Contract Grant Writer (Part-time)
We're looking for an experienced writer for our Development team who can write quickly, clearly, persuasively,
with passion and under deadline. We need a story teller, a listener, a researcher; someone who can glean
information from a wide range of sources and weave it into a compelling narrative. We would welcome someone
with marketing experience to complement the writing experience.
The successful candidate will become well-versed in the YWCA NCA’s program areas (education, training,
youth programs, health & wellness, and social justice), and will support the fundraising for those programs by
writing grant proposals and reports. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who wants to use professional
writing skills and marketing savvy to help our mission of “eliminating racism, and empowering women.” The
Grant Writer will be a key member of the Development team, and will report to the Chief Development and
Communications Officer.
Key responsibilities:

Conduct prospect research to identify funding sources and opportunities from federal and DC
agencies, and from corporate and private foundations that align with the YWCA NCA’s mission and
program focus

Perform searches (using the Foundation Center as well as other sources) to identify newly released
grant opportunities, requests for proposals and other funding mechanisms YWCA NCA can leverage and
to identify new funding prospects

Develop and write letters of inquiry and full proposals requesting funds to support the YWCA
NCA’s programs

Develop a template that can be used to obtain letters of support from potential partners

Prepare presentations (if necessary) to be presented to foundations and/or corporations
Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree a plus

Minimum 1 year work experience in preparing successful grant proposals for non‐profit
organizations

Experience in securing successful funding from foundations and/or corporate giving

Must be able to translate value of mission‐driven organization into value for potential funders

Superior written and verbal communication skills

Quick learner, able to get up to speed on a wide variety of issues to identify intersections between
potential funding opportunities and YWCA NCA’s work

Must be a team player

Self‐starter with strong initiative, drive and ability to meet deadlines
