Post of Lay Chaplain for St Aloysius College Primary School
1. The Rector, St Aloysius College invites applications for the post of full-time Lay Chaplain for St
Aloysius College Primary School.
2. The aim of the College is the formation of Christian “men and women for others”. In order to
reach this goal, the College helps students to become competent in their studies, gives them all the
opportunities to be men and women of conscience, full of compassion and committed to Christian
values, with a spontaneous preference for the poor.
3. The salary for the post of Lay Chaplain in 2014 is €20,809.98 (Scale 7) per annum rising by
annual increments of €531.17 per annum to a maximum of €23,997. The appointment, which is
subject to a probationary period of one year is on a full-time basis and is subject to the rules and
regulations governing St Aloysius College.
4. The starting date for this post is 1st September 2014.
5. Job Specification
5.1 The Chaplain will have main responsibility for the day-to-day Christian life of the Primary
School. S/he is responsible for devising, developing, promoting and running a wide-ranging
chaplaincy programme, which appeals to the full range of ages (4-11) and degrees of religious
interest of the boys, their parents, and the staff of the Primary School.
5.2 The roles and responsibilities of the Chaplain include:
a) Be part of the Senior Management Team (SMT) of the Primary School and collaborates with
assistant heads, teachers and support teachers in the implementation of the mission of the School.
The Chaplain is accountable to the Primary School Headmistress and to Fr Rector. As St Aloysius
College is a Jesuit school, it is expected that the Chaplaincy programme and the style of the work
of the Chaplain will be in the Ignatian tradition.
b) Preparation of school liturgies (including school and class liturgies, morning assemblies,
reconciliation services, graduation liturgy, opening and closing of the academic year liturgies etc..).
c) Coordination of all activities of the “Young Stars”, which forms part of the Eucharistic Youth
Movement.
d) Promotion of staff faith development (including induction of new staff) and developing
opportunities for prayer and meditation for students and staff.
e) Establishing and maintaining a presence on the playgrounds at school events (including evening
events).
f) Devising and running a retreat programme (in the tradition of the Spiritual Exercises of St
Ignatius) as well as coordinating and running staff retreat days.
g) Devising and running the Chaplaincy programme (with events for each year group).
h) Preparing assembly prayers and reflections and assisting teachers in preparation of class
presentations at assembly.
i) Working with teachers and support teachers to update the Religious Education curriculum. The
chaplain must also develop strong working relationships with teachers and support teachers to
ensure that chaplaincy activities and the work of teachers, support teachers and administrators are
mutually supportive.
j) Offering support as needed by individual pupils, staff and parents.
k) Liaising with the SAC Secondary School Chaplaincy Team and the SAC Sixth Form Chaplaincy
Team, the Jesuit Youth Network and the Spiritual Director of the Eucharistic Youth Movement.
l) Managing volunteers and staff, including Jesuits in formation, who may, from time to time, be
assigned to the chaplaincy and the Eucharistic Youth Movement.
5.3 Importantly, the Chaplain is not expected to do everything him or herself but to involve other
staff and pupils, and to encourage and support them in adopting leadership roles.
5.4 At the end of each academic year the Chaplain is expected to evaluate the work of the
Chaplaincy Team and make sure that s/he will continue to promote and encourage the school’s
pastoral care for the whole school, pupils, staff and parents.
6. Person Specification
6.1 You will be a baptised and practising Roman Catholic lay man or woman, committed to the
spiritual and personal development of students of primary school age.
6.2 Above all you will enjoy the company and challenge of students (ages 4 to 11), and have an
easy and humorous manner, which combines openness and engagement with challenge and
formality.
6.3 You will have a degree in theology or religious studies or other experience or qualification that
suits you to a chaplaincy role.
6.4 You will have good social skills, both with Primary School students and also with adults
(parents and staff), showing flexibility where needed but also accountability and a high degree of
reliability and formal organization required in a school context. You will be confident in leading
large and small, formal and informal, groups of pupils and adults.
6.5 You will have a good sense of the Church’s liturgy and be able to recruit and enthuse boys to
2 take part in school worship.
6.6 You will be fluent in both Maltese and English and an articulate speaker with presence and the
ability to present, credibly and enthusiastically, the challenges of the Gospel.
6.7 You will have good administrative and organisational skills, including scheduling events,
making bookings, arranging itineraries and timetables, obtaining and conserving resources,
delegating responsibilities and providing clear briefings and instructions.
6.8 You will have the freedom and willingness to work flexibly, including in the evenings and
weekends, and to arrange your working days and hours to ensure you have entitlement time off but
are available for school events and activities as needed.
6.9 You will be expected to have a clear Police Conduct and for there to be no concerns with regard
to the safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults. You will also be expected to understand and
adhere to the professional and pastoral boundaries of working with children and young people.
7.0 Certificates and testimonials
7.1 Qualifications and experience claimed must be supported by certificates and/or testimonials,
copies of which should either be attached to the application or sent separately to the Rector by not
later than eight (8) working days from the closing date of applications. Scanned copies sent
electronically are accepted.
7.2 Applicants must provide transcripts of their qualifications. Diploma/Degree/Post Graduate
Certificates must be accompanied by a transcript, in English, showing the Award obtained and final
classification. Original certificates and/or testimonials are to be invariably produced for verification
at the interview.
7.3 With respect to qualifications produced in response to this call for applications, applicants are
required to produce a recognition statement by the Malta Qualifications Recognition Information
Centre (MQRIC) based within the Malta Qualifications Council, or by any other designated
authority, as applicable. Such statement should be attached to the application and the original
presented at the interview.
7.4 Applicants who are not in possession of such a statement may still apply, provided that they
submit a copy of the statement to the Rector as soon as it is available and, in any case, by not later
than one week from the closing date of the call for applications.
7.5 Applicants are exempt from the above requirements in respect of qualifications obtained from
accredited universities or other accredited institutions that are listed and available for download
from the MQRIC page of the Malta Qualifications Council website (www.mqc.gov.mt/mqric).
3 8.0 Selection
8.1 Eligible applicants will be assessed by a Selection Board to determine their suitability for the
post.
8.2 The result will be communicated to applicants by the Rector.
