Monument and form of live
According to an essay by Peter Meyer, the training of architects should first
and foremost relate to the topic of monument. After the monumental had been
denied by modernity, the sixties saw the development of the “New Monumentality” movement. Louis Kahn was also inspired by the history of architecture
and reverted to old values to achieve an architecture of his time. Nowadays,
monuments as described in Aldo Rossi’s “l’architettura della città“ are, in their
pure form, hardly conceivable or sensible. Uses will shift but what remains
fixed is the need to set new landmarks in the city that are outstanding as far
as urban planning or architecture are concerned. This is exactly the aim of
our semester: We are building a market hall/church in Biel/Bienne that is able
to absorb both functions and we will use the concept of the monument. It is
to be a special collective place that allows for intense experiences of space
together with other human beings.
The connection between supporting structures, the shaping of space and
the material manifestation will be of special interest to us. Space, statics and
materials are combined into an infrangible whole and the project, by its strong
presence, will provide the city of Biel/Bienne with a place for encounters. A robust space ensures a “multi-usage” (during the day: market hall, exhibition hall
etc.; during the night: party, church, meditation etc.). Notions such as presence,
resonance, structural logic and expression are among the working concepts
we will be exploring together. We will work together with engineers to give the
project a solid background. Analogue models will be our main working tools.

The world largest manufacturer of wood and bamboo toys is located in
East China near Shanghai/ Ningbo. As social engagement for their employees and to be able to house their guests the company wants to build
up a family holiday resort.
As the company is linked to the material of bamboo and also is owning a
beautiful located bamboo forest near to their research center, the idea
was to create the resort inside the forest by building housing-units out of
bamboo.
The Berne university of applied studies was contact¬ed by the company
and asked to develop prototypes of these housing-units within an architectural design studio.
The rela¬tion to the wood engineers in Biel opens the opportunity to
work in interdisciplinary design teams: architects and wood engineers.
After an introduction in bamboo history and construc¬tion there will be
a 2-week creative work¬shop in China together with members of the
com¬pany and bamboo experts.
After getting to know the material of bamboo and the building site the
groups then will return to Switzerland to develop their concepts for a
housing-unit up to a 1:1 scale.
In a coached student competition we want to find the best 1-2 concepts,
evaluated by a jury of experts and members of the company. These
concepts are then realized in China by the students together with local
carpenters and bamboo craftsmen during a summer¬school of 3 weeks.

Dans la tradition d’architectes et d’ingénieurs constructeurs tel que Konrad
Wachsmann et Heinz Issler, l’atelier met le projet constructif au centre de
ces investigations. L’objectif est de développer un système constructif à
partir d’éléments simples en bois. L’atelier offre un espace de liberté qui
permet d’expérimenter et d’inventer des systèmes constructifs en dehors de
considérations fonctionnels ou urbaines. C’est l’interaction entre la mise en
œuvre d’un matériau et l’expression architecturale qui est exploré.
En construisant et en observant des maquettes expérimentales nous
essayons de comprendre leur potentiel constructif et architectural. Nos
recherches feront aussi bien appel à l’intuition, à travers un travail manuel et
plastique, qu’à l’intelligence analytique à travers un travail d’observation et
de dessin. Dans une première phase d’exploration nous testons le matériau
et son potentiel d’application. Suit une phase d’analyse et de développement qui permet la transition de l’échelle de la maquette vers l’échelle
constructive. Le principe constructif est appliqué à travers des prototypes à
trois échelles différentes : Small, Medium, Big. Ceci permet de vérifier nos
hypothèses et de les faire évoluer à travers un travail de variations.

