President’s Notes
June 8th is the NNC Club Hike to Tenant Falls! Please see the detailed information regarding this
hike on the cover of this newsletter. This hike features beautiful scenery with waterfalls and the
Adirondack Mountains. Many thanks to Jim Hussey and Mary Nicotera for arranging all the details.
There will be a grooming demonstration held on Sunday, June 15th. Our hosts will be Sheila
Portington and David Kimberlin-Wyer at their home in Diamond Point. It is a bit of drive but the
scenery is lovely! Learn how to trim those hairy feet and ears and gently remove those mats or
knots that appear all too frequently.
Mary Lou Cuddy
Many thanks to Charlene and Lance Freiberger, Kathy Cohen and Helen and Eric Horn for
organizing the Annual Club Picnic. A great time was had by all! Members and Newfs who were recognized are listed
elsewhere. I would like to give two special mentions though. The President’s Award was given to Laura and Scott
Davidson for their dedication to Newf Rescue and to Honey, in particular. An award well-deserved. And the heroic
actions of Coco who saved the Manning family from a possible tragedy from carbon monoxide poisoning. Koko was a
rescue Newf that the Manning’s recently adopted. The whole story is in this newsletter.
Mark your calendars with all the upcoming events! We are always looking for new ideas so if you would like to see an
new event scheduled, please let us know!
I would like to encourage every member to complete and submit the survey included in this issue. This is your club and
this is an excellent opportunity to make it even better! We want to hear from YOU!
Hug Your Newf!!!!!

Member Spotlight - The Moll’s
Our next members are Lee and Joanne Moll who have been in love with the breed for over 20 years. I enjoyed reading the
descriptions of all the different personalities each one of their Newfs have had .
What made you decide to share your life with this wonderful breed?
It started with a black newf named Barkley. Our friends Tim and Laura owned him and he was a big baby. Whenever we saw Tim
and Laura, Barkley was right there with them.
How long ago did you get your first Newf?
One night while reading the Post Star, we saw an ad “Newfie for sale to a good home.” We immediately drove to Hudson Falls and
met Conan of the Adirondacks. A five year old Topmast black male with a chain collar intertwined into his mats and he was hooked
to a wire line as his run.
We brought him home, (in 1990), and shaved him down to get the matts and burdock out of his fur. We immediately fell in love
with him. He was big, black and had an attitude, but he was always by your side no matter where you were in the yard. We were
blessed with 9 wonderful years with Conan before we lost him and though our hearts were broken, we were determined to
continue on our Newfie journey.
Our next Newf was Imke, a 3 year old from a breeder near Rome, NY who was downsizing. She was nicknamed “Miss Pigpen” as
she would roll in the dirt the first chance she got, just impossible to keep clean! We also rescued Bearloc, our first Landseer, two
years later. When we went to pick Bearloc up, he could only walk on three legs due to a failed cruciate surgery. Two surgeries later
gave Bearloc use of all four of his legs, and he could swim forever. Bearloc was diabetic and received two insulin shots every day
for two years. Amazingly he lived to be over eleven.
As only other Newfie lovers know, there just no other breed that compares to that of the Newfoundland. They touch you so
deeply, that when they leave you, you think your heart will never heal.
At one point, we decided that it was just too hard to continue the journey with the Newfies. We made an appointment to look at a
litter of Portuguese Water dogs in northern Maine. Fate must have been on our side that day. Upon arrival, the breeder decided
to have a friend of theirs meet us to show us the puppies, when we asked to meet the sire and dam, we were told that the sire did
not like strangers…our first lesson on a “responsible” breeder? Needless to say, we discussed it all the way home.
Our next call was to John Cornell. Someone mentioned that he might have puppies. Unfortunately he did not, but he did know of a
possible litter in Canada. Enter Rossignol. Rossi was a son of John’s “Bogie.” He was a lovable rebel. We loved him dearly, though
we lost him too soon at only 7.

