inviting applications for the position of:
Independent Junior Group Leader in Computational or Mathematical Systems Biology

The MDC is a biomedical research institute dedicated to interdisciplinary research in the
areas of (i) Cardiovascular and Metabolic diseases, (ii) Cancer and (iii) Function and
Dysfunction of Nervous System. The MDC is a member of the Helmholtz Association of
National Research Centers, supported by the Federal Government of Germany and the
Senate of Berlin. In addition to disease focused research the MDC established major
expertise in the field of Systems Biology since launching the Berlin Institute for Medical
Systems Biology (BIMSB) in 2008. BIMSB will continuously recruit scientists on all levels in
the next years and eventually move to a new research building in the center of Berlin.
We are seeking applications for an Independent Junior Group Leader Position from
outstanding computational scientists or mathematicians with demonstrated potential in gene
regulation, including (but not limited to) RNA biology, epigenetics, genetic variability and/or
modelling of biological networks. Applicants using computational and/or theoretical
approaches are encouraged to apply. A track-record in highly successful doctorate and postdoctoral research is anticipated.
Successful candidates will conduct independent research and be encouraged to engage in
collaborative projects with experimental and computational groups at the BIMSB, MDC and
other research institutions in Berlin. We offer funding for 5 years with possible extension of
four years, staff of one postdoc, one PhD student, one technician (or equivalent), as well as
fixed annual consumables, administrative support and opportunities to recruit additional
students from the MDC’s PhD or Fellowship Programs.
Prerequisite for this position is an excellent scientific background (PhD and postdoctoral
experience) in theoretical biology. Experience in integrating with experimental groups and
solving complex scientific questions is essential. The salary will be offered according to the
German public salaries TVöD-Bund (Ost).