A travers les notions de densité et usages, l’atelier expérimente le
projet urbain dans une situation réelle. Le travail évoluera autour de
diverses approches de recherches typologiques et morphologiques,

Nous attendons de l’étudiant Master qu’il développe une capacité à

qui sont du domaine de la « non-invention », donc qu’il soit en mesure de faire usage de précédents afin de s’inscrire dans la culture

L’urbanisation comme un phénomène généralisé, l’homogénéisation
accélérée des valeurs issues de la «globalisation», l’uniformisation des
modes de production et de vie créent grandes similitudes entre les agglomérations d’un bout à l’autre du globe. Ces phénomènes conditionnent le contexte dans lequel nous devons travailler aujourd’hui. La ville
semble pareille partout, elle est aussi plus complexe que jamais. Cette
complexité résulte de la fin des possibilités d’extension territoriale des
villes et de la nécessaire cohabitation de composantes hétérogènes
qui en résulte. Elle s’accompagne d’une perte de lisibilité et de sens de
la ville et de son espace vital comme cadre de vie, de développement et
comme référence culturelle. Cette perte semble affecter davantage les
périphéries que les centres qui deviennent, paradoxalement, porteurs
exclusifs d’identité au détriment d’une périphérie pourtant indissociable de celle-ci. Cette dernière a pourtant aussi sa singularité, un
caractère et un code génétique. Le découvrir et en valoriser les traits
par des propositions de projets est un enjeu de taille. Il va occuper
l’atelier ce semestre au travers d’un travail de projet à l’échelle d’un
îlot urbain à Chêne-Bourg, aux portes de Genève. Le programme portera principalement sur une mixité de logement et d’activités, avec une
réflexion sur les évolutions perceptibles des usages susceptibles de
faire évoluer la forme bâtie.

The theory seminar is inspired by the title of Descartes’ famous «Discours
de la méthode» (1637) and deals – also in a historically oriented perspective – with the human, alltoo- human cognitive interest in «the» method. An
established, methodical process is a precondition for the verifiability of the
resulting findings and is considered a criterion for the scientific approach.
Theory is a controlled reflection and construction of methods that accompanies the practice of architectonic design and verifies the possibilities
and limits of its ability to be systematized and taught. Theory thus helps
architecture, as a university subject, to hold its own in the competition for
research projects funded by third-party grants. In this context, research
is part of the design and thus of the practice of architecture. Architecture
meanwhile need not invent itself anew but can look back self-confidently
and hence self-critically on the diversity of design cultures it has spawned
throughout its long history and draw on a rich empirical knowledge of
the interaction, both creative and at the same time fraught with tension,
between method and intuition, whose dynamics can be encountered
wherever strategies and rules for concrete problem solving are sought
creatively and honestly – in the sciences no less so than in the arts. Since
we see a diversity of methods as something to be treasured, our efforts
in this seminar do not aim towards achieving uniformity but towards a
pluralism of methods. On our voyage of discovery we will receive inputs
from many guests.

Architecture, philosophie, psychiatrie, sociologie, ethnologie.
La contenance est un thème proche de l’architecture, où l’on s’occupe de
dimensions, de volumes, de masses, de flux. En comprenant l’architecture
dans le rapport de son espace à l’être humain, la contenance a aussi une
dimension qualitative : ouverture, fermeture, transparence, perméabilité,
protection, contention. En l’élargissant à l’espace des idées, au monde de
l’intelligible et du sensible, la contenance est une fonction d’appropriation :
c’est celle qui nous restitue de façon intelligible un ressenti, qui le contruit.
Dans la psychanalyse, c’est un mode opératoire qui permet à l’analysant de
donner un sens à son identité. Qu’en est-il pour l’architecture, son auteur,
son utilisateur ?
Le module vise à développer:
- Une attitude critique et éthique professionnelle;
- Une prise de conscience de transformations sociétales contemporaines;
- La capacité de comprendre, combiner et appliquer des concepts théoriques;
- Des capacités de développement autonome, autodidacte et autocritique.
A la fin du module l’étudiant aura amélioré son aptitude:
- A évoluer dans un contexte interdisciplinaire;
- A comprendre et questionner un thème sociétal;
- A sélectionner des savoirs et savoir-faire pertinents;
- A utiliser des connaissances acquises dans une pratique architecturale;
- A synthétiser un travail par rapport à ses dimensions interdisciplinaires.

