5. Brief Biography
Dr. I. P. Singh working as Principal Scientist, at NRC for Citrus, Nagpur has 28 years
research experience on horticultural crops. He did his M.Sc.Ag. in Horticulture from BHU,
Varanasi and Ph.D. from Gauhati University. Dr Singh started his career as Scientist in Indian
Council of Agricultural Research(ICAR) and posted at ICAR research Complex for NEH region,
Shillong, Meghalaya where he served more than 12 years in Tribal areas of NEH region. He was
transferred from NEH Region to NRC Region to NRC for Citrus, Nagpur in 1998. Dr. Singh is
widely travelled and has visited many countries like USA, Puerto Rico, Thailand, Malaysia and
Haiti. Trained in Yale University and University of Florida (USA) & University of Puerto Rico.
Dr. Singh made significant contribution in field of citrus biodiversity, selection of suitable
genotype of citrus and production of disease –free plants of citrus. Released two acid lime
variety for cultivation. Singh leads 21 exploration missions to collect citrus genetic diversity
available in country specially in NEH region. Collected 457 accessions of citrus belonging to
different citrus species and added to National Gene Bank for Utilisation. Contributed
significantly to DNA fingerprinting of citrus using molecular marker. Dr. Singh was instrumental
of the introduction of elite germplasm of citrus and established modern citrus nursery at NRCC,
Nagpur and produced over half million disease – free plants of citrus. His main scientific
contributions are Collection, Characterization and Mapping of Citrus genetic diversity in India,
Standardized micropropogation protocol of citrus for large scale propogation, Production og
diseases-free planting materials of citrus and selected many superior clones of mandarin (18),
sweet orange (13), acid lime (12), pummel (5) and citron (2). Dr. Singh is Nodal officers of IPR
and Mega Seed Project of ICAR for citrus. Under HRD he organised total 21 training
programme in different parts of the country (Meghalaya, Assam, Sikkim, Nagaland, Manipur,
Mizoram, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh and Maharashtra) and trained more than 615 officer and
farmers of different citrus growing areas of country. As a site coordinator of UNEP/GEF project
Dr. Singh identified two farmers varieties of Mango and one farmer variety of acid lime and
developed profile of custodian farmers. DUS guideline of citrus developed by Singh under
PPV&FRA project of Govt. of India for protection of citrus varieties in the country. Developed
protocol for identification of citrus rootstock.
He received Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose National Award for Excellencein Plant
Biodiversity in year 2005, “National Magnum Award” from Magnum foundation for excellent
work in Citriculture in the year 2007 and many poster paper award. Dr. Singh is fellow of Indian
Society of Citriculture, Nagpur; Fellow of Hill Horticulture Development Society, Almora,
Uttaranchal; Fellow of Environmental Research Academy International, Visakhapatnam, Andhra
Pradesh and fellow of CHAI. Life member of 5 leading scientific societies of India.. He was
felicitated by different State Govt. ( Punjab, Sikkim, Meghalaya, Assam, Tripura, Arunachal
Pradesh, Mizoram, Nagaland, Manipur, West Bengal, M.P. and Maharashtra) for contribution to
citrus industry of India. He is chairman and member of many important committee like Institute
managemet committee of ICAR etc.
Dr. Singh has more than 150 papers/articles published in journal/magazine of National
and International repute. Besides, he is author of many books, technical bulletins, research
bulletin, Citrus Catalogue, Mango Catalogue, Citrus Monograph, extension bulletins,
proceedings, Calendar, poster, flyer and magazine. Prepared Video film, CD, prospective plan
and Web site for the canter. He has been invited by a number of learned bodies and Institutions
to deliver lectures as an expert in Citrus Biodiversity and Production of Disease-free planting
materials of citrus. He has presented invited papers at several national and international symposia
and conferences and acted as chairman/ co-chairman and rapporteur of many important sessions.
Dr. Singh is alumni of world famous universities like BHU, Varanasi and Yale University, USA.
He is on the editorial board of Indian Journal of Citriculture and also executive body member of
ISC, Nagpur and ISPGR, New Delhi. Dr. Singh invited by Govt. of Meghalaya and Govt. of
Odisha for development of Road map of Citrus. He is Member of Institute management
Committee of NRC for Litchi, Mujaffarpur, Bihar nominated by DG, ICAR. He was also
member of IMC of NRCC, Nagpur during 1998-2001.
