You have won the latest volunteer draw. Your voucher for a “Free Entrée”
from the Fern Café can be picked up from Reception.
While Susan would say and have you believe that
she retired from her volunteer role at the end of
December, there’s no denying that over the past
month she continued to play a strong supporting
role, while turning over the reins for the scheduling
of Coffee Express and Fern Café afternoon
volunteers. In her seven years as a Scheduler, Susan
Susan
built a strong rapport and shared confidences with
dozens of volunteers, from all walks of life, as a warm, friendly voice on the
other end of the phone. On countless occasions she was able to call upon
the regulars and spares on the roster to ‘save the day’ – and as often as not,
the volunteer on the other end was as happy to be of service as Susan was,
securing them to fill that shift.
We thank you so very much Susan, for fulfilling such a vital role with
positivity and persistence. Your contributions and commitment have helped
to solidify things a great deal! Should you miss the sound of your phone ringing,
know that you can give us a call – or better yet, pay us a visit at the Centre!
All the best to you, in this next chapter of your life!
If you would like to be next month’s winner please fill out a yellow chit
and enter it into the draw bucket in Joanne’s office after your next
volunteer shift at Monterey Recreation Centre.
VOLUNTEER and Help Make a Difference Here!
Monterey volunteers are Monterey members, working together - as a team,
delivering friendly customer service and helping to foster the strong sense
of community that everyone enjoys. The Centre is richer for the many
individuals who share their time, talents and passions,
enriching the overall Monterey experience for everyone.
The roles and contributions of our volunteers are as varied as
our membership itself. There are positions and roles that have long been
established and remain essential (this includes a number of positions in
the Fern Café and others supporting the food services area) and, of course,
there are volunteer opportunities yet to be identified and put in to practice.
We would love to have you get involved with your Centre!
Joanne Donohue, the Programmer for Volunteers, would be happy
to discuss your interests and help you find the right volunteer role!

ASSOCIATION NEWS
From your President, Ena Cooke,
Welcome to members of the Oak Bay Seniors Activity
Association & visitors! Buy your tickets for the Glittery Affair,
Thursday, February 19th featuring the Bob Morrison Orchestra
and Miranda Sage! Put on your best clothes and let’s have a
splendid time as we did last year! Chef Ron has promised a
mouthwatering dinner!
Everyone had a great time at the Burns Celebration in January
with the magic of haggis, roast beef and the Scottish music by
Mary Ross and Ian Rothnie. Many thanks indeed to Ron, Ena,
Elizabeth and the piper who also addressed the Haggis! Burns
lives and is celebrated each year around the world and
we enjoy many of his poems which still stir our blood!
Don’t forget to bring your donated items for the February
Rummage Sale Saturday, February 28th 9am-1pm - items will be
received Monday, February 23rd onwards. Thanks to all those
who will be sorting, organizing and working for their centre!
Oak Bay Seniors Activity Association’s (OBSAA’s) AGM is
Monday, March 9th. Please plan to attend and vote for the
Board of the Elected Executive Members who will be
responsible for the running of our OBSAA for the next year!
These positions are for the President, Vice-President, Treasurer
and Secretary. All four people must be prepared and able to
continue the work of the upgrading, our ongoing activities and
assisting all our OBSAA clubs which requires qualifications,
ability and experience!
Our year-end fiscal figures are almost complete and the Audit
Committee is hard at work. The auditors’ report will be given at
the AGM by Walter Gordon and David McAlary. Many thanks
to them for all their work! Final year-end copies will be available
at the AGM and you can see what your OBSAA has achieved
during the past year.
Have you enjoyed our Free Talks which the Good Health
Committee arranges? Andrew Weaver was well received in
January and this month we have Murray Rankin! In the lab
(without computers) you can update & learn about safe Food
Handling. See page two of the Oak Leaves for the Free Talks.
Again we give thanks to all the staff; OBSAA members who
give their precious time to be the Elected Executive Board; all
seven committee members; club representatives who attend the
OBSAA monthly executive meetings and all those who run the
clubs! All these hard-working people are involved in the
OBSAA decision making process! Grateful thanks also to
Mayor Nils Jensen, Ray Herman, Janet Barclay, Lesley Cobus
and Joanne Donohue.
Please bring your friends for lunch, coffee and goodies to the
friendliest place in Oak Bay! Looking forward to seeing you in
the centre in February!

