CROYDON SOUTH WEST LPT UPDATE
We have had a report of 'Cold Callers' in Forge Avenue in Coulsdon who
are asking residents if they want their front drive done.
They may well be a legitimate company and we have had no reports of
'aggressive selling' or complaints to be fair, however there are
vulnerable and elderly residents in the community and as such we want
to ensure they are not being exploited.
We advise to get at least 3 quotes so you can get a measure of pricing
for any work considered and always consult with family and friends. It is not
advisable to make a decision on the doorstep and always ask
for a quote if you do consider any work.
If you have any concerns or know of a neighbour who is vulnerable or
elderly then please be neighbourly and look out for them.
Call 101 (Croydon Police) if you see any cold callers who you feel to
be acting suspiciously or aggressively.

Croydon South-West Team
Some other local team reports are as follows:
Thornton Heath NPT worked in partnership with the Noise Pollution Team from
Croydon Council to execute a warrant at the home address of a male who is currently
the subject of a high profile Anti Social Behaviour investigation. The purpose of the
warrant was to seize specific stereo equipment that was responsible for making
excessive noise by the offender at all times of the day and night. This was causing a
lot of distress to various neighbours of his who had been complaining for a long time.
Any resident suffering from this type of ASB are asked to contact the Council
Heathfield - this ward is still suffering from theft from vehicle offences and so the
Team would like to remind local residents to lock their vehicles, not leave anything
valuable on show and now the nice weather is coming to wind up windows as a few
recent thefts have been via open windows
Crystal Palace Triangle has had 3 distraction thefts from the service till outside
Sainsbury's Westow Street SE19. Whilst using the till, the victims, generally elderly
have been distracted, someone has looked over his shoulder and looked at his PIN
number, then stolen his card. Used it within 10 minutes to withdraw cash from the
account, advice to elderly residents to be mindful at outside cashpoint machines and
maybe obtain cash by using the Cashback facility at a till inside
IDENTITY FRAUD
A N/W member in the south of the Borough has sent us the following
information on an attempted fraud.
“Two weeks ago I received 2 letters from HMRC through the post addressed
to a Marine Boatyard company c/o a name I did not recognise but to my
address. I opened one letter and it appeared that it was confirming a self
assessment form had been sent. Further investigation and googling found
that 2 companies had been set up using my address with 4 registered
directors.
I spent 2 evenings sorting out - contacting the police, HMRC, Companies
House, my bank....
On-line also I noticed that there are several companies listed as operating
from private addresses in my road - some may be actual but I wonder if others
(like these 2 are using residential addresses and setting up 'shell companies'
by way of identity fraud”.
EMAIL SCAMS
The bank phishing emails trying to obtain your personal details continue this
week with one from Nat West security team@ apple.ssi.co.uk warning that
you have entered incorrect or false information on your account; as usual you
must click on the link to verify your correct details. The link leads to a site
called ‘natwest-personal.com which is hosted in Utah USA.
ABOUT 112
Need help? 112 is your life-saving number!
112 is the European emergency phone number, available everywhere in the EU, free
of charge.
It is possible to call 112 from fixed and mobile phones to contact any emergency
service: an ambulance, the fire brigade or the police.
When a person dials 112, a specially trained operator will answer the call.
Depending on the national organisation of emergency services, the operator will
either deal with the request directly or transfer the call to the most appropriate
emergency service.
Operators in many countries can answer the calls not only in their national language,
but also in English or French. If the caller does not know where he is, the operator
will identify where the person making the call is physically located and will pass it to
the emergency authorities so that these can help immediately.
112 operators do not provide traffic and weather reports, general information or
answers to queries. Calling 112 as a joke or calling and then hanging up is
considered a hoax call. Hoax calls not only waste the time and money of the
emergency operators, but can also be dangerous. If 112 lines or call operators are
busy with hoax calls, someone with a real emergency may not be able to get the help
needed. In most countries, it is a criminal offence to make hoax 112 calls and a
person can be judged for that.
112 does not replace the existing (UK 999) national emergency number. In most
countries, it operates alongside them. However, Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands,
Portugal, Sweden, Malta and Romania have opted for 112 as their main national
emergency number.