Member Spotlight - The Moll’s
In 2010, we continued our journey with Duncan. When he was 18 months old, we drove him up to see John and Elaine, we were so
proud of what a beautiful “pet” he turned out to be. And his / our “show dog” career began. But his favorite occupation is to steal
a slipper then dangle it in front of you so you can chase him.
What are the names and ages of the current Newf(s) you own?
We now have our 3 boys, Duncan (3 ½), Jiggs (5 ½), a rescue from Virginia and our second Landseer, Diesel (8 months.)
What is the funniest things your newfs have ever done?
Conan, the biggest one we have had, loved to sleep with the cat. Bearloc was the sneak, we should have known as he was named
after Sherlock Holmes, he ate anything that was left on the counter, without a single sound!
Rossi loved to tunnel under the snow and would look like a Yeti when he came up. Duncan likes to sit in the inflatable dinghy, in or
out of the water, it doesn’t matter.
Diesel, what a fire cracker. He’s the pup in the commercial that takes the toilet paper and runs it through the house. He is determined to dig his way to China via the water bowl in the kitchen, and is sure that he is the biggest newf in the yard with the biggest
attitude.
What’s the favorite thing to do with your dog(s)?
Snuggling on the couch, swimming at the lake, chasing snowballs or just letting them put their heads out of the window at coin
drops. And yes, running after my slippers!
What has surprised you the most about owning a newf?
All of our newfs have had their own personalities, but every one of them has had a big heart. They have a way of reaching deep
into your soul with those big beautiful eyes. They are all truly special and we will always remember each and every one and the
special ways they have touched our hearts.

Heroic Newfoundland - Koko
(Photos by Mike Manning)
I just wanted to pass along the story of a recent event involving our newest Newf baby, Koko. She somehow
found her way into our lives when her adoptive human mother decided against keeping her last summer. So
on 7/11 last year we "rescued" each other and she joined our family. She has been a great dog, coasting
through level I and II obedience and then received here CGC in March of this year; all before her first
birthday on 4/2.
On Saturday 4/12, we were sleeping when I heard Koko whimpering in her crate. It was 5:30 AM and this
was very atypical for her, as she is usually very quiet so I got up to check on her. I noticed a faint beeping
sound every 30 seconds or so (neither Michael or I could hear this as we both wear earplugs to bed because
our cat has a party at 3 AM every night!). I woke Michael up to check out the sound. He found it coming
from a CO detector in the basement; changed the batteries and it went crazy, beeping that is. We called 911
and they detected CO levels in the 800's in the basement and 100's upstairs. Apparently, 10 ppm can kill a
person. The fire chief told us that had we stayed in bed sleeping we probably would have never woken up
or been in rough shape if we did.
We wanted to share our story in celebration of our amazing girl Koko and of course remind everyone to
check their CO detectors!

NNC Board Meeting Minutes
May 4th 2014 – Held at Panera Bread, Latham
Attending: Mary Lou Cuddy, Starr Willetts, Helen Mancuso, Kathy Cohen, Laura Davidson, Jim Pospisil, Lori Eldridge
Minutes of the last meeting were printed in the newsletter
Presidents Report: Mary Lou thanked the nominating committee for their work
Vice-Presidents Report: None
Recording Secretary: None
Corresponding Secretary: Kathy received a note from Beth Manning about Coco, a rescue Newf they got in July of 2011. Coco was
whimpering in her crate early in the morning and Mike and Beth woke up to discover very serious levels of CO2 in the house.
Action: Put complete story in newsletter, nominate Coco for the NCA hero award, and Mary Lou will forward info to Kathy for a
special NNC certificate.
Treasurer: Helen handed out the report, funds are low, and RESCUE IS EXTREMELY LOW.
Fun Match - At the last meeting we discussed possibly having the fun match at the new facility on Route 50 in Wilton. Mary Lou
went up to talk to them, but could not find the facility. Action: She will try again.
Newsletter - It costs about $30 each month to mail the newsletter to members that do not receive it by email. Do we want to pass
this cost on to the members that request the newsletter by mail? Perhaps add this cost on to their dues. Action: We’ll consider it
next year for dues renewal.
Rescue Guidelines - We need to have a rescue meeting. Action: Rescue meeting July 27th, along with a short board meeting.
Draft Test at the National, 2015- Carolyn Kuhn and Kathy Cohen have been working together organizing things over the telephone.
Northland’s test will be on Monday, Bear Mountain will be on Tuesday. Judges were discussed along with the expenses associated
with each one. Judges tentatively will be Keith Mallinson and Christine Brigham. Ralph Holzhauer will be the chief steward. Amy
Supko is the secretary. New England Newf club will provide the maneuvering course. For hospitality we will have donuts and
coffee in the morning and sandwiches for lunch from either Subway or the Hotel may insist on providing on site catering.
Regional Specialty: Judges are set, favors will be towels and soaps again. We need a new source for the embroidered towels, Mary
Lou met someone that can make the soaps.
Club Website: Mary Lou has been unable to contact Valerie Rowan. The website has not been updated since October 2013. We do
not have passwords to gain access to the site. We could have the NCA link to our Facebook page instead of the website. Action:
Perhaps put up a third website, directing people to go to our Facebook page for up to date information. Lori will work on this.
Calendar:
June 15th- Picnic/grooming clinic. New members have offered to host, near Bolton Landing. There are concerns about attendance,
as the location is so far north. Action: Board members vote yes to hold it in Bolton Landing.
July 27th – We will offer the CGC test and CGC advanced test. Starr will administer tests. NEED A HOST.
August 9th – Luncheon and supported entry at the Ballston Spa dog shows.
September 7th - Draft Test workshop rescheduled from the spring.
September 28th – NNC Regional Specialty
October 19th - Newf Halloween party at the Davidson’s.
November 22nd - Schenectady Holiday Parade
December 4th - Saratoga Victorian Stroll, 6th is Christmas party at Arvin Hart firehouse, 7th is the Troy Victorian Stroll, 13th or 14th is