L’idée et la pratique de l’architecture sont inséparables de la représentation : avant toute réalisation, le projet se concrétise sur la base de
représentations qui vont de l’esquisse au plan, alors que la réception de
l’architecture passe, elle-aussi, à travers la représentation mentale de
l’objet architectural et des représentations proprement dites, à savoir
la photographie, le film et les documents de tout genre. L’architecture
est une (dé)monstration qui tend à prendre forme dans les médias, se
muant en (dé)monstrations au deuxième degré. Au plus tard à partir de
la reproductibilité technique de l’œuvre d’art (architecturale), l’image
précède souvent la conception de la future construction même, sans
oublier l’influence toujours plus massive des technologies actuelles de
représentation digitale. Dans un tout autre registre encore, l’activité
architecturale en tant que telle aspire à devenir œuvre sur la base de représentations globales comme le « livre d’architecture », la monographie
ou encore le film d’architecture, soit-il hagiographique ou désacralisant.
Notre séminaire entend présenter ces traductions ou sémioses (Roman
Jakobson) en suivant deux directions : celle qui va de l’architecture à la
représentation ainsi que celle, complémentaire, qui porte de la représentation à l’architecture. Le rôle du dessin, des techniques de représentation (de collage, montage, 3D, de visualisation, etc.), de la photographie,
du film, mais aussi des revues d’architectures, des éditions spécialisées,
des blogs, des expositions et des prix d’architecture seront présentés
par des protagonistes et des spécialistes du domaine de premier ordre.

Le but de ce module est d’offrir à chaque étudiant du temps pour son
propre développement dans le domaine de l’architecture. Il s’agit d’un
apprentissage initié et géré par l’étudiant lui-même.
D’habitude, le processus d’enseignement est très largement contrôlé par
l’école. Les sujets, l’horaire, les méthodes sont choisies à l’avance pour
correspondre à des objectifs pédagogiques établis selon des critères
parfois idéologiques. L’étudiant n’a qu’à suivre. Dans le jointmaster,
pour des raisons didactiques, le contenu est décomposé en une série
de cours ou de modules distincts. Refléxions philosophiques, récits
historiques, pratiques constructives ou discussions de comportements
dans le cadre bâti se succèdent sans rapport immédiat à travers des
discours centrés sur eux-mêmes. On imagine que l’étudiant va retisser
automatiquement ces connaissances disparates : à l’atelier, juste avant
les examens ou, beaucoup plus tard, dans la pratique.
Le module profile search constitue un renversement fondamental :
l’étudiant construit son propre enseignement architectural selon ses
désirs, ses rythmes, ses dérives, … Le sujet est la constitution d’une
vision architecturale personnelle, au-delà et en dépit d’idées reçues
dans l’enseignement institutionnel. C’est la continuation ou le début
d’un travail individuel qui, idéalement, se prolongera dans la pratique
professionnelle.

The eventful history of the Spanish capital of culture is also reflected in its
cityscape. The visitor has ample choice for sightseeing, from the golden age
of the Habsburg family through the Belle Époque, Modernism as well as the
real estate boom of the nineties to the architecture in the current crisis. It is the
perfect place to experience architecture and urban development in their sociohistorical context. Miguel Fisac, Francisco Javier Sáenz de Oiza, Alejandro de
la Sota, Rafael Moneo, Jean Nouvel and Herzog & de Meuron are only some
of the names associated with buildings in Madrid. However, the diversity of the
city is also influenced by a rich cultural milieu and lively literary scene, by an
active civic movement, by a passion for tango, football and the cinema.
- During a stroll together around the city, we will gather first impressions.
- In the day workshops from Sunday to Tuesday, we will examine architectonic, urban and cultural topics.
- During the in-depth seminars from Wednesda to Friday, we will address a
concrete problem and outline scenarious, concepts and possible solutions.
- At the evening anchor meetings, there will be specific contributions in
plenary that will serve as introduction to the city from various perspectives. The anchor meetings also provide a plateform for exchanges and for
discussing experiences.

