World leaders in gas compressor design, application, modifications and re-design
Process Concept Design
The concept design is a “blue print” of a project and includes a process scheme, the
selection of major items of equipment, the associated facilities together with appropriate
costs and schedule.
To ensure that selected concept designs are cost effective and technically robust, MSE
develops and rigorously tests several feasible options before identifying the optimum
design. Designs are tested to ensure that they meet project specifications, particularly
production rates with changing reservoir conditions. Several facility locations, exporting
options and pipeline size and routes are also tested. MSE’s concept design provides
comprehensive information including detailed compressor system design and performance;
driver selection and fuel consumption; process equipment requirements; equipment and
compression system costs and a layout of the facilities.

MSE develops proprietary dynamic simulation models of oil and gas production facilities
that rigorously test the gas compression system and verify their operation and control
systems before installation in the field. GASMAN™ Dynamics analyse compressor
characteristics taking into account the non-linearity of surge control systems and their
interaction with the process control system. MSE also analyses the dynamic performance
of gas turbine drivers as well as variable speed and fixed speed motors with torque
coupling models.
Gas Compressor Consultancy
MSE is an acknowledged leader in Gas Compressor system design. Gas Compressors are
complex systems to design and challenging to specify and procure. They are uniquely designed
for each project. Typically costing tens of millions of dollars per train, combined with gas
turbine drivers, they represent one of the major pieces of capital equipment. They also have
the longest lead times, which requires early order placement. Selecting the right compressor
design specification at the concept stage is therefore vital to a project’s success.
MSE performs integrated asset modelling of Gas Fields using GASMAN™ Steady State.
GASMAN™ Steady State is an integrated software system, developed by MSE, that
incorporates data from reservoirs, wells, gathering systems, pipelines, process facilities and
compression systems allowing evaluation of production flows, pressures and total recovery
quantity for new and existing fields. GASMAN™ is used extensively to provide independent
verification of gas field forecasts prepared by operating companies.
MSE carries out detailed design of gas compressors, optimising the machinery selection from
process duties and known reservoir conditions. The optimisation of centrifugal compressor
design adds considerable value to the project. For existing projects MSE carries out compressor
field performance testing and analysis. Detailed testing helps to identify opportunities for
compressor re-wheeling and redesign, especially of ‘legacy’ compressors.
The following modelling schemes are undertaken by MSE engineers using GASMAN™
Steady State: reservoir simulation by material balance, history matching, validation of
GASMAN™ with industry software packages, wellbore hydraulics and well performance,
networking and pipelines, gas compression in integrated subsurface and topside models,
design of new facilities, management and development of existing assets, well-count and
compression optimisation studies, production forecasting, life of field analysis, and gas
storage design and operation.
When operating companies face a challenging compression project, MSE is often invited to
develop the concept design because of its experience working on hundreds of wide ranging
gas compression projects worldwide. Industry milestone projects MSE has carried out include:
The largest (120 MW) single compressor train for LNG refrigeration duty
The highest pressure (660 bar) injection compressor train
Re-design of injection compressor trains for pressures above 470 bar
Design of the compressors for the UK’s largest offshore gas field
Gas Compression System design for onshore terminal for 2500 MMSCFD gas
Re-design of gas lift and gas export compressors to extend field life
Debottlenecking and re-design of UK’s largest gas storage facility
MSE’s GASMAN™ Dynamics models have been field proven and are preferred by many
clients over alternative process simulators. MSE’s GASMAN™ has been used to solve field
operating issues of installed machines. Experience has shown that MSE models provide
accurate prediction of surge cycles and compressor instabilities arising from compressor
characteristics and blade angles.
MSE is at the forefront of the growth of LNG. Many major operating companies engage
MSE in the development of LNG plants using the company’s expertise in the design,
development and application of gas compression systems. MSE’s approach is to analyse
the compressor design at the beginning of the project when the process conditions are
still fluid. MSE’s engineers work closely with the operating company, their contractor and
equipment manufacturers to develop more reliable and efficient machines.
For large-scale gas compression projects, clients have retained MSE as Project
Management Consultants to provide technical support for tender preparation, bid
evaluation and order placement for long lead items. MSE provides machinery knowhow and continuity and shares its experience with contractors. MSE acts as the client’s
representative throughout the entire project; from detailed engineering, purchasing and
performance testing, post commissioning, manufacturing and factory testing to delivery
of equipment on site.
Experience has shown that a Re-design & Optimisation of the Gas Compression Systems is
the most practical and cost effective way to increase production rates from mature fields.
Gas Storage
MSE provides unrivalled knowledge and experience of designing, testing and
de-bottlenecking gas storage surface facilities. MSE optimises the design of surface
facilities by integrating these with subsurface elements including reservoir and well
performance using MSE’s proven GASMAN™ simulation tools.
MSE carries out field performance testing of compressors and gas turbines, troubleshooting
and failure investigations. Backed by a range of proprietary software tools, MSE tests many
large and complex oil and gas production facilities. MSE has developed test procedures
and methodologies which facilitate data gathering and data analysis providing accurate
results. MSE has also developed model based systems for field testing compressors and gas
turbines which allow remote monitoring of the entire production facility.
Compressor Designs for Liquefied Natural Gas
Following on from Concept Design, customers normally retain MSE’s services to support
clients through the FEED and EPC stages.
Increasingly, the world’s future oil and gas production will be derived from existing fields.
As oil and gas fields mature, reservoir depletion leads to the plant operating further away
from the original design, at non-optimal conditions, creating process and machinery
bottlenecks, resulting in equipment failures and lower production levels.
Performance Testing of Compressors & Gas Turbines
As independent consultants, MSE brings objectivity to problem solving. MSE’s main aim
is to provide a solution to the problem in order to restore oil and gas production. MSE’s
software tools are particularly suited for in-field performance testing and MSE’s integrated
models are extremely useful in pinpointing problem areas.
