The continued generosity and support of the community is greatly appreciated and we were able to raise more than $120,000. The proceeds from the Gala will go a long way toward allowing us to continue providing our quality programming. March 2014 Volume 1, Issue 3 Fund-in-Need At the Gala, we raised over $12,000 for financial assistance program. This will greatly assist local families in financial need and allows deserving kids to experience the simple joy of attending summer camp. David Warsofsky of the Providence Bruins pledged to donate one week of camp for every goal he scores. Currently he has 6 goals totaling $1,200 towards our financial assistance program. Being named Youth of the Year is the highest honor a Boys & Girls Club member can receive. The title recognizes outstanding contributions to a member's family, school, community and Boys & Girls Club. Michaela received a scholarship check, funded by Beverly and Phil Johnston. At the age of 17 Michaela has overcome many obstacles that most people will never endure in a lifetime and continues to rise above them. She is honest, caring, hardworking, and the true essence of what it means to be a role model. (Continued on page 2) Page 2 Our 10th Annual Gala Honorees Dan and Sue Burke Dan is the President and CEO of Lifeworks Inc. and The Arc of South Norfolk. Dan is a member of the Board of Directors and the Board’s Executive Governance Committee of the Boys and Girls Club of Marshfield. Over the past 12 years, Dan has served as President and Board Chair, Vice President of the Board, cochaired the Development Committee and served on the Build The Future Committee which was responsible for the building design and capital campaign for the Club’s new clubhouse in 2012. Sue Burke is a Registered Nurse who currently works as a Visiting Nurse for Partners HealthCare at Home out of their Rockland Office. Sue has worked for Partners for 15 years. Prior to that, Sue worked at Braintree Rehabilitation Hospital in Braintree for 13 years as a RN. Sue has volunteered with a number of schoolbased activities in Marshfield over the years including serving as a Girl Scout Troop Leader. Jim and Lisa Murphy Jim is a contract administrator at South Shore Hospital. He is the Immediate Past President and Chairman of the Board for the Boys and Girls Club of Marshfield. Jim served as Pres- ident and Chairman of the Board from May 2009 through June 2012 and had the distinct honor on behalf of the Board of Directors to cut the ribbon at the grand opening of the new clubhouse in June of 2012. Lisa is a nurse working in surgical nursing administration at South Shore Hospital. Lisa is the former president of the MHS Backstage Boosters, Girl Scout and Boy Scout leader, treasurer for the MHS PTSO and CCD teacher. She is also a volunteer for the annual Molly Walk and has participated in the Relay for Life. John and Lori Valianti John is the owner and operator of South Shore Signs in Marshfield which stands by their motto “A Business Without a Sign is a Sign of No Business”. John is the founder of the Boys and Girls Club of Marshfield and a proud alumni of the Marlborough Boys and Girls Club, where he first experienced the influence of having a Club available for kids after school. John is also a former Board President and Board Member. Lori grew up on the South Shore, primarily in Norwell, graduated from UNH in 1988 and began a career in banking. She has had the privilege of being employed by Bank of America (and its predecessor banks) for over 25 years where she currently serve as a VP/Portfolio Management Officer in Middle Market Commercial Lending. Youth of the Year Michaela Nee (continued from front page) Michaela joined our team over three years ago as a staff member. From the moment she walked in the door, she made a lasting impression on all the staff, volunteers and our members. Michaela assists members with their homework, mentors middle school girls and gets to know each member. A few of her favorite programs to help with are Peer Reading, Dramatic Readers, Science Fair and our Inclusion Program that works with children with developmental disabilities. She continuously goes beyond our expectations, encouraging kids to work hard, stay positive and always lends a helping hand. Outside the Club, she is Editor-in-Chief of Youth in Government at Marshfield High School and a member of the Mock Trial Team. She is a volunteer for Best Buddies, Project Reach, AFS, Saint Monica’s in South Boston and the Friends of Rachel. She is also a member of her youth group. Volume 1, Issue 3 Page 3 Muppet Show Members enjoy a puppet show put on by Michael Godino. Michael makes puppets from scratch and rehearses the shows at is home. Michael attends Marshfield High School’s Post Program and has his own YouTube channel that features his puppet shows. Triple Threat Basketball Please Welcome... The clinic will focus on developing age-appropriate fundamentals in a positive non-competitive environment. The program is run by Mark Malloy, who has over 20 year’s basketball coaching experience. The Triple Threat Basketball Philosophy = Focus on the FUNdamentals! Instruction will focus on teaching ageappropriate basketball skills. Players of all skill levels and experience can benefit from the instruction.
