Postgraduate Opportunities at IT Carlow
IT Carlow offers graduates a range of opportunities for further study. These include both taught
and research Masters programmes and these are described in this brochure.
IT Carlow offers a range of high quality programmes that enable suitably qualified primary
degree holders (NFQ level 8) exciting opportunities to progress to higher awards, at NFQ Level
9 (Masters) and NFQ Level 10 (Doctorates). Level 9 awards can be undertaken by research and
thesis, or through taught programmes. Many programmes are available in full time or part time
modes.
Higher degrees by research are normally obtained by carrying out a period of research within
the Institute under the supervision of an experienced researcher. The desired average duration
of the Masters by Research degrees (NFQ level 9) is two years full-time, whilst a Ph.D.(NFQ level
10) should take from three to four years full-time.
Postgraduate students on taught programmes normally have to pass a series of examinations
and/ or assessments in order to progress through their course. Taught courses are available at
four levels – Higher Diploma (NFQ level 8), Postgraduate Certificate (NFQ level 9), Postgraduate
Diploma (NFQ level 9), and Masters Degree (NFQ level 9). Individual taught courses are
described under the appropriate department/ school in the IT Carlow prospectus and
additional information is available on the course pages at www.itcarlow.ie/research/postgraduate-studies.htm.
Entry to a higher diploma is typically for holders of an Honours Bachelor’s degree in a different
field of learning than the initial award, e.g. the Higher Diploma in Business is a one-year
graduate diploma programme designed for graduates of non-business disciplines.

Postgraduate Testimonials
Name: Emma Smullen
Supervisors: Dr. Patricia Mulcahy, Dr. David Dowling and Dr. John Finan (Teagasc)
Project title: Coordinated development of leading biomass pre-treatment technologies for the
generation of bio-products from Irish crops.
When I completed my fourth year research project, I realised that environmental research was
an area I could see myself working in and one that I might make a significant contribution to.
In 2011, having completed a Bachelor of Science (Honours) Degree in Environmental Science at
IT Carlow, I had an opportunity to work as a postgraduate researcher under the Teagasc Walsh
Fellowship programme. Furthering my education to MSc or PhD level was always something I
had considered. Having enjoyed four years of study at IT Carlow as an undergraduate the
decision to continue my education at the institute as a postgraduate research student was an
easy one to make.
EnviroCore has the facilities, resources and support needed to study at MSc or PhD level as well
as a wealth of knowledge in the areas of biotechnology, microbiology, biochemistry, analytical
science and many more. Also the supportive environment provided by fellow researchers and
supervisors were key factors influencing my decision to study at the Institute of Technology
Carlow and to join the team at EnviroCore.
Name: Mary Jo Hurley
Supervisors: Dr. Dina Brazil and Dr. Thomaé Kakouli-Duarte
Project title: Interactions between entomopathogenic nematodes (EPN) and bacterial
endophytes isolated from bioenergy crops.
I graduated with a Bachelor of Science (Honours) Degree in Biosciences with
Biopharmaceuticals from IT Carlow in 2011. Subsequently, I completed a 3 month work
placement with Teagasc at Oak Park working as a research assistant. This provided a good
foundation for future research. Furthering my education to MSc or PhD level was always an
option I had considered and the IT Carlow Postgraduate Research Scholarship Programme
provided an additional support to undertake a master programme.
My research project is part of a collaboration between Dr Dina Brazil, from the Biotechnology
and Molecular Environmental Science Group and Dr Thomaé Kakouli-Duarte, from the
Molecular Ecology and Nematode Research Group, both members of EnviroCORE. At present
there is no other research group in Ireland involved in this important specialist area combining
environmental science, endophytic bacteria and nematode research and it is a privilege to work
and learn within such a progressive and dynamic team. My research at IT Carlow has allowed
me to pursue this technology professionally and to contribute to the development of sustainable
agriculture practices within the economy in Ireland.

IT Carlow Graduate Internship Programme Profiles
Oonagh Mangan, Dublin, Brand Ambassador for Jameson
Whiskey Brand Communications & Marketing Intern.
“Following my internship at IT Carlow I worked for Portobello
Institute and was responsible for their marketing. This was a good
experience; however I then applied for the Jameson Whiskey Brand
Ambassador graduate programme.
I was accepted onto the
programme so I am absolutely over the moon. I start at the end of
July and will be in Dublin and Cork for my training and then I am moving
to London in September as I am going to be the brand Ambassador for the UK. So it is all very
exciting. I have to say a lot of my success in getting the job was thanks to you and everything I
learned and the experience I gained during my time doing my internship. I would highly
recommend students to go for the Internship at IT Carlow because I found having it on my CV
really put me above and beyond other candidates when it came to experience when applying for
jobs.”
Connor Keppel, Carlow, Marketing
Communications & Marketing Intern
Manager
-
Phorest
“This internship set me off on a whirlwind adventure in marketing and
PR. After completing my degree and this internship I started
working as a PR executive in the Agri sector. It was from here that I
started getting a taste for technology and moved to a telecom
company as marketing manager before landing a dream job in a tech
start-up called Phorest. We’re a software-as-a-service company that
develops point-of-sale and marketing software for hair and beauty salons and the company is
rapidly expanding with over 50 employees in Ireland and the UK. My role is to work with the
CEO/Sales team and lead the marketing team to grow the Phorest brand and generate quality
leads from PR, advertising, PPC, SEO, Social Media, Trade Shows and a whole host of other
channels across Ireland, UK and Finland. The next stage of the adventure is exploring other
European countries and the US with the hope of a market entry. This has all happened in just a
few years – the moral of the story is this… It simply wouldn’t have happened without the IT Carlow
internship. It’s a career accelerator. Getting this opportunity is getting ahead. Best of luck!”