Architects express themselves not only through their architectural structures
but also through texts, plans, images and diagrams that document the buildings. This also includes making use of graphical design concepts. By way of
inspiration or reference, they often sketch out tectonic, materials-related or

In this module, we will design and produce a publication. The object of the
book is an extensive archive of graphical patterns that was established last
term at the “Jointmaster of Architecture” in Burgdorf using the open-source
programming language “Processing”. This richly illustrated publication aims
to serve as a source of inspiration for architects, designers and graphic designers. Students will attend to the planning and realisation of the publication,
which requires reflection on format, structure, layout, typography, binding
and cover. Everyone participating will also gain insights in the technical printing process and possible channels of distribution. Invited guests working
in the art of making books will complement the program. Participation from
students who have already completed the course “Typewritten Drawings” is
very much appreciated. Other students are also cordially welcome.

Based on our data-controlled Laser, Cutter, Printer, Miller and Scanner
we explore how our CADrawings can be transformed to control building
processes. The first goal is a technical enabling. Central interest is the

Taking basic definitions of the term ‘ambiguity’ as we find them in
philosophical dictionaries and in William Empson’s most scrupulous and
erudite essay »Seven Types of Ambiguity« (2nd. Ed. London 1947), we will
analyse and discuss the concept of ambiguity in theoretical writings on
architecture renowned for its use (Venturi, Rowe & Slutzky, et al.). We
will study some of the various ways the articulation of ambiguity can occur in architecture from different epochs, among them not only the usual
‘postmodern’ suspects but also Kahn, van Eyck, Le Corbusier and further
back in time to examples from the discourse on architecture in the late
18th / early 19th century (Schinkel and the reception of architecture in
early German Romantics) and Baroque (Borromini).

The inclusion of image processing techniques in the production of architecture has become essential. A concise representation of the design as a picture is now part of any successful architectural work, whether it is for lead
acquisition or project marketing. Digital imaging methods allow the creation
of images that are visibly almost no different than a photograph. However,
what other visual strategies and aesthetics can be applied with the help of
digital image techniques – visual strategies, which not only strive for the
most exact implementation of photographic representation ? In the first part
of the module various image processing techniques will be presented. Individual image approaches, visual language and compositional strategies from
the field of architecture, fashion and fine art photography will be presented.
Students will then develop a consistent series of collages with pre-defined
basic elements that will be inserted into image environments.
Through the mediation of various digital image processing techniques and
skills acquired from the lecture series and preliminary practice, students will
develop an expanded range of image approaches. The goal is to explore the
possibilities and the potential of digital imaging techniques.

Rendering programs can continuously do more and offer a range of settings
that are becoming increasingly difficult to master. To keep track requires a
lot of discipline, the risk of getting lost is too great. This especially applies
to architectural visualization, when image scenes are complex and do not
consist of only one single object. Time is often lacking for the successful
implementation of sophisticated lighting. Users solve this dilemma by using
prefabricated rendering and lighting settings anchored in the program. The
resulting images hardly differ from one another in their image aesthetics.
The above considerations are the starting point of this module : the goal is
to replicate selected scenes from films in the program. They are still scenes
with a manageable number of objects. After analyzing the images and transmitting them into and replicating within the software environment, the focus
will be on lighting and the image haptic to be created.
Students will learn the main configuration options for light, materials and
rendering settings for the Cinema 4D software in a compact and short introduction. The visual perception of the students will be enhanced through the
targeted development of light and surface skills.

Derrière les incessantes remises à jour des théories et concepts se dressent d’importants monuments ethnographiques qui constituent la matière
première de ces généralisations théoriques. Ces sociétés nous parlent
de sociétés sinon disparues du moins fortement perturbées, métissées,
mondialisées ou enfermées dans des réserves. Comme toutes les sociétés
du passé, même récent, elles ont été et sont l‘objet de spéculations : si
l’archéologue et l’historien ne possèdent jamais toutes les pièces du puzzle
qu’ils tentent de recomposer, l’anthropologue lui s’appuie aussi sur des
informations lacunaires, à cause de ses propres limites et de celles de ses
informateurs. Cependant à la différence des précédents il a vu, il a éprouvé
(vécu) et il a rendu compte d’une façon ou d’une autre (description, enquête,
notes, photographies, enregistrements, films). Cette spécificité même
de l’anthropologie – l’observation directe, et en principe participante – a
changé, puisque les sociétés observées sont toujours vivantes ou survivantes, mais ont été profondément et rapidement perturbées, même s’il est
vrai que les sociétés n’ont jamais été totalement isolées les unes des autres
et donc que la pureté culturelle ou ethnique est une illusion. Que l’on célèbre
ou déplore ce métissage est une autre affaire : il constitue sans doute un des
champs privilégiés de l’anthropologie d’expression française contemporaine
: ethnicité, identités, branchements, migrations, minorités, etc.

