COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course teaches mathematics needed by those teaching new-content
mathematics at the K – 8 level with emphasis on the fundamentals of
probability and statistics & geometry for grades K - 8. Open only to elementary,
dual, and special education majors and to others with departmental
approval.
Prereq(s): Completion of Math 122.
HOMEWORK
Worth 20% of your grade. Homework is due by the next class meeting
Homework will be a mix of online and/or directly from the textbook.
We will review homework at the beginning of each class. Write the number
of any homework problem you had difficulty with on the board as you enter
class. If your problem is already listed on the board put a check mark next
to it.
Homework that is not neat, easy to read or stapled or appears to have been
copied from the back of the text will automatically receive a zero. NO
LATE HOMEWORK WILL BE ACCEPTED—NO EXCEPTIONS.
However I do drop two paper homework assignments and 2 online
homework assignments.
EXAMS
4 exams and 1 comprehensive final will be given. Since I am testing your
understanding of the material, exam questions will not always look like the homework
questions you have had. Exams will be a mix of multiple choice questions answered
on a scantron and problems worked out in full. You will need a Scantron form 882E
for each exam. Comprehensive Exams will be returned to you if you bring a selfaddressed stamped envelope to class on the final exam day. You can skip the
comprehensive exam if you have a grade of 92% or higher from all your other grades.
GRADING
WITH FINAL EXAM
• 4 Exams: 60% of your grade
• 1 Final Exam: 20% of your grade.
• Homework: 20% of your grade
GRADING SCALE
A: 90% - 100%; B: 80% - 89%; C: 70%-79%;
WITHOUT FINAL
* 4 Exams: 80% of your grade
* Homework: 20% of your grade
D: 60%-69%;
F: 0% - 59%
MISSED EXAMS
There will be no make-up exams. If you miss an exam, your final exam score will be
used to replace that exam score. Accomodations will not be made for people leaving
before the comprehensive exam is given. If you leave before the final exam is given,
you will be given a zero on that exam. Make any winter break travel arrangements
accordingly.
