First Anniversary of Deceased Donor (Cadaver) Transplantation
Program at JIPMER – Press Release:
The deceased donor (cadaver) transplantation program at JIPMER completed one year,
in December 2014. The first deceased donor transplantation at JIPMER and in the state of
Puducherry was performed on 5th December 2013 when Mr. Jegadeesan, a resident
of Puducherry was found to be brain dead following a two wheeler accident and his wife Mrs
Jayanthi expressed her wish to donate his organs. Following this, family members of nine brain
dead patients came forward to donate organs at JIPMER and we have successfully
harvested kidneys and eyes (corneas) from them and transplanted to patients at JIPMER. The
latest deceased donor transplantation at JIPMER was performed on 15th November 2014. Mr.
Sankathamizhyan @ Mathi, a 27 year old engineer, hailing from Mailam near Tindivanam
sustained severe head injuries from a two wheeler accident and was found to be brain dead.
His brother Mr Sachithanantham @ Thomas and other family members came forward to
donate his organs. His kidneys and corneas were harvested and transplanted to two patients
with kidney failure and two patients with blindness.
So far eighteen patients with kidney failure who had no kidney donor in the family and
18 patients with blindness have benefitted from the deceased donor transplantation program
at JIPMER.
Organ donation is a life saving act and organs donated by a brain dead person can save
many lives. The family members of the deceased donors showed immense maturity and
generosity while coming forward to donate organs, despite an occasion of immense loss and
grief, from the demise of their loved ones.
The deceased donor transplantation program is a complex process involving multiple
departments in the hospital, hospital administration as well as the police departments of

department, the OT and ICU nursing staff, dialysis technicians, blood bank, panel of experts for
