (38.1 net). TY they lose Beckham but are more
exp'd overall and should finish near the top again.
COACHES - Les Miles replaced Nick Saban here in '05 and
did something that no LSU HC had ever done, tally B2B DD win
seasons. He then led LSU to a Nat'l Title in his 3rd season and
took them back to the title game in '11 (AP COY). Prior to LSU
Miles took Okla St to 3 str bowls (1 bowl prev 12Y). Second
year OC Cam Cameron was an NFL OC for 10Y (BAL '08-'12
& SD '02-'06) as well as a HC in both the NFL (MIA '07) and
college (Ind '97-'01). John Chavis is in his 25th season as a DC
spending the L/5 here w/14 yrs at Tenn ('95-'08).

PHIL’S FORECAST
In the 111 years prior to Les Miles' arrival, LSU had DD wins just
7 times. He's done it 7 times in his 9 yrs. In '03 my preview was
the only magazine to forecast LSU to even win the SEC West
and they were my #2 Surprise Team and took home a Nat'l Title
despite being #14 in the AP Preseason Poll. In '07, LSU went 10-2
in the reg season with both losses in OT but after knocking off
Tenn in the SEC Title game, got to the Nat'l Title game and won
it again. Surprisingly the Tigers were just 8-5 and 9-4 the next
2 yrs but finished 11-2 (#8) in '10. In '11 after beating Bama on
the road in OT, LSU beat UGA 42-10 in the SEC Title gm but this
time Bama shut them out, 21-0 in the Nat'l Title game and they
finished #2. In '12 they would have been #1 AP but "The Honey
Badger" was susp over the summer and they took a revote (#3).
They had close losses to Fla (finished #9 AP) and eventual Nat'l
Champ Bama then dropped their bowl to Clemson and finished
just 10-3 (#14). LY they lost 11 players early to the NFL draft (12
ret st'rs). They were only #12 AP and picked 3rd in the West by the
media. They opened with a solid performance vs TCU (448-259
yd edge). After a couple of expected wins, they dominated Aub
leading 21-0 at half and won 35-21. They came up a fg short
versus UGA on the road. They only led Miss St 28-26 late in the
3Q but went on a 31-0 run. A banged up Fla came in with a bkp
QB and LSU won 17-6 all'g just 240 yds. QB Mettenberger (15-2
ratio) had 3 int's vs Ole Miss (UM 525-388 yd edge) and UM got
a 41 yd fg with :02 left for the upset. LSU trailed Bama just 17-14
at half but lost by 3 td's. LSU dropped to #18 when they hosted
#9 A&M and had not beat a Top 10 team at Tiger Stadium while
ranked outside the Top 15 s/'95. They dominated A&M 34-10
and Miles had prev said that Tiger Stadium was where "dreams
come to die" and that is what happened to Manziel's Heisman
hopes. LSU was lucky to escape with a win the next week vs
Ark with bkp QB Jennings hitting a 49 yd td pass w/1:15 left.
They got past Iowa 21-14 in the bowl and finished #14. LY LSU
was the first team in SEC history to feature a 3,000 yd passer,
two 1,000 yd rec's and a 1,000 yd RB and unfortunately TY all
4 depart. This is still another strong LSU team and they host
Alabama and are a title contender.
