Replacement of the concrete spillway and boat ramp is progressing in spite of
the winter weather. Please understand that when you read this update it will be
nearly a month old and work at the construction site is way beyond this report. In
fact, barring unforeseen severe weather, the concrete work at the spillway should
be complete.
Safety is our number one priority at the spillway and I want to remind you that
this is a major construction project and should be treated as such. The area is
dangerous and the construction site includes the boat ramp and maintenance
building parking area as well as the actual spillway – it is a “hard hat” area unless
you are being escorted. We appreciate your cooperation in this matter.
IMPORTANT: We have had people sledding on the hill adjacent to the spillway
and construction site on both sides of the creek bed. It appears that those
sledding may have used the siphon pipe to stop their forward motion while others
may have entered the creek bed. First and foremost, this is very hazardous
and could result in severe injury. Next, it is trespassing on SHPOA property. I
think everybody knows that sledding on or around the dam is strictly prohibited.
The Sheriff will be notified and violators will be prosecuted. This is a safety and
liability issue and should be taken seriously.
Construction work has been challenged by periods of snow and severe cold.
Work on the project was stopped at times and slowed at other times. However,

the project is close to schedule. The main spillway slope is about 90% complete
and the south side slope is ready to pour. I expect both of these to be complete
by the time you receive this report.
The new lake valve has been installed and the trashrack and cage to protect
the valve is being fabricated. The trashrack and cage will be installed as soon as
the fabrication is complete.

GARDEN CLUB NEWS:
Garden Club volunteers have been involved in many service projects
throughout the winter months. Monies and food items were donated to the
Jamestown Food Pantry from the October white elephant auction and from
collections at the Christmas Tea. Valentine treats were delivered to each
resident at Liberty Care in Jamestown and to area shut-ins (whose names were
submitted.) The Memorial Fund continues to accept donations to purchase
trees and other living plants to beautify our community. The most recent
contributions were received from the Elder family and from family and friends
of Jerry & Sharon Raflik. Engraved name plates added to the Memorial Plaque
near the entrance of the Max Powers Community Bldg. are “In honor of Bud
& Wanda Elder” and “In memory of Sarah Lorraine Crider” (mother of Sharon
Raflik.) Garden Club volunteers also decorated each of the entrance signs and
the garden boxes for the Christmas season. Members are now looking forward
to the end of the winter weather so all can begin spring gardening projects
instead of shoveling snow.
March Gardening Tips for ALL Residents:
Now is the time to fertilize your existing flower beds. By the middle of March,
you should apply a 12-12-12 dry fertilizer. Consult the bag for application
amount and then mark your calendar and re-fertilize every 6 weeks. You will be
amazed at how your existing plants will benefit from taking a few minutes to give
them nourishment and encouragement.
Note: If you have gardening questions, contact Master Gardener
Sarah Preston: 675-3729.

Winter Brings
Exercise Changes
Cold temperatures make people less
likely to be physically active during
these winter months. If you find
yourself losing motivation in exercise
here are a few tips to keep you going.
The first tip and the most important
for your safety is protecting yourself
against hypothermia. If you enjoy
the out of doors and that is your
form of exercise remember to first
stay hydrated and dress in multiple
layers. Temperatures as warm as 50
degrees can cause hypothermia when
combined with dampness and wind
chill factors.
Pace yourself. Heart attacks are
particularly common in sedentary men
and women who engage in sudden
exercise such as shoveling snow or
jump into an exercise routine after
many months of inactivity.
Look for a fitness program that you
are interested in. Some folks like a
gym with organized classes where
others may enjoy outdoor sports such
as cross country skiing or ice skating.
If you prefer to work out at home there
are hundreds of instructional videos
available.
Remember that exercise is critical to
your emotional health as it is to your
physical health. It can relax you when
you are feeling anxious and energize
you when you need a boost.
And always, always ask your doctor
for guidelines before beginning any
exercise program. If you experience
pain, excess sweating, shortness of
breath, nausea and or feeling lightheaded no matter what you are doing
STOP and seek medical attention.
We continue to meet at the Jasper
Road Baptist church during the winter
months and would love for you to
join us. Everyone works at their own
pace. None of the moves or routines
are difficult. Most of out workouts are
strength training and toning. If you
have any questions you can contact
Susan at 675-2189 or Tina at
675-2093.

Shawnee Hills Residents:
It’s not too early to be thinking about a summer
job for next year. We need certified lifeguards
for the beach. Without lifeguards our beach
cannot open! This year the Red cross will be
blending the training by offering part on-line
and part in the water. Schedules should be
available towards the end of the year.
