Covering letter
Hello!
I have recently seen your advert for a new Creative Artworker in your Poole Head Office and would
be very interested in applying for the position. (Reference: VAC-16292)
This job appeals to me as it will be expanding on my current interests in designing products and
associated promotional material. I’d look forward to the challenge of making new images that also fit
within a brand identity. In return I can offer you a fresh approach to contemporary design, an
endless source of creativity/problem solving ideas and a mature and professional work ethic.
I have just finished my Illustration degree, where I have developed a keen interest in characters,
narratives and pattern making. More recently I have been writing, illustrating and printing my own
books and also designing products such as pencil cases, coasters and wrapping paper. Colour,
line, pattern and imagination are all key parts of my illustrations. To make my images, I first hand
draw all elements before scanning and colouring/placing digitally. I feel I maintain some of my hand
drawn qualities in my final outcomes, which gives my work a unique edge. During my time at
university, I have learnt how to use Photoshop to a high standard as well as a good knowledge of
Illustrator and In Design.
This year I have taken on multiple freelance commissions for branding/logo imagery which have
taught me a lot about making work to a professional standard, dealing directly with clients to
achieve their needs and working to a deadline. I am also capable of putting together a contract and
negotiating fees. Please find examples of my work on my website which I designed and made
myself – www.missabeet.com
Please find my CV attached and thank you for considering my application.
All the best,
Alex Beet
Profile
I have recently finished my degree in Illustration and I am looking for employment that will allow me
to further develop my interest in creativity, while also giving opportunities for me to learn new things. I
am enthusiastic with good social skills and happy to self-initiate my work or be part of a motivated
team.
Work Experience
2014 Freelance Illustrator and Creative Designer
While still at university and at present, I have begun to gain my own commissions for branding, logo
and character work. I have gained a lot of experience in setting up a contract, negotiating time
frames and payment, being able to work closely with a client to achieve their needs as well as
handle myself in tough situations (for example when a client refuses to pay for work). Through this
work I have learnt to present myself professionally, be reliable in my correspondence and become a
independent junior business woman in my field.
2012-2014 Shakeaway Bournemouth (café) as a Shakette
I worked in this fast paced environment for just over 2 years part time, while also at university and
for this, I received an hourly wage. My responsibilities were to greet and take orders from
customers, work tills and card machine, make recommendations to customers, make milkshakes
quickly, remember quantities for 100+ ingredients, stock up throughout the day, maintain a
presentable shop floor, clean down and help to train new staff.
Reference: Kayleigh Holmes was my manager for about 20months of my employment and had
worked there for about 5 years previous. Please feel free to contact her via email [email protected]
2011 Lava and Ignite, Bournemouth (now Cameo and Myu Bar)
I worked at this local nightclub for 8months over the summer and first year of my degree and
received an hourly wage. I had several positions at this job, often starting at the front of house
where I would take entry fees, welcome customers and resolve customer complaints. This was
extremely fast pace and I would often serve around 800 customers by myself in a 4 hour period.
After this, I would then help out behind the bar, taking orders, serving drinks, retrieving glasses,
cleaning, stocking up and helping to maintain a social atmosphere.
2009-2010 Facy, a fashion and home furnishing store in Henley on Thames.
I worked here for a year as a part time Retail Assistant, where I worked mostly selling women’s
fashion. I served and helped customers with their purchases, took deliveries, had a wide knowledge
of all products in each department and maintained the shop floor. I received an hourly wage for this
job. From this job, I learnt a lot about store presentation and how the customer interacts with
products.

Interests
Being a creative person, I love to visit galleries and museums for inspiration. Most recently, I
attended the Matisse Cut Out exhibition at the Tate Modern which showcased his huge and bold
collages, very full of life and a joy to experience first-hand. I am also a fan of the Illustration
Cupboard, BP portrait award, Russell Coates Museum, British Museum and exploring markets.
I am a Hula Hoop dancer and attend a weekly class as well as several specialised workshops to
improve different techniques of hooping. It helps me stay active and is the perfect activity to do in
the summer. I have also performed multiple times in local nightclubs and received payment for my
skill.
Last summer, I went on holiday to Mexico and discovered deep sea diving. I decided to get a PADI
qualification while I was there allowing me to dive for a week and I hope to dive again this summer. I
love the sea and its mystical creatures and strongly believe that their conservation is important. I
also went to a protest earlier this year against the slaughter and capture of dolphins in The Cove,
Japan.
Overall, I love to try new things, go to new places and live a healthy and active lifestyle. I enjoy
being part of a sociable group and sharing in different experiences and thoughts.