CLUB NEWS continued from page 5...
The Book Club will meet to discuss
Almost English by Charlotte Mendelson
on February 16th, The Invention of Hugo
Cabaret, a novel in words & pictures by
Brian Selznick on March 16th & The
Children Act by Ian McEwan on April
20th. We meet on the 3rd Monday of
each month at 1pm. We post a brief
summary on the Club Notice Board
shortly after the meeting.
Carpet Bowling: Now that we are all
over the holidays, need some exercise to
wear off all that turkey and goodies? We
meet every Tuesday, 1-4pm in the Garry
Oak Room. Come have a few laughs
and meet some new friends. We have a
lot of fun!
Chinese Brush Painting: We have
appreciated having presentations by
experienced members of the club to
enrich our enjoyment of Chinese Brush
Painting. The topics have ranged from
gluing and applying borders to
paintings, to demonstrations of the
painting of exotic flowers and the
painting of exciting horses in motion.
February will be the start of the
Chinese New Year of the Sheep/Goat
and we will try our best to illustrate
those animals. We shall also celebrate
the occasion of the New Year with a
Chinese luncheon at a restaurant. The
date is tentatively set for February 20th.
As always, members of Monterey are
welcome to join our club at Windsor
Pavilion on Fridays, 9am-noon. "Gung
hay fat choy!" Happy New Year!
Classical Music: The Classical Music
Club will meet on Thursday, February
12th, 4-5:30pm in the Fir Room when
Frances Rosenberg will present a
program on Mendelssohn’s Concerto for
Violin and Orchestra in E Minor, Op. 64
(1844). Inspired by his friendship with
the famous violinist Ferdinand David,
this piece with its unique fusion of
lyricism and virtuosity is one of the best
loved in the violin concerto repertoire.
All are invited to attend.

Craft Carnival: Rummage Sale
February 28th, 9am-1pm is what we are
thinking about (of course, volunteers
also come in the day before to get it
ready)! To the sorters, porters, settersups, takers-down, tidy-uppers and staff
– thanks in advance for what we know
will be another great day of Monterey
team spirit! It may be “rummage” but
we hope that whatever we receive is clean
and useable: we appreciate not needing
“washer-uppers” and “thrower-outers”!
Darts: Fun! A friendly supportive group
welcoming new members; both
beginner and experienced players to
practice darts; board and instruction
available during club time. Magnetic
wand for retrieval of fallen darts from
the floor for those worried about
mobility. 1-4pm on Tuesday and Sunday
afternoons with a tea break at half-time.
Laughter occurs often; singing
frequently. Come out and give us a try.
Family History: February meeting on
Thursday, February 12th will be a talk by
Randy Stewart, Cultural Chair, Highland
Games Association. Title: My Father’s
Collection: Some Historic Scottish Artifacts
with an update on plans for a local
Scottish history centre.
Garden: Wow we are really into our
New Year. Why not come and join a
new club, we are a happy group, and
would like you to visit. Learn what can
be achieved even on a balcony. Indoor
plants are also a joy. Our next meeting
will be held Wednesday, February 18th at
2pm in the Garden Court .
Note-Ables: Rehearsals for our portion
of the show, The Best of the Best, on
March 14th & 15th are well underway on
Sunday and Thursday afternoons. The
production staff is busy preparing
costumes and props. Dates and times
of ticket sales are as shown on the front
page of this Oak Leaves. More news
regarding our AGM will be published in
the next issue of this column.
Sing-a-Long meets Thursdays 10-11:30am.
You are invited, join us! Celebrate
St. Valentine’s Day February 12th with
the Trilights Band and Charlie!
Alan Cowood, Kathleen Edge,
Win Robertson, Derek Howe, pianists,
Charlie
on
drums,
guitarist
Paul Gawthrop and Jim Lawler,
clarinetists encourage us to sing - so
good for our hearts! January 22nd we
celebrated Robert Burns Day with a
stirring program by Derek Howe,
Charlie Bedford. Many members wore
tartan! Calling the Welsh March 5th, we
celebrate St David’s Day! Calling the
Irish March 12th we celebrate St Patrick’s
Day! Keep well and sing with us!
Spanish: Travelling to Spain, Mexico or
South/Central America or are you
interested in practicing your Spanish?
The Spanish Club meets every Friday,
11:15am-12:30pm. Topics of discussion
are varied and lively. We aim to improve
our Spanish and have fun. We are not a
teaching group only a conversational
group. Come and try us out!
Ukulele: The club sometimes plays just
what members want to play but those
Mondays seem to be few.
The
Kensington Care Facility preferred a
Hawaiian playlist so that's what we
practiced and performed in January.
Now we are working on a new playlist
of old favourites with good tunes and
lyrics to perform for the Saanich
Peninsula Hospital and MRC in March.
Its always good fun Mondays, 1-3pm.
Walking: About 30 members met at
NAR restaurant for the annual
Christmas luncheon on December 8th.
We normally meet at 9:30am on
Mondays in the Centre lobby. You can
choose from a stroll or a faster steady
walk around our neighbourhood for an
hour with socializing afterwards. A great
opportunity to explore our many back
lanes and secret places while getting in
your 10,000 steps a day!
