MST HOW TO APPLY - Revised 2012-2013

Dear MST Applicant,
Thank you for considering Newburg’s Math/Science/Technology (MST) Magnet Program for your child’s middle school educational
experience. In order to apply to a Magnet Program, you must first submit your official on-line application to the JCPS Office of
Options and Magnets. They will then forward the student’s name to the requested school. The school will then mail you the school’s
application packet and will communicate with you about all deadlines and application requirements.
The Middle School MST Magnet Program at Newburg is specially designed for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students who excel in math,
science, and technology. Students in the MST Program are expected to achieve at high academic levels. MST classes will follow the
Advance Program curriculum.
In order to apply to the program, the following documentation must be submitted to the MST school that is in your designated
MST attendance area. You can obtain information about which MST school corresponds to your area by calling the Board of
Education at 485-3011.
Newburg requires:
A. Three Recommendation Profile Forms
1) TEACHERS – You must have 2 teacher recommendations. One must be from your current mathematics teacher and
one from your current science teacher.
2) COMMUNITY – Must be a person who is knowledgeable of the applicant, preferably outside of the school setting.
(Please provide the evaluators with a stamped envelope addressed to Newburg.)
B. Middle School Essay Form
The applicant must write an essay on “Why I want to be a part of a Math/Science/Technology Magnet Program” (no
more than 250 words). The essay must be signed by your current Language Arts teacher.
C. Academic Record
1) The parent/guardian must obtain and submit a copy of the student’s academic record from the previous school year
to include all grades/evaluations which appear in the child’s permanent school folder. This may be obtained from the
current school’s counselor
2) The parent must obtain and submit a copy of the first report card or progress report of the current school year. This,
too, may be obtained from the current school’s counselor.
D. Attendance Record
The parent must obtain copies of your child’s attendance record from the current school’s counselor. Please have the
school run an attendance report for you to submit. Hand written numbers on the bottom of the VISI records will not be
accepted. A REPORT CAN BE RUN FROM INFINITE CAMPUS.
E. Assessment Scores and/or Standardized Test Results
The parent/guardian must obtain and submit copies of Assessment scores and/or Standardized Test Results. You may
request copies of the test results from your school’s counselor. Examples of acceptable scores include the K-PREP
assessment (state test), or a norm referenced test.
Deadline for all documents to be received (Not postmarked) by the school: TBA.
The name of any student who qualifies for the MST program, based upon the above criteria, will be placed in a pool of qualified
applicants. Qualified students who are currently in magnet MST programs at Brandeis, Wheatley and Young Elementary Schools will
be selected first.