Les représentations architecturales produites par la maquette, le dessin, ou
la photographie ne répondent que partiellement à la complexité de la ville
contemporaine. En effet, si ces modes de représentation nous permettent de
saisir des paramètres statiques, ils sont beaucoup moins efficaces dans la
saisie et la représentation des éléments dynamiques qui occupent l’espace.
Cette dynamique qui se traduit au quotidien par des flux visuels et sonores
(véhicules, piétons, vélos, lumières, données climatiques, etc.) engendre des
transformations dans notre perception du lieu, mais également dans notre
façon de penser l’espace. Face à cette donnée, nous proposons d’utiliser la
vidéo comme outil d’analyse et de projet. La vidéo nous permettra de nous
immerger au cœur des friches industrielles de Fribourg. D’en réaliser un
relevé complet. Puis, grâce aux possibilités du montage et du collage numériques, d’établir la qualité de ces territoires délaissés et de préciser le rôle
qu’ils peuvent jouer dans le développement futur de la ville de Fribourg.
Ce travail prend pour référence des réflexions existantes sur la place des
territoires marginalisés dans la fabrication de la ville. Il s’appuie entre autres
sur l’ouvrage Manifeste du Tiers Paysage de Gilles Clément (2004) et sur
l’oeuvre Reality Properties: Fake Estates (1973) de Gordon Matta-Clark.

A partir de l’analyse d’une donnée (scène de film de 10 secondes hors de
son contexte), que les étudiants devront décrire et interpréter, ils concevront
et réaliseront un film d’1 à 2 minutes, qui prolonge et réinvente le contexte de
la scène de départ, à l’aide d’images vidéo personnelles, de sonorités et de
modélisations 3D.
L’enseignement prendra la forme de travaux dirigés.
Les étudiants seront accompagnés par deux professeurs durant 3 semaines
en continu.
A partir d’une scène de film, les étudiants composeront un environnement à
l’aide du montage vidéo (prise de vue et / ou images de références) et de la
modélisation 3D. Ces deux pratiques se croiseront.
Les étudiants utiliseront les outils vidéo (caméra, logiciel de montage), appareil photo, appreil de prise de son et logiciels de modélisation 3D.
Pour atteindre les compétences visées, l’étudiant doit appendre à travailler
en équipe, sur une problématique complexe et pluridisciplinaire. L’étudiant
doit s’approprier les techniques de montage vidéo et de modélisation 3D,
pour développer un regard et un discours personnels à partir de cette nouvelle association d’outils.Participation active aux cours et aux excursions.
Les étudiants doivent être en possession d’un ordinateur portable équipé des
logiciels suivants : 1 logiciel de montage (Final Cut Pro ou Première Pro), 1
logiciel de modélisation 3D (Archicad, Autocad, VectorWorks, Blender) et de
Photoshop. Les logiciels et le matériel de prise de vue sont fournis.

Ce cours à option est destiné aux étudiant-e-s qui n’ont pas suivi de
cours de construction en Bachelor et qui souhaitent approfondir leurs
connaissances dans la matière.
Après sélection d’un projet de concours non réalisé, l’étudiant-e développera le projet sous forme de détails constructifs tout en respectant ou
en remettant en question le projet choisi.
Il s’agira d’étudier la question de l’enveloppe, de la toiture, de la
rencontre du bâtiment avec le sol et du développement d’un élément
particulier du projet.
Capacité à développer un lien entre le projet et la construction en passant par les outils suivants
- Sélection de projet de concours (le jour du 1er cours)

- Représentation en CAO des détails à développer, échelle de travail
