Firstly a huge huge thank you….. To all the 145 schools across Dorset that have completed their Music Census in time for the Arts Council Return. I will summarise results for you in the next newsletter. This term we said farewell to Greame Thew the Music Area Leader for Christchurch, Verwood, Shaftesbury & Gillingham as he takes up post as a Music teacher in a Hampshire School . Lest We Forget Centenary Concert Thursday 19th March A matinee performance will be available for schools to attend at a highly subsidised cost of only £1 a ticket. The concert will bring together students from Dorset, Poole and Bournemouth who will perform with BSO musicians to commemorate those that gave their lives in World War I. Whilst the concert will commemorate it promises to deliver a musical extravaganza to engage an audience of all ages in a manner fit for purpose. Schools will be invited to learn the specially written song “Lest We Forget” and perform it as part of the concert. Seats will be limited so bookings should be made via Nexus early to avoid disappointment. Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra: Shostakovich 5th Symphony Study Session & Concert th Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra will present its very first supporting seminar for students studying Shostakovich’s 5 Symphony as part of their AQA A Level Music Paper. Students will meet Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra’s Young Conductor in Association, Frank Zielhorst, for an hour long discussion of Shostakovich 5 with recorded examples, exploring the context of the piece and the compositional components that make up the work, as well as how a conductor might approach the music with an orchestra. Students will then attend the evening concert and hear the work played live by Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. Date: Wednesday 26 November 2014 Venue: The Lighthouse, Poole, Cost: £6 per student. The Inspire scheme will begin this year with a series of Labs across the UK, aimed at schools, young composers and teachers. The Inspire Labs are a great way for young people aged 12 – 18 to develop their compositional skills through working with professional musicians and leading composers, and will offer invaluable support and guidance to young composers who are aiming to enter the 2015 Inspire Young Composers’ Competition, launching in January 2015. New Providers RedStar Music predominantly offers singing and compositional workshops that can be entirely tailored to your needs and requirements. Their workshops encourage and develop pupils’ musical responses as well as developing their confidence and wider social skills.
