First Anniversary of Deceased Donor (Cadaver) Transplantation Program at JIPMER – Press Release: The deceased donor (cadaver) transplantation program at JIPMER completed one year, in December 2014. The first deceased donor transplantation at JIPMER and in the state of Puducherry was performed on 5th December 2013 when Mr. Jegadeesan, a resident of Puducherry was found to be brain dead following a two wheeler accident and his wife Mrs Jayanthi expressed her wish to donate his organs. Following this, family members of nine brain dead patients came forward to donate organs at JIPMER and we have successfully harvested kidneys and eyes (corneas) from them and transplanted to patients at JIPMER. The latest deceased donor transplantation at JIPMER was performed on 15th November 2014. Mr. Sankathamizhyan @ Mathi, a 27 year old engineer, hailing from Mailam near Tindivanam sustained severe head injuries from a two wheeler accident and was found to be brain dead. His brother Mr Sachithanantham @ Thomas and other family members came forward to donate his organs. His kidneys and corneas were harvested and transplanted to two patients with kidney failure and two patients with blindness. So far eighteen patients with kidney failure who had no kidney donor in the family and 18 patients with blindness have benefitted from the deceased donor transplantation program at JIPMER. Organ donation is a life saving act and organs donated by a brain dead person can save many lives. The family members of the deceased donors showed immense maturity and generosity while coming forward to donate organs, despite an occasion of immense loss and grief, from the demise of their loved ones. The deceased donor transplantation program is a complex process involving multiple departments in the hospital, hospital administration as well as the police departments of Puducherry and Tamil Nadu. The deceased donor program at JIPMER has met with success because of excellent support from the JIPMER administration with direct personal involvement from Dr TS Ravikumar, Director, Dr J Balachander, Medical Superintendent and Dr MJE Ambroise, Technical Consultant, JIPMER. The dept. of Anaesthesiology and critical care, Nursing department, the OT and ICU nursing staff, dialysis technicians, blood bank, panel of experts for brain death certification have all come together and worked as a team with single minded dedication, for the success of the program and to save lives. The transplant coordinator Mr. AK Saravanan played a key role in coordinating the whole process and completing the medico-legal formalities. Dr Prasanna Bidkar, Associate Professor of Anaesthesiology and Critical Care and Dr Venkatesh Madhugiri, Associate Professor, Neurosurgery, coordinated the brain death certification and care of the brain dead donor. The kidney transplantation team under the leadership of Dr Sreejith Parameswaran, Associate Professor of Nephrology and Dr K. Muruganandham, Associate Professor of Urology organized the kidney transplantations. The police departments of Puducherry and Tamil Nadu cooperated in a timely manner in completing the medico-legal formalities of all the cases. JIPMER is organizing a function to mark the first anniversary of the program, to felicitate the families who came forward to donate the organs of their loved ones as well as to felicitate the faculty and staff at JIPMER who contributed towards the success of the program, on 12th December 2014 (Friday) from 2:30 to 4:30pm at Seminar Hall, SS Block, JIPMER.
