MDM Case Study
Industry: Pharma
MDM implementation helps major Bio-Pharmaceuticals
Research firm Optimize Business
Processes and Gain
Operational Efficiency.
Background
This company is one of the world’s largest providers of bio-pharmaceuticals with over $20 billion in sales revenue. They span
the entire value chain of a medicine from discovery, early and late stage development to manufacturing and distribution,
and the global commercialization of primary care, specialty case medicines that save and transform lives. The company
employs more than 50,000 conducting business in approximately 100 countries with manufacturing facilities around the
globe.
The Challenges
The company had multiple channel systems containing similar types of data, yet the data was represented differently in
different locations. The company’s Master Data Management (MDM) vision was to create a single “system of record” to
manage major entities such as Health Care Professionals (HCP); Health Care Accounts (HCA); Managed Care Accounts (MCA)
and Reference entities for MDM consumption.
The MDM vision was to unify, cleanse, standardize, de-duplicate, and govern master data from more than 30 internal and
external channels. This would enable a 360-degree view of its core business entities, transactional information, and
integrated data for business analytics. The inability to get this critical information was affecting the overall time to achieve the
business goals.
The company’s existing 3rd party MDM solution was inadequate to provide a single view of information about all of its
customer segments such as Health Care Professionals; markets; hospitals; outlets, federal accounts, consumers, patients, etc.

The Solution
The Informatica MDM 9.5 solution was chosen to be the best fit to the current data model. Informatica MDM 9.5 was selected to
replace the existing 3rd Party MDM solution to provide scalability to support major current initiatives. The solution was deployed to
provide a trusted, comprehensive view of customers to the company in support of its CRM initiatives. The approach adopted was to
build entities mastering on:




Health Care Professionals (HCP) – Physicians; Hospitals; etc.,
Health Care Account (HCA) – Federal Accounts; Consumers; Patients etc.,
Managed Care Account (MCA) – Managed markets; Outlets
Reference entities for MDM consumption
Softpath System was brought in to help implement the Informatica solution stack of MDM 9.5.1 solution to address the challenges.
The process of modelling the data and application was:










Based on the new architecture, reconfiguring to optimize the applications
Segregating core and extended attributes to simplify core data model
Introducing new method for modeling addresses
Data profiling to understand and avert data quality issues upstream
New mechanisms by which channels can integrate with HCM
Evaluating and improving process by which new sources onboard
Utilizing external match functionalities built into Informatica MDM
New mechanisms by which channels can integrate with HCM

Utilizing external match functionalities built into Informatica MDM
The implementation steps to create a single view of master data was:






Load master data from internal & external channels data provider through the batch process.
The master data from all sources was cleansed, standardized, de-duplicated, transformed, matched and merged as the “Single version of truth”,
or “golden record”.
Identified and mapped master data attributes loaded between customer master and new data provider from various channels
Identified and mapped “List of Values” meeting with data governance loaded into customer master
Standardized Addresses with use of best common addresses rule priority
Publish the “Single version of truth” with any of the three publish layers as
Layer-1 : Ability to publish any profile
Layer-2 : Ability to publish clients best of breed information with the highest filtration for profile
Layer-3 : Ability to publish information appropriate to downstream channels
The Results
The company’s Informatica MDM 9.5 solution deployed to replace their current 3rd Party MDM has enabled the following benefits:








Streamlines the business processes caused by poor quality data
Gains a single enterprise-wide 360 degree view of Health care entities
Stores the data in a much more normalized form
Provides a uncluttered, consistent and unique view of MDM base objects
Decouples the application and user access of the data from the underlying tables
Enhances ability for regulatory compliance
Provides better customer insight and interactions to provide better customized services
Improves operational efficiency