seminar in January.

NNC Board Meeting Minutes
May 4th 2014 – Held at Panera Bread, Latham
Business Cards- Jim checked into the free business cards that are being offered from various companies. He said the free ones are
of very poor quality and have the suppliers ad on the back of the card. He will look into printing them ourselves.
New business:
Charlene would like to do a club survey. She will make it up and hand it out at the picnic. She is hoping for a better response if
people could fill it out immediately and hand it in. There was a discussion about what questions will be on the survey.
Helen is working on the classification of the club: Not-for-profit VS. Non-profit. 501c7 is a social club, this is what NNC is. She will
try to maintain this status. The club may have to go to a 501c3, this type will need separate bank account for rescue, will cost the
club money, and is a lot more work for general record keeping, financial records and taxes.
Meeting adjourned at 2:44pm

Northland’s Hosting the NCA National Draft Test in 2015
In Warrick, RI
To help defray out of pocket expenses, we need to have a fund raiser. I have spoken to Kathy
Cohen and Mary Lou Cuddy and we felt the best way to do so is to make a big gift basket
which will be raffled at our Regional Specialty at the Wine Country Shows the end of
September 2014.
I am asking the membership if they would be so gracious as to make item donations. Items
would be for both humans and dogs to enjoy. Some ideas for would be:









Special beer
Wine
Gourmet dog treats
Dog toys
Cheeses
Maple syrup
Fancy crackers
Fancy cookies
A grooming tool etc.
I'M SURE YOU CAN USE YOUR GREAT IMAGINATIONS !!
Tickets will sell at $5.00 for a single ticket or $20.00 for five (5)
Let's make this basket fantastic and enjoyable!
I know I can depend on each and everyone of you so thank you in advance for your great
support. Please contact me with your donation item at

The contents of this newsletter are the opinion of the author/editor and not those of the Newfoundland Club of America nor the Northland
Newfoundland Club. All members are urged to consult with a veterinarian on any and all medical/health information.
Northland Newfoundland Club is a recognized regional club of the Newfoundland Club of America. Would you like to join the NCA? If so,
contact Mary Lou Cuddy, 1155 Raymond Rd., Ballston Spa, NY 12020 or email [email protected]
If you have any questions about raising your new puppy, we suggest that you contact your breeder. If that assistance is not available, please feel
free to contact any board member for advice.
The NNC Board highly recommends that all NNC members take their Newfs to obedience classes; not let their dogs rush into another dog’s
space and keep their Newf(s) close to them while at NNC events. While Newfoundland's have wonderful temperaments, they are still dogs first,
and all members need to use caution when dogs are meeting/mingling in a small area. Dogs should be trained to walk and sit quietly with their
owners when in public. It does not look good to the public to see large dogs lunging and pulling their owners. We have a special breed, let’s
present our well-trained beautiful dogs in the best light possible.
